Top Five Reasons Why Sex Scenes Trump Fight Scenes
Thanks, Jennifer for having me as a guest today!
Sure, fight scenes can keep you on the edge of your seat, but nothing gets your heart pumping like a good sex scene. I’m talking about the kind of on-the-page lovin’ that causes your body to go rigid, your breath to catch, and your fingers to curl around the edges of your book or e-reader in a white-knuckled grip. A book with sex scenes that leaves you feeling as satisfied as the hero and heroine is a book worth reading if you ask me! Smexy times FTW! So here are my top 5 reasons why sex scenes trump fight scenes.
5. Living Vicariously
The best sex scenes are like a dream you don’t want to wake up from. There’s no awkwardness, no embarrassment, no body issues. No one bumps heads or faces, the only sounds in the room are the hero and heroine moaning and groaning, their breaths becoming one. Through a smokin’ hot sex scene you can relive your first time. Your best time. The time that you’d daydreamed about even though it never happened. No one wants to relive a fight. No one daydreams about taking a right hook to the face. No one shudders post fight and says on a breath, “Let’s do that again.” Which takes us to number four…
4. Reading romance has been proven to improve a person’s sex life.
How can you argue with science? Okay, so I’m no scientific authority, but there are tons of studies out there that have shown that reading a steamy romance can boost a couple’s sex life. The mental stimulation from reading a sex scene that’s burning up the pages can translate into real-life sexual satisfaction. Can you get that from reading a good fight scene? I don’t think so.
I’m talking about the sort of mindless, animalistic urge to tear someone’s clothes off and go at it like a starving man devours a steak. It doesn’t matter where you are, what you’re doing…or even who might be watching. If you don’t get naked and down to business, like now, you’re going to lose your freaking mind. Sure, fight scenes can have that sort of mindless passion too, but you’re not going to walk away from it with a warm, full-body glow and the urge to go at it all over again.
Is there anything better than a toe-curling kiss? The kind that leaves your mouth swollen and hot, your lips throbbing, and your head spinning. Kissing does a crazy amount of things to the body. Endorphins, oxytocin, and dopamine are released into the brain and body. Your pupils dilate. Your body’s intake of oxygen increases. The heart rate jacks up and a sense of euphoria washes over you. A kiss fires a crazy amount of nerve endings in the body. Sounds a hell of a lot more appealing than the paltry adrenaline rush you get from throwing a punch, right?
One of the great things about romance is the way it makes us feel. Powerful sex scenes can be a punch to the gut. But not as brutish as something you’d get from a fight scene. A well-written romance doubles you over in a pleasant, boneless way that you feel from head to toe. It makes your chest ache. And instead of leaving bruises and broken bones in its wake, you only want more. A great romance leaves a permanent mark. One you never forget. Who doesn’t want to read a story that allows you to fall in love over and over again.
Need I say more?
What author doubles you over with their sex scenes? Who writes gut-punching emotion that leaves your chest aching as your heart tries to claw its way out of your chest?

I coexist with my husband of 15 years, our 11-year-old son and two chilled cats in the Deep South.
After 17 years I've finally finished my BA in English (no I do not want to be a teacher). Before majoring in English I would not have touched anything labeled "classic", but I have enjoyed a few along the way in my college career.
While I hated to read growing up, I am now an avid book reader and audiobook listener. I love rejecting reality one book at a time. I only read fiction within my favorite (at least to date) genres which include: most romance (paranormal, contemporary, D/s, BDSM, M/M)Urban Fantasy, and a few YA (mostly PNR or UF from favorite adult authors, but I'm slowly stepping out of my comfort zone after enjoying a few contemporary YA novels in adolescent literature class I took).
