John Charming isn't your average prince...

He comes from a line of Charmings--an illustrious family of dragon slayers, witch-finders and killers dating back to before the fall of Rome. Trained by a modern day version of the Knights Templar, monster hunters who have updated their methods from chain mail and crossbows to Kevlar and shotguns, John Charming was one of the best--until a curse made him one of the abominations the Knights were sworn to hunt.

That was a lifetime ago. Now John tends bar under an assumed name in rural Virginia and leads a peaceful, quiet life. That is, until a vampire and a blonde walked into his bar...

AUDIOBOOK snarky urban 2014

First Impression:

YES! Just when I was drowning in romances and needed a great urban fantasy listen, CHARMING came into my life.

CHARMING has a full cast of supernaturals from werewolves, vamps, Valkyrie and more.

I’ve not read many books told from a male protagonist POV’s and I must say I’m really enjoying them. They are great for when I’m burn out on romances. I love the fact that CHARMING is written in first person so when Roger Wayne narrates John Charming’s story it’s like he is talking to me when I’m listening.

I told someone who I thought John Charming is like a cooler Atticus from Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid Chronicles. I’d love to see these two guys hang out sometime.

Roger Wayne came out of no where for me. I was hooked on his narration of CHARMING within 20 minutes of listening. He has made it to my list of favorite narrators and I don’t have many male narrators on that list. He did an outstanding job with everything.

Lasting Impression:

I was about 40% into CHARMING when I purchased book 2, DARING on audio. Bring on more Elliott James and Roger Wayne!

If you’re a fan of author Kevin Hearne you’ll enjoy Elliott James as well.

Fan of Luke Daniels’ narration you also enjoy Roger Wayne.

Thank You:

Thanks to Carmel from Rabid Reads for the recommendation & KindleJo Jo for gifting the audio book to me.

Something is rotten in the state of Wisconsin. Werewolf packs are being united and absorbed into an army of super soldiers by a mysterious figure who speaks like an angel and fights like a demon. And every Knight Templar--keepers of the magical peace between mankind and magickind--who tries to get close to this big bad wolf winds up dead. No knight can infiltrate a group whose members can smell a human from a mile away . . . no knight except one.

John Charming. Ex knight. Current werewolf. Hunted by the men who trained him, he now might be their only salvation. But animal instincts are rising up to claim John more powerfully than ever before, and he must decide if this new leader of wolves is a madman . . . or a messiah.

The team of Elliott James and Roger Wayne was not a one hit wonder with me. I enjoyed DARING almost as much as CHARMING. There was only a 1/2 star difference in the ratings between the two books. Why? DARING was a little slow in a couple of places and that’s really the only reason for the lower rating.I can’t wait for book 3, FEARLESS to release August 11, 2015.

But in the mean time I’ll read more about John Charming in the short stories that take place before CHARMING.

About Elliott James

An army brat and gypsy scholar, ELLIOTT JAMES is currently living in the blueridge mountains of southwest Virginia. An avid reader since the age of three (or that’s what his family swears anyhow), he has an abiding interest in mythology, martial arts, live music, hiking, and used bookstores. Irrationally convinced that cellphone technology was inserted into human culture by aliens who want to turn us into easily tracked herd beasts, Elliott has one anyhow but keeps it in a locked tinfoil covered box which he will sometimes sit and stare at mistrustfully for hours. Okay, that was a lie. Elliott lies a lot; in fact, he decided to become a writer so that he could get paid for it.

I coexist with my husband of 15 years, our 11-year-old son and two chilled cats in the Deep South.

After 17 years I've finally finished my BA in English (no I do not want to be a teacher). Before majoring in English I would not have touched anything labeled "classic", but I have enjoyed a few along the way in my college career.

While I hated to read growing up, I am now an avid book reader and audiobook listener. I love rejecting reality one book at a time. I only read fiction within my favorite (at least to date) genres which include: most romance (paranormal, contemporary, D/s, BDSM, M/M)Urban Fantasy, and a few YA (mostly PNR or UF from favorite adult authors, but I'm slowly stepping out of my comfort zone after enjoying a few contemporary YA novels in adolescent literature class I took).

  1. I put these om my TBR a while back, but I think adding them to my audio TBR will be a better place for it. I can’t wait to get to know Charming…especially if he’s cooler than Atticus!

  2. I saw your reviews go up last night on Audible, and wasn’t sure if you were planning on posting ’em on the blog. I’m psyched that this author / narrator combo was a hit for you too! John Charming really is like a cooler Atticus; I couldn’t have said it better myself. That’ll teach you to ignore my recommendations and go with the crowd instead! 😉
