His past is better left forgotten...
Former Army helicopter pilot Jake Donovan is lucky to be alive. At least that's what his team of neurosurgeons said. But he knows differently. Jake's crimes almost cost Holly Hoffman her life, and even though he can't remember, the pain in her eyes is something he'll never forget.
Holly's done being a victim. As a trauma nurse her skills are needed by a humanitarian group providing medical aid after a killer storm ravages the Gulf Coast of Texas. Saving lives however, wont be an option when a madman wants her dead.
Can Jake and Holly shed the weight of his dark past, or will their happily-ever-after have a fatal ending.
In the first book of this series, Hell or High Water, (****spoiler ahead if you haven’t read it!****), we were stunned to learn that the evil Johnny Darling was Jake Donovan, a man that grew up with the Wolfe Pack and was considered to have been killed in action in Afghanistan. I’ve been dying to read his story since.
It’s been two years and he’s now in Murdoch, Texas working his aunt’s ranch after having left Lost and Found, Inc. When he’s asked to help out a neighboring city that was devasted by a hurricane, he finds himself working with Holly Hoffman, the woman he kidnapped during his time as Darling. While he can’t forgive himself, she has and desperately needs him to get over it.
I’ve missed this series and it didn’t take long for me to be reminded of Alexander’s strong writing and storytelling chops. This story was brutal at times with some pretty ruthless villains. In the midst of all this is the developing relationship between Jake and Holly where we learn so much more about them. The tension is exceptional and I was often stunned by the casualties.
I really enjoyed this story and loved how Jake’s situation was resolved. It was also nice to get updates on the characters from the earlier stories as well. This still is one of my favorite series.
I also love to talk about books. There’s nothing more exciting than to finish a great story and cover it A to Z with other people, exploring different perspectives and points of view. So, if you see something on my shelf you’d like to talk about, send me a message and we’ll talk!
