Gideon calls me his angel, but he's the miracle in my life. My gorgeous, wounded warrior, so determined to slay my demons while refusing to face his own.
The vows we'd exchanged should have bound us tighter than blood and flesh. Instead they opened old wounds, exposed pain and insecurities, and lured bitter enemies out of the shadows. I felt him slipping from my grasp, my greatest fears becoming my reality, my love tested in ways I wasn't sure I was strong enough to bear.
At the brightest time in our lives, the darkness of his past encroached and threatened everything we'd worked so hard for. We faced a terrible choice: the familiar safety of the lives we'd had before each other or the fight for a future that suddenly seemed an impossible and hopeless dream...
This story doesn’t have anything really extraordinary happening but does focus on Eva and Gideon’s developing relationship. As their relationship started and went from zero to sixty in record speed, this was the opportunity for them to step back and really get to know each other in ways that really matter.
The true highlight is being given Gideon’s point of view instead of getting him through Eva’s lens. I’ve never really been certain of his feelings about Eva (an obsession, crutch, etc.) and others and it was extremely helpful to have them clarified. Some were unexpected. The insights into his character were extremely interesting and helpful.
I also enjoyed the dual narrators, especially Jeremy York’s version of Gideon. He seemed to capture his essence.
It wouldn’t be Gideon and Eva if there weren’t “angst-y” moments and there are those. There are also some revelations that raise even more questions about Gideon’s past and some business intrigue. I wasn’t certain if this book was necessary but by the end, I felt more engaged with them individually and as a couple so from that perspective, it matters. I enjoyed it and am looking forward to their final chapter.
Listen to a clip!
I also love to talk about books. There’s nothing more exciting than to finish a great story and cover it A to Z with other people, exploring different perspectives and points of view. So, if you see something on my shelf you’d like to talk about, send me a message and we’ll talk!
