Can’t Get Enough of…Series Binge Reading!

Binge Reading

Can’t Get Enough of . . .  is a new monthly feature here at The Book Nympho where we give you lists of books that are similar either by topic, genre, character types, etc. You can find new posts mid-month on Friday.

One of my reading goals this year is to catch up on many of my neglected series. My preferred method of reading is to binge through a series from start to finish. It’s what I used to do when I joined Shelfari and Goodreads almost five years ago and loved it.

During the last couple of years, I’ve strayed from my binge reading pattern, mostly due to NetGalley or author request commitments. While I enjoyed expanding my horizons, I really missed the pleasure I got from reading a series one after the other until I was done.

Unlike binge eating, I have zero guilt when I’m finished. I don’t feel bloated and sick, rather the opposite! That feeling of satisfaction I get from catching up is hard to describe. And, while I’m in the middle of a series binge where there’s a strong sense of setting and place, I feel like I’m transported to that town and the characters are my neighbors. When I’ve read that last sentence, there’s a bit of sadness but also satisfaction that my friends are in a good place (it’s rare for an author to leave you any other way!).

Here are some of the series I’ve binge read to date.

Southern Comfort by Lisa Clark O’Neill
It was wonderful! I’m now up to date and will read the new books as soon as they’re released. The characters are quite appealing and the stories are outstanding.

Deception NemesisObsession

Fatal by Marie Force
This series is ideal for binge reading. The story timelines between books are short (typically 3-6 months) and though there aren’t any cliffhangers, there’s a strong cast of secondary characters with story continuity. The next book will release in September and it’s already on my reading plan.

Last Chance Rescue by Christy Reece
I’m just wrapping up this binge (one more book to go) and, fortunately, there’s a spinoff series. I love the concept, characters and high tension so I don’t really have to say goodbye and will be up to date with the new one.

Sweet JusticeSweet RevengeSweet Reward

Sons of Sin by Anna Campbell
It was only three books but the character connections made this a must to read back to back. It’s a really good historical romance series.

A Rake's Midnight KissWhat the Duke DaresA Scoundrel by Moonlight

When You’re Gone by Taryn Elliott
This trilogy has one story arc and it is best read back to back. There’s a cliffhanger after book two (and it’s a humdinger) so be ready. I loved everything about the series.

Anything But MineBulletproof WeeksEdge of Forever

The Barefoot Bay Brides Trilogy by Roxanne St. Claire
I was in contemporary romance heaven with this series and hated to see it end.

Barefoot in WhiteBarefoot in LaceBarefootInPearls

Delta Detectives by Stacy Green
There are four books in this series and I read them as soon as they were released, two back to back. I love this author’s writing and will read everything she releases.

I LOVE reading and am just crazy about so many series and writers. I’m open to exploring new authors and genres and appreciate those who not only write well but can deliciously craft a character and a tale. Your suggestions for new authors and titles are very much welcomed.

I also love to talk about books. There’s nothing more exciting than to finish a great story and cover it A to Z with other people, exploring different perspectives and points of view. So, if you see something on my shelf you’d like to talk about, send me a message and we’ll talk!

  1. Love binge reading! It keeps the details fresh in my mind. Although I can’t read too many in a row as I need to mix genres after a bit.

  2. I normally don’t binge read the way I now watch series on TV, but I just did all 5 Audiobooks on the Lizzy Gardner series by T. R. Ragan. I think that with my new found love for straight thrillers I’ll be doing that a lot…I have a lot to catch up with 🙂
    Great post Jonetta!

I think that qualifies as a binge, Loupe:) There are a few thriller series out there (Karen Rose, Christy Reece, Marie Force, etc.) that are great to binge. Oh! There’s one by Val Kilmer that is a REAL thriller I think you’d enjoy.

Lol! I know what you mean. I stumbled on a book in one of my recent binges that had a tiresome romance trope. It really slowed me down and I needed to read a book from a different series to clear my head.

  3. I start out binge reading a series and then I need a break if it’s a longer series or like Carolyn said, review commitments. But still I’m reading more from my TBR than taking on review requests I plan on binge reading more series. Especially since I have so many on my shelf and ereaders that are shorter series that are completed so I can read them and be done. No waiting for new releases.

  4. When I finally discovered Nalini Singh, there were already several books out. I binge read through those puppies in about 2 weeks loving every minute of her Psy/Changeling series.

And it was oh so fun, wasn’t it? I’m making my way through the Guild Hunter series but way too slowly.

  5. Yes!!! I used to do this too but stopped because of either review commitments or seduced by new books. Now I find myself going months or even years before catching up with a series, and the longer it gets the harder it is to go back because I worry I’ve forgotten the story and would have to start all over again! And when you’re already on book 10 of a 24 books series, that’s pretty daunting. But I think I’m going to use the rest of 2015 playing catch up, and it is such a great feeling binging on series. I can totally relate. Loved this post. It has inspired me to finish of all the series I have on the go! 🙂

Yay! Your story is almost identical to mine. I finally put my foot down and dedicated this year to my series. It works, Carolyn, and I hope you give it a shot.

  6. I love coming into a series late and not having to wait for the next book. Right now, I’m going through The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, Jane Jameson by Molly Harper and Pride by Shelly Laurenson. I’m not doing any of these back to back, but usually about one book per month for each search. With Rebecca Zanetti’s Dark Protectors series now available on audio (with Karen White as the narrator, SCORE!), I’ll be binging that one next.

Oh, I’m trying to resume and continue The Dresden Files now that I’ve collected the audiobooks. Can’t wait to read your reviews of the Dark Protectors series.

I’m now thinking my “one a month” reads of a series feel somewhat like binging. It has almost the same effect on my brain:)

  7. I am using audiobooks for my binge “reading” to catch up on missed or partially read series. Earlier this year, I finished the Kowalski Family series by Shannon Stacey (9 books), and I’m currently doing the Night Huntress/Night Prince series by J. Frost.

I like binge reading, but sometimes, when a series stretches out over more than 5 books, a break is needed. I recently was getting really frustrated with the Night Huntress world, and took a break after the 4th book. Coming back to the series after several months away made it better for me.

I love doing binges via audiobooks! Loved the Kowalski series, which would have been great to read back to back. I’m currently reading the last Night Huntress book after having binge read the series a couple of years ago. It’s ideal for a binge read.

Believe it or not, the first series I binge read was In Death with a whopping 35 books at the time I finished. I don’t think I could do most lengthy series this way but this one worked for me.

  8. I love to binge read. I just can’t always manage it timewise right now. I binge read The Hollows by Kim Harrison last summer, ending with The Witch with No Name. This spring I binge read the Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter and in time for Dark Heir. I originally binge read the Sookie Stackhouse series, the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, the Mercy Thonpson series by Patricia Briggs, the Riley Jensen series by Keri Arthur, the In Death series by JD Robb, oh and all the Nero Wolf books by Rex Stout. And everything by Iris Johanson, and Patrica Cornwell Daniels and Kathy Reich. Yeah I could go on and on. My current wish to sit and binge read would be the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher (I’m audiobooking Book 3 Grave Peril right now) and the Rylee Adamson series by Shannon Mayer (I’ve only managed book 1 so far). Of course, there are others, including the Fatal series by Marie Force I’d like to start and I’m slowly working on the romantic suspense books by Karen Rose (I just got book 6 from the library).

You’ve binged a lot of UF series! I wish I had when I started many on my list because it’s hard to go back later and remember the world building.

Good luck with the rest on your list.
