Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

THE PURPOSE OF THRIFTY THURSDAY IS TO PICK A BOOK WHICH WAS FREE (AT SOME POINT).

It’s currently $ 5.99 on Amazon, Nook, and Kobo.   It was free on November 10, 2015.

This choice worked on many levels. It was a Kindle freebie and I’m trying to read and review some of my massive collection of those. The author is Jennifer Armentrout. She will be at Nola Storycon so I want to have read some of her books.

Obsidian is a young adult paranormal story.  There are high school kids, aliens and action / adventure. There is even a budding romance.  I liked the characters but wanted more depth.

This makes it clear to me why I don’t read young adult very often.  Teenagers are still trying things out and developing judgement.  Some are contrary and rebellious.  Some of their antics make me roll my eyes. Growth is one thing; lying to yourself is another. I guess growth happens when one is honest with oneself.

There is not much romance here and no sex.  This is appropriate for young adult, so that’s good news.  But I LIKE some romance and some sex.  So again not so much what I want to read.

The aliens and action/adventure are built slowly and not enough detail for me.  This aspect was very interesting though.  Overall,  this is a good read, but with so many great books I’m lucky to have, not sure when I will continue in the series.  There are 5.5 books in the series to date.

Her book Obsidian has been optioned for a major motion picture and her Covenant Series has been optioned for TV. I can't really remember any time when I wasn't reading.I LOVE books and what they give me.It's an opportunity to learn new things, see new places, live different emotions in a "safe" way.It lets me live in a new world.

I read all types of books but my favorites are urban fantasy and romantic suspense.I like some romance and some action / adventure / mystery in everything.I like sex in my books but please, only between TWO people.Intimate conversation is equally important to the sex in a book.It lets me see the characters. The other thing I enjoy is humor.I'll be doing a feature monthly called Thrifty Thursday, which reviews books (ebooks)that have been available for free.

Friend me at Goodreads.

  1. I have a copy of this on audio, but haven’t listened to it yet. I won it in a contest. I haven’t read this author yet, but I’ve been wanting to read her for a while. I’m curious if the characters get more depth in the second book. Great review.

    • melanie – Thank you! I’m curious about if it develops further also. Since it is the same characters, meaning urban fantasy instead of paranormal romance (where it is a new couple every book), I think it will develop further.

    • leona – I’m guilty of not reading books once I own them because I have other books which are on deadline to review or to go back to the library, and since I own them I can read them anytime, right? That is part of the Thrifty Thursday concept was to get myself to read at least one of the freebies I have. I seem to “buy” one almost every day, so that means I only pile up about 29 more every month waiting to be read. LOL.
