Anthony Rawlings had a plan—to teach Claire Nichols to behave.

Claire Nichols had a plan—to survive!

In an unfamiliar bedroom within a luxurious mansion, Claire Nichols wakes to memories of a brutal abduction. All of her recollections have one common denominator, the man she just met—Anthony Rawlings. Unbeknownst to Claire, Anthony has had her in his sights for a long time. Every action has consequences—and his actions resulted in their chance meeting.

Facing incomprehensible circumstances, Claire must learn to survive as she comes to terms with her new reality—every aspect of her livelihood is now dependent upon the tall, dark-haired, dark-eyed tycoon. Anthony may appear to the world as a prosperous, benevolent, kind businessman, but in reality Claire learns he is also a menacing, controlling captor with very strict rules: do as your told, public failure is not an option, and don’t divulge private information. Failure to follow these rules and more, are met with serious consequences.

In an effort to earn her freedom, Claire learns her lessons well and before long, she unknowingly captivates her captor. Anthony/ Tony reluctantly becomes enthralled with Claire’s beauty, resilience and determination. Their interaction instigates strong emotions, including—fear, anger, love, and lust—as their journey flows into uncharted waters of intrigue and passion.

From the opening criminal abduction, through the twists and turns, to the unlikely romantic thrills, the suspense climaxes as Aleatha Romig utilizes vivid detail, allowing this novel to unfold like a movie.

Can you put the pieces of the puzzle together? Claire Nichols abduction wasn’t a random act—did she learn her lessons well enough? Will these unlikely lovers remain true--or will she learn the truth before it’s too late?

The set up
Claire Nichols wakes and finds herself a prisoner in a mansion. She doesn’t remember how she got there but does recall the man who is keeping her captive. According to Tony Rawlings, Claire signed an agreement that allows him to hold her and have his will with her until she’s repaid her debt to him.

The issues
There’s so much more to these circumstances and we slowly see layers peeled back from Tony to reveal a complex, often cruel man. We see glimpses of his past that are sometimes unclear and disturbing. We also watch Claire transform into an insecure, puzzling woman who becomes almost completely dependent on Tony, even though we sometimes see glimpses of someone else.

What was fascinating about this story
Having no idea where this story would lead, I struggled with a range of emotions. There were times I was rooting for Claire, hoping she’d escape the emotional prison Tony created for her. Then there were those times when I just wanted to throttle her. My feelings about Tony were pretty consistent, however. I disliked him intensely for most of the story, which intensified by the end of the book to where I completely despised him. I can’t remember a time when I was this emotionally strung out by a story. Its unpredictability is its strength and I was always off balance, having no ability to anticipate what would be next for Claire or Tony. The ending knocked me off my seat and I couldn’t have been more surprised.

Warnings
There are really disturbing events that occur as part of the story. The scenes are not graphically portrayed but you know the things that happened, such as physical and emotional abuse. And, there’s no way you can finish this book and not want to immediately read the next one. There’s a cliffhanger ending so be prepared.

The bottom line
This is an incredible and disturbing story of intrigue, deception and manipulation. It doesn’t end with this first book as the trilogy is one story arc. I offer no details since this is only one third of the story, which I haven’t been able to let go of and don’t think I ever will, no matter the future outcome. I’m glad I read it and am anxious to move to the next book.

I LOVE reading and am just crazy about so many series and writers. I’m open to exploring new authors and genres and appreciate those who not only write well but can deliciously craft a character and a tale. Your suggestions for new authors and titles are very much welcomed.

I also love to talk about books. There’s nothing more exciting than to finish a great story and cover it A to Z with other people, exploring different perspectives and points of view. So, if you see something on my shelf you’d like to talk about, send me a message and we’ll talk!

  1. I have read all 3 books and will say it has a satisfying ending. BUT…I did struggle through each book. I thought there was a lot of fluff in them. Some moments were great while others I found boring and just annoying. I’m glad that I did push through my annoyance and continued. I love to hate Tony. LOL

  2. Haven’t read this one yet. I have it, and keep hearing it is a good read, though. Right now I’m reading Torn From You by Nashoda Rose. It is really hard to read, and pretty graphic, but so far really good. Thanks for the review!
