Marry Me

Cara Paulsen does not give up easily. A scientist and a single mother, she's used to fighting for what she wants, keeping a cool head, and doing whatever it takes to protect her daughter Janie. But "whatever it takes" has never before included a shotgun wedding to a dangerous-looking stranger with an attitude problem....

Or Else.

Sure, the mysterious Talen says that he's there to protect Cara and Janie. He also says that he's a 300-year-old vampire. Of course, the way he touches her, Cara might actually believe he's had that long to practice....

Fans of Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breeds series will enjoy the vampire mythology in Fated by Rebecca Zanetti.

The vampires are all born not made and they’re all male. They need female humans to mate with. Instead of the women having a Breed Mate mark, the vampires get a mark on them once they’ve touched their fated female and once the couple mates the woman is also marked. Once the mating takes place no other vampire male can touch the woman without displeasure.

Also like the Breed Mates in Adrian’s series, the women have special abilities. Cara is an empath with a young daughter, Janie that is psychic. And there’s two groups of vampires. The good ones like Talen and the bad ones, Kurjans. The Kurjans can’t stand sunlight unlike the good vampires. The two vampires side have had a peace of sorts until now. War is breaking out and Cara and other humans will be caught in the middle.

Like many paranormal romances there was an instant-a-love element. I would have liked it if Talen and Cara had a few chapters to get to know each other before they were pushed into a mating. But with Fated being the first book in the Dark Protector series I’ll let it go since many couples in the first book are thrown together fast in order to build the world.

I like the fact that this world has more than just vampires. We met some shifters and there’s mention of fae and other supernatural beings. Even though I wasn’t blown over by Talen and Cara’s romance I see promise with the Dark Protectors series and I will give the second book, Claimed a go.

I’ve listened to the team of Rebecca Zanetti and Karen White with Zanetti’s Sin Brothers series. So I knew I would enjoy listening to White perform Fated. Karen delivers an enjoyable presentation with a full cast. I really enjoy Karen’s voice for the children, she really brought sassy Janie to life while still pulling off Talen and other male characters.

Final Verdict:

I feel like Fated fell prey to first book syndrome. Romance was too fast in order to introduce the world building. But I was intrigued enough to give Claimed (book 2) a go.

About Rebecca Zanetti

New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti has worked as an art curator, Senate aide, lawyer, college professor, and a hearing examiner – only to culminate it all in stories about Alpha males and the women who claim them. She is a member of RWA, has won awards for her works throughout the industry, and has a journalism degree with a poly sci emphasis from Pepperdine University as well as a Juris Doctorate from the University of Idaho.

Growing up amid the glorious backdrops and winter wonderlands of the Pacific Northwest has given Rebecca fantastic scenery and adventures to weave into her stories. She resides in the wild north with her husband, children, and extended family who inspire her every day-or at the very least give her plenty of characters to write about.

I coexist with my husband of 15 years, our 11-year-old son and two chilled cats in the Deep South.

After 17 years I've finally finished my BA in English (no I do not want to be a teacher). Before majoring in English I would not have touched anything labeled "classic", but I have enjoyed a few along the way in my college career.

While I hated to read growing up, I am now an avid book reader and audiobook listener. I love rejecting reality one book at a time. I only read fiction within my favorite (at least to date) genres which include: most romance (paranormal, contemporary, D/s, BDSM, M/M)Urban Fantasy, and a few YA (mostly PNR or UF from favorite adult authors, but I'm slowly stepping out of my comfort zone after enjoying a few contemporary YA novels in adolescent literature class I took).

  1. I just did this one on audio too. I felt pretty much the same way. I liked the ideas, but felt that the series has more potential. I’m really glad that Audible kept this author and narrator paired together.

  2. Is this the main series with the biker spin off? I got the first book of Sim Brothers as per your rec, I’m wry to try this though because I didn’t like Wicked Ride and I am tired of insta love paranormal or not

  3. Jonetta (Ejaygirl)

I’ve had this book forever. Thanks for sharing the world building and the comparison to Midnight Breed. I don’t mind the quickie romances in PNR so I think I’ll put this on my schedule.
