Something is out there, something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse of it, and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.

Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remains, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now that the boy and girl are four, it's time to go, but the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat--blindfolded--with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. Something is following them all the while, but is it man, animal, or monster?

Interweaving past and present, Bird Box is a snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

This was a creepy story, not necessarily thrilling. It’s an apocalyptic world where sight outside of a closed environment puts a person at risk. It’s told in the voice of Malorie, a young woman who is pregnant at the time the threat escalates and changes everyday existence for those on the planet.

It was an interesting story, made more intriguing by the transitions between the past and present as Malorie reflects on the beginning in the context of her thinking and journey in the present. Other characters in the story were described more so from their human nature perspectives rather than anything about their backgrounds prior to the apocalypse.

I liked the story though didn’t love it. It was longer than necessary given the limits of what was actually told. The narrator was excellent, however, adding a sinister element to the story.

I LOVE reading and am just crazy about so many series and writers. I’m open to exploring new authors and genres and appreciate those who not only write well but can deliciously craft a character and a tale. Your suggestions for new authors and titles are very much welcomed.

I also love to talk about books. There’s nothing more exciting than to finish a great story and cover it A to Z with other people, exploring different perspectives and points of view. So, if you see something on my shelf you’d like to talk about, send me a message and we’ll talk!

  1. I would love to like it, but since I am not at WP I can only write to you this way. That is a nice and decently written critic even though it is negative. Thanks for sharing, Jonetta.
