2014 Audio Challenge

You guys asked for it and the Audiobook Challenge back for 2014! Join The Book Nympho and Hot Listens for the 2nd year of great audio books.

Audiobooks are great for those times you want to read but can’t for some reason like driving, doing chores, working out, or if you’re one of the lucky ones like me, listen to them at work.

I know some of you are thinking, audio books? Pass. I thought that once too. But when you find a great narrator they can make the story even better. There are some series I will only listen even if I can get the Arc I’ll wait until the audio is available because the narrator does such a great job bring the book to life.

Reading Challenge Details:

  • Runs January 1, 2014 – December 31, 2014. You can join at anytime.
  • The goal is to find a new love for audios or to outdo yourself by listening to more audios in 2014 than you did in 2013.
  • Books must be in audio format (CD, MP3, etc.)
  • ANY genres count.
  • Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are allowed.
  • You do not have to be a book blogger to participate; you can track your progress on Goodreads, Shelfari, Facebook, LibraryThing, etc.
  • If you’re a blogger grab the button and do a quick post about the challenge to help spread the word. If you’re not a blogger you can help by posting on Facebook or Tweeting about the challenge.

Levels:

  • Newbie (I’ll give it a try) 1-5
  • Weekend Warrior (I’m getting the hang of this) 5-10
  • Stenographer (can listen while multi-tasking) 10-15
  • Socially Awkward (Don’t talk to me) 15-20
  • Binge Listener (Why read when someone can do it for you) 20-30
  • My Precious (I had my earbuds surgically implanted) 30+

I’m a book hoarder that’s trying to break the habit but it’s hard. I can say that I’ve cut back a lot in the last two years. But I still have over 200 books on my shelves and ereaders that I still haven’t read.

My audiobook pile is growing more every day. When I can’t read I’m listening to an audio. Seriously y’all, I’m an audiobook junkie!

I love rejecting reality by reading/listening to all kinds of Romance and Urban Fantasy.

  1. Half way through the challenge and I’ve listened to 31 audiobooks, which puts me on track for the target of 60 but I’m behind on reviews (only 9 when I’d planned 15).

The best new discoveries for me so far were “The Panopticon” by Jenni Fagan, a dark but lyrical and very human book about a teenage girl in care in Scotland, “My Life As A White Trash Zombie” by Diana Rowland, which is witty and stylish but still has an emotional punch and “The Girl On The Stairs” by Louise Welsh, a claustrophobic thrilled about a pregnant Brit in Berlin who may be paranoid or may be in danger- dark ideas with delicious prose.

Don’t know how I missed out on an audiobook challenge….but what better time to sign up than “June is Audiobook Month”. I just pinned all of my audiobooks for the year from GoodReads to a Pinterest board.

  3. Getting a late start on things but I am glad to have found this challenge as I have been devouring audios this year. 🙂

  4. I am gonna sign up my blog, both me and my friend adore Audio books. I am only sorry I am joining this so late. But whoop. This is gonna be fun. Thank you

    • TheBookNympho

LOL. You’re not the only one. For next year I’ll have to have two different list of levels. One for newbies and one for the obsessed. LOL

  5. Nasreen Qamber

Started Jan first. Already at Stenographer! Looking to beat my sister’s record (designmeahuman – Najla Qamber) of 150 books from last year. *excited*

  6. So far this year we have listened to 4 audiobooks and working on the 5th. I have loved audiobooks since I listened to the entire Harry Potter series in preparation for the last book! They make traffic and grocery shopping so much more manageable! I hope I win!

  7. I seemed to spend forever on the road in January so I’m eight books and three reviews into my 60+ books and 30+ review target. The best was “Broken Homes” by Ben Aaronovich – this is a series that just keeps getting better. The strangest was “Some Kind of Fairy Tale” which was compelling and odd, questioning what we know to be true and what we believe to be true. The rest were fun but not stunning: “Ha’Penny” by Jo Walton – not as good as “Farthing” that started the trilogy,”Iron Lake” by William Kent Kurger – book 1 of an old series that’s over-stretches itself, “This Case is Gonna Kill Me” by Philippa Bornikova: a slick chiclit/vampire/lawyer/romance mix that kept me listening, “I’m Dreaming Of An Undead Christmas” by Molly Harper, a freebie Christmas Special in Halfmoon Hollow and a “So Sure of Death” by Dana Stabenow, book two in her Liam Campbell series.

Well, my budget is signing up for Newbie status, but I could probably get up to Weekend Warrior with some rereads or if I find some good deals.

    • TheBookNympho

Don’t forget to check your public library to see if they audio books too. Great way to save money.

  9. Nichole~Bookaholic

I LOVE audio books…so glad I found this challenge I’m in at the “my precious”

  10. Hm. Not sure exactly how to sign up without blogging about it, but I’m going to participate (unofficially?) as a newbie. Currently listening to my first ever audiobook. 🙂

  11. Danielle H

I just signed up. I went for level Stenographer (10-15). I then when to check the number of audiobooks I read last year which was 20. So I’ll keep this level for the moment and see how I do.

