She baited a cop and hooked a killer.

She crosses the line…

Sonya Savonski has something to prove as the only female drift boat captain fishing the deadly depths of the Bering Sea. She stirs the waters, luring a murderer to the surface, and gets the unwanted attention of an Alaska State Trooper.

He tows the line…

"Fish cops" don’t mix with fisherman, but if Alaska State Trooper Garrett Hunt can reel Sonya in - before a killer uses her for bait - she could be the catch of his life.

Quick Summary

Sonya Savonski isn’t afraid of taking risks and she’s taking some big ones during this year’s fishing season in South Naknek, Alaska. Not only is she going to continue with the family’s tradition of set netting, she’s also going to captain a drift boat and fish out in the open sea. This is her first year heading the family’s commercial fishing business, taking the reins from her grandfather. Her decision to use both fishing options is controversial enough but she’s also the only woman leading a drift boat crew.

The issues

Alaska State Trooper Garrett Hunt decides to join the Alaska Wildlife Troopers during the season as a chance to get out of town after he lost his opportunity to pursue a relationship with “friend with benefits” Mel Bennett (see my review of Edge). He meets Sonya as soon as he lands and it’s an immediate attraction…that’s before she learns he’s a “fish cop.” By then, it’s too late as they’re both hooked. Things get dicey when Sonya becomes a target and is the victim of numerous incidents of sabotage, some life threatening.

What I enjoyed

As with the previous story, I learned quite a bit about the rudiments and perils of commercial fishing in the Bering Sea as well as the realities of life in this Alaska region. It’s fascinating and when you overlay this backdrop with an eclectic cast of characters and exciting action, I was hooked. I had a clue as to who was behind the sabotage but there was a surprise twist that I didn’t foresee. And, Sonya has an ex-boyfriend on the scene who wanted to remove the “X.” I had a love-hate thing going with Adrian throughout the story. But Sonya and Garrett’s romance was always the main focus and theirs was a fiery relationship.

The narration

I enjoyed Mia’s narration much more this time as she better handled the suspenseful aspects of the story. She also did a great job distinguishing the characters, adding a unique flair to some of them. Her pacing was perfect.

The bottom line

I really liked the story, setting, action and romance. The balance between the suspense and romance seemed perfect and I never felt either was diminished by the other. The Alaska element continues to be a huge draw for me as this is new territory (pardon the pun) and the fact that I now know the difference between set netting and drift fishing feels good, too. It was exciting and I liked Sonya and Garrett’s romance. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

About Tiffinie Helmer

Raised in Alaska, I spent many long, dark winters as a teenager escaping the forty below temperatures by penning romantic adventures. I attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks where I met a man who swept me off my mukluks and promptly married him. The 90’s were spent playing mommy to four children, and on the glorious day my youngest entered kindergarten, I set up camp at the keyboard.

I write mystery/suspense (just can’t keep the bad guys out) and contemporary romance (for when I need to lighten things up). Part of my year is spent landlocked in Utah and the other part commercial fishing on Alaska’s Bering Sea (read HOOKED). During my landlock months, I create wheel-thrown pottery (read SHIVER), moonlight for Barnes & Noble, and race around with my top down on my convertible (read TOPLESS).

Some of my favorite things are muscle cars, sun worshiping, kayaking, fishing, and Green Tea Frappuccinos!

I LOVE reading and am just crazy about so many series and writers. I’m open to exploring new authors and genres and appreciate those who not only write well but can deliciously craft a character and a tale. Your suggestions for new authors and titles are very much welcomed.

I also love to talk about books. There’s nothing more exciting than to finish a great story and cover it A to Z with other people, exploring different perspectives and points of view. So, if you see something on my shelf you’d like to talk about, send me a message and we’ll talk!

It could be me getting used to her style though her pitch was noticeably different during the tense moments. I don’t remember her doing that with the first book. You’re probably right, Loupe, about it maybe being a little bit of both.

Lol! I loved the first book’s cover. This one reminds me of that classic movie, From Here to Eternity, all about the romance:)
