Washington, D.C., Metro Police Detective Sergeant Sam Holland needs a big win to salvage her career--and her confidence--after a disastrous investigation. The perfect opportunity arises when Senator John O'Connor is found brutally murdered in his bed, and Sam is assigned to the case. Matters get complicated when Sam has to team up with Nick Cappuano, O'Connor's friend and chief of staff...and the man Sam had a memorable one-night stand with years earlier. Their sexual chemistry still sizzles, and Sam has to fight to stay focused on the case. Sleeping with a material witness is another mistake she can't afford--especially when the bodies keep piling up.

The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to pick a book which was free (at some point).

Currently, it is $ 2.99 on Amazon, Nook, and Kobo.

I’ve become a big fan of Marie Force in her recent Green Mountain series  so I decided to try this series since I had the first book in the Fatal series as a freebie on my Kindle.  This is sort of romantic suspense. Sort of.

Fatal Affair is a real dichotomy. I looked to see when it was published after reading since in some ways it reads like an old Harlequin romance.  Yet, in other ways, it is very contemporary.  The old feeling is perhaps since some characters feel a bit cliché, with their speech or actions a bit abrupt to be realistic.

But the woman in the story is in a position of authority, self-sufficient and divorced, which is not your typical female in a romance.  The male is not a man whore, alphahole, or billionaire. He comes from a tough childhood but has worked his way up to a middle-class guy working with some wealthy, influential people.

The trope of them having a night six years ago, not seeing each other since but always wanting each other is possible but after all that time I think it happened too fast.  And it’s all a little too easy.

The mystery, a murder, is a nice adventure for the story.  The police procedures seemed reasonable enough for fiction and possible.  The outcome was a bit twisty and not clear immediately.

Many of the supporting characters were interesting and enjoyable.  It seems this series goes on with the same couple, more like urban fantasy.  I like that difference, as well as the more contemporary, realistic characters. I give the author credit for a more unique, interesting world and definitely plan to read more in this series.  In July, the tenth book in the series will be released.

I can't really remember any time when I wasn't reading.I LOVE books and what they give me.It's an opportunity to learn new things, see new places, live different emotions in a "safe" way.It lets me live in a new world.

I read all types of books but my favorites are urban fantasy and romantic suspense.I like some romance and some action / adventure / mystery in everything.I like sex in my books but please, only between TWO people.Intimate conversation is equally important to the sex in a book.It lets me see the characters. The other thing I enjoy is humor.I'll be doing a feature monthly called Thrifty Thursday, which reviews books (ebooks)that have been available for free.
