Hurricane Katrina is long gone, but the preternatural storm rages on in New Orleans. New species from the Beyond moved into Louisiana after the hurricane destroyed the borders between worlds, and it falls to wizard sentinel Drusilla Jaco and her partner, Alex Warin, to keep the preternaturals peaceful and the humans unaware. But a war is brewing between two clans of Cajun merpeople in Plaquemines Parish, and down in the swamp, DJ learns, there’s more stirring than angry mermen and the threat of a were-gator.
Wizards are dying, and something—or someone—from the Beyond is poisoning the waters of the mighty Mississippi, threatening the humans who live and work along the river. DJ and Alex must figure out what unearthly source is contaminating the water and who—or what—is killing the wizards. Is it a malcontented merman, the naughty nymph, or some other critter altogether? After all, DJ’s undead suitor, the pirate Jean Lafitte, knows his way around a body or two.
It’s anything but smooth sailing on the bayou as the Sentinels of New Orleans series continues.
I was a little surprised when I started reading River Road that it takes place 3 years after Royal Street. A bold move by Johnson in my opinion.
DJ still has her training wheels on when it comes to being the sentinel of New Orleans; the sexy and heavily armed shifter, Alex is still in the picture as DJ’s partner and best friend.
After becoming stronger but magically and physically, DJ in true Urban Fantasy kick ass chick from, gets down and dirty in River Road showing that she can hold her own against the bad guys.
But DJ is far from being alone; along with Alex, the sexy and some what smarmy undead pirate, Jean Lafitte is still around. And after DJ and Jake become friendly again after a long break from their budding, friendship/romance they begin working together.
Any like many UF series there is a slow build up to a romantic relationship between the heroine and a hero. But in DJ’s case she has three guys wanting to be her honey bunny. Two of which are pretty out in open about wanting to make kissy face with her while the third, Alex has been holding back because of their working relationship. DJ is can’t decide which one she wants more. They all have good and bad points.
So River Road has it all; a kick ass heroine that only gets better with each book, a slew of paranormal creatures from shifters to nymphs and mermen and a promise of a romance but like with DJ we don’t know who yet.
Suzanne Johnson knows how to write Urban Fantasy at its finest and I can’t wait for the 3rd book!!!
After 17 years I've finally finished my BA in English (no I do not want to be a teacher). Before majoring in English I would not have touched anything labeled "classic", but I have enjoyed a few along the way in my college career.
While I hated to read growing up, I am now an avid book reader and audiobook listener. I love rejecting reality one book at a time. I only read fiction within my favorite (at least to date) genres which include: most romance (paranormal, contemporary, D/s, BDSM, M/M)Urban Fantasy, and a few YA (mostly PNR or UF from favorite adult authors, but I'm slowly stepping out of my comfort zone after enjoying a few contemporary YA novels in adolescent literature class I took).