  12. I’m in! I’m going for weekend warrior. It’s not much but I only just started listening to audiobooks late last year. Thanks for hosting this!

    • TheBookNympho

      Thanks for signing up.

After looking at my read list for 2013 and 80% of my 145 books were audios I’ve thought about changing the tagline to say Rejecting Reality One AUDIObook at a Time. LOL

    • Mike Finn Audiobook Junkie

In February I read five books “The Wind Up Girl” -one of the best SF books I’ve read in a long while, “The Wretched of Muirwood”, “Nothing Gold Can Stay”- the third Liam Campbell novel, “The Last Policeman” – SF crime with a twist and “Croak” a refreshingly original young adult novel about reapers.

I’ve read 13 of my target of 60 books so far and I’m enjoying myself tremendously. This is so much more fun than real life.

  13. I’m totally going to do MY PRECIOUS. I love audiobooks! My audible account has gotten some serious mileage in the last few years.

  14. I am an audio book junkie! This is a great challenge for me. I am going for top level here! MY PRECIOUS. I have been listening to audio book for my years! My membership will do me good this year!!

  15. I am going to do My Precious. I just started listening to audiobooks again last month and got through 3 1/2. Based on that I should not have a problem doing 30+. Although, I have just started the Outlander series and some of those are between 30-50 hrs a pop! My commute is 45 min but I listen whenever I can :).

  16. Peregrina651

Count me in! I’ve long since had my earbuds surgically implanted. It is the only way I consume books these days.

Best listens ever: *The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency* series narrated by Lisette Lecat and *MacBeth* (a novelization) read by Alan Cumming — two books that are absolutely given a whole new dimension by the narrator.

  17. I love audio books – There is always one set up in my car and one by my treadmill…. Currently listening to THE ROSE GARDEN by Susanna Kearsley.

Favorite series are J. R. Ward – BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD – on book #9
and J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts ) IN DEATH series (just started so a long way to go!)
Also – Christine Feehan GHOSTWALKER series ; and a new fabulous author Mark Greaney and his GREY MAN series – as a note I believe Greaney has sold the first Grey Man book and it will be made into a movie with BRAD PITT as the “Grey Man”…..

    • TheBookNympho

I grabbed books 1-5 in the Death series by J.D. Robb through an audio sale. I hear it’s really good. I’ll start it in the following months.

      • Once I got over the culture shock of it being set way into the future – they were really pretty good! I’m on Number 3 so I have a LONNNNNNG way to go with that series….

Have you listened to GHOSTWALKERS by Christine Feehan??

      • I read a novella for the In Death series titled Midnight in Death by J. D. Robb over the Christmas holiday period and loved it. It was my 1st experience with the In Death series… I’ve since acquired three more books in the series to read.

  18. Kym

I’m going for Stenographer. I’m sure I’ll have no problems. I drive a half hour to and from work every day.

    • TheBookNympho

That’s how long my drive is as well. I listen in the car and at work. I’ll listen at home if I’m close to finishing up a book but I try to save my at home time for actual reading instead of listening.

  19. I’m going to do Binge Listener! I listened to 16 audios this year, but I started in March or April so that level should be a breeze for me next year!

  20. I’m not real big on Audiobooks and I keep saying that I will try them more, but never do. So this is a good way to get myself to. I’m going newbie with a goal of three. Its on my G oodreads comments and I made a shelf.

  21. I’m glad you’re doing this again. I’m going for My Precious and I am determined to do a better job tracking this year!

    • TheBookNympho

I buy the 12 credit at once membership at Audible.com for $150. That sounds like a lot but when you break it down by audio it’s $12.50 per audio which is cheaper than the $14.95 a month for 1 credit which would be $180 if you did it for 12 months. Then I get more audios through out the year during their sales, which they have a lot of sales.

I also watch for sales on Tantor.com. And I’ve started requesting audios for review which helps my budget.

I use my library as much as possible as well. Much like paper/ebooks I don’t have to own every book I read so I don’t mind checking them out at the library.

  22. […]   The new year is almost here and of course you know what that means…more reading challenges! I must admit I signed up for this challenge last year and failed miserably, but I’m determined to kick it’s ass in 2014! The 2014 Audio Book Challenge is hosted by two awesome ladies, The Book Nympho and Hot Listens. I always thought audio books were not for me until these ladies and some other friends convinced me to give them a try. They help ease long commutes, slow days at work or make boring chores a little more entertaining. Find more information on this challenge below and sign up HERE. […]

  23. Totally joining this year, since I didnt last year, but I know I read a bunch of em. Going for My precious. Probably going to blow that out of the park the way I’ve been carrying on…

  24. Ning

I’m so gna try this challenge, but I’m gna go for weekend warrior! I just finished an audiobook I loved, Hounded by Kevin Hearne, so I think I’d definitely enjoy more audiobooks!!

  25. Lol having my earbuds surgically implanted is just gross. Not going to happen! but…. what the hell, I may decide to join in this challenge. I like the snow 🙂

  26. Liz
