Former Marine sniper Seth Harlan is determined to prove that he can still do his job despite his ongoing battle with PTSD. When an old friend contacts HORNET to rescue a black ops soldier, Seth's stability is strained. He knows all too well what it's like to rot inside an enemy camp, praying for rescue and waiting for death. And he's not about to leave a man behind.

Photojournalist Phoebe Leighton just stumbled into the middle of an arms deal. Teaming up with a ragtag team of mercenaries is the last thing she wants to do--especially when she realizes Seth Harlan is assigned to the mission. He may ignite a passion in her she thought long dead, but Phoebe's hiding a secret that could destroy him.

With a bomb in the mix, HORNET's mission is suddenly about a lot more than an abandoned soldier. Racing against the clock, Seth, Phoebe, and the rest of the team struggle to stop a ruthless warlord bent on power, revenge...and death.

Quick summary
Marine sniper Seth Harlan was a POW in Afghanistan for many months before he was rescued, almost near death after being severely tortured. No longer suitable for military duty, HORNET is his only chance to continue doing what he was trained to do but he’s hanging on by a thread. His teammates don’t trust his readiness but he’s determined to somehow persevere. Photojournalist Phoebe Leighton is on assignment in Afghanistan doing a documentary on the plight of young girls in the country when she stumbles upon an arms deal. When HORNET arrives with Seth on the team to rescue a black ops soldier, Phoebe’s drawn to the man with whom she’s got a special but secret connection.

The suspense
Seth is dealing not only with the rigor of the operation to rescue the soldier, but also his flashbacks and his team’s lack of confidence in him. The situation is treacherous and even Seth isn’t sure if he can do his job. The target is evil and Phoebe is also at risk for her role in bringing attention to the arms deal and her documentary subject. The tension is enormous, especially as it’s almost impossible to gauge who’s friend or foe.

The romance
While the suspense was compelling the relationship between Phoebe and Seth was just magical. It wasn’t just about lust and physical attraction. She was Seth’s lifeline as he found in her someone that knew what he needed to regain his sense of self and honestly deal with what happened while he was imprisoned. It’s one of the highlights of the story, even though Phoebe was harboring a serious secret.

The bottom line
I initially thought this was definitely more pitched to the suspense side of things until I realized how integral the romance was to the heart of the operation. Burrows does a brilliant job of weaving the threads of both into an outstanding story. Loved the first book and it’s now two for two. The supporting characters are lushly designed, so much so that I’m attracted to all of them. I hope this is at least a 10-book series because I want more of all of them. Seth’s story certainly far exceeded my expectations and they were pretty high.

About Tonya Burrows

Writing has always been my one true love. I knew since I was 6 years old that I wanted to be an author, but didn’t finish my first novel until 8th grade. It was an epic sci-fi/fantasy/mystery/romance mash-up and writing The End was one of the proudest moments of my young life.

I haven’t put down my pen since.

In college, after several false starts in more practical fields of study, I followed my heart and receive a B.A. in creative writing from SUNY Oswego. Now I’m working on a M.F.A. in popular fiction at Seton Hill University.

I spend most of my time writing, tinkering with my website, or reading. I love TV and movies and probably–okay, definitely–watch too much of both. Give me a good horror movie over a chick flick any day. (And, let’s be honest, I’ll take a bad horror movie too!) And if superheroes are involved, I’m so all over that. I’m a proud geek at heart and pledge my avid TV fandom to Supernatural and Doctor Who. I’m also a big fan of The Voice. What can I say? Guilty pleasure.

I share my life with my fur-babies: two dogs, Ella and Otto, and a ginormous cat named Nabisco. (Yes, like the cookie company. What? I told you I like my sweets, didn’t I? No? Well, now you know. Hi, I’m Tonya and I’m a junk food junkie.)

I’m from a small town in Western New York, but I love to travel. Some might even say I suffer from a bad case of wanderlust. I say I don’t suffer at all–I enjoy every second and I have a habit of moving someplace new every few years just to shake things up. Luckily, my animals are all excellent travel buddies.

I LOVE reading and am just crazy about so many series and writers. I’m open to exploring new authors and genres and appreciate those who not only write well but can deliciously craft a character and a tale. Your suggestions for new authors and titles are very much welcomed.

I also love to talk about books. There’s nothing more exciting than to finish a great story and cover it A to Z with other people, exploring different perspectives and points of view. So, if you see something on my shelf you’d like to talk about, send me a message and we’ll talk!
