All Major Patrick MacLean wanted was Christmas with the woman and child who were his family in everything but name. But Captain Samantha Egan has come back from the war a different woman than the one who left - and she doesn't know if she can love him anymore.

But neither of them counted on the determination of a little girl they both call daughter and if Natalie has her wish, her parents may have no idea what's coming for them. It's going to take Christmas miracle to bring these two wounded warriors back from the edge of a broken heart.

This story has been featured in Home For Christmas: A Holiday Duet with JoAnn Ross.

Every time I think I understand the impact of multiple deployments on our military families, Jessica Scott presents me with something more.

Captain Samantha (Sam) Egan returned from her recent deployment changed. Her way of coping with her war experience is to box all of her feelings up until she’s so numb she can’t feel anything anymore but her difference. Now Sam’s convinced she needs to leave Major Patrick MacLean, the man she’s been with for nine years and who’s the only father her daughter, Natalie, has ever known.

You can’t help but empathize with both Sam and Patrick, who’s had two deployments of his own. It was also eye-opening to see how differently both handled similar issues though neither looked to each other to cope until Sam left. Their way back to each other, initiated by little Natalie, was honest and raw at times. Patrick is pretty special and I loved how he gave Sam exactly what she needed, when she needed it, to find her way home.

This story highlights the true spirit of the season. Coming home has a much deeper, richer meaning.

About Jessica Scott

Jessica Scott is a career army officer, mother of two daughters, three cats and three dogs, wife to a career NCO and wrangler of all things stuffed and fluffy. She is a terrible cook and even worse housekeeper, but she’s a pretty good shot with her assigned weapon and someone liked some of the stuff she wrote. Somehow, her children are pretty well adjusted and her husband still loves her, despite burned water and a messy house.

She’s written for the New York Times At War Blog, PBS Point of View Regarding War, and IAVA. She deployed to Iraq in 2009 as part of OIF/New Dawn and is currently a company commander stationed at Fort Hood.

Most recently, she’s been featured as one of Esquire Magazine’s Americans of the Year for 2012.

I LOVE reading and am just crazy about so many series and writers. I’m open to exploring new authors and genres and appreciate those who not only write well but can deliciously craft a character and a tale. Your suggestions for new authors and titles are very much welcomed.

I also love to talk about books. There’s nothing more exciting than to finish a great story and cover it A to Z with other people, exploring different perspectives and points of view. So, if you see something on my shelf you’d like to talk about, send me a message and we’ll talk!
