Talking Between Reads (TBR): The TBR Book Tag

Talking Between Reads (TBR) is a monthly discussion post where we talk about different topics from books to blogging and anything else we think you guys might enjoy. Stop by for new topics.

Rantings of a Reading Addict posted recently The TBR Book Tag and it looks fun and we all need to work on our TBR piles so let’s see how the ladies here at The Book Nympho answered the tag.

1. How do you keep track of your TBR Pile?

Anne:

I use Goodreads shelves.  I have a few types of shelves. One is a list of genres, so I can find a book in a particular genre. Another type of shelf tells me where / how I got the book – own, audio-own, Netgalley-author-publisher, kfree (for Kindle freebie purchases).  Last I have a TBR funnel of 3 shelves – 1NOW, 2get and 3tbr.  1NOW is books I need to read soon for review, or library books which will come due or that I just really want to read. 2get is books I want to get for review or from the library.  3tbr is mostly books I purchased which I haven’t managed to read yet.

When I finish a book and pick my next read, I look at my 1NOW shelf.  When I get a new book for review or the library, I delete it from 2get and add it to 1NOW.  If I purchase a book I really want, it goes on either 1NOW or 3tbr depending on a variety of factors.

Jennifer:

Once upon a time I used an Excel spreadsheet but now I use Goodreads. I set up a shelf for my print TBR and audiobook TBR. I haven’t bothered with a shelf just for ebooks.

Jonetta:

I use Goodreads. I only have one exclusive shelf for all my books designated TBR but do have a bookshelf to distinguish my audiobooks. I also am in a group on Goodreads where I create a list of the series I want to focus on for the year. I maintain a personal group to keep track of the books I want to read each month and the audiobooks that I’ve accumulated and want to make certain I get to this year.

2. Is your TBR mostly print or ebook?

Anne:

Ebooks.

Jennifer:

Ebooks = Nook ( 124 )  Kindle ( 80 )

Print = 187

audio = 96

Jonetta:

eBooks and audiobooks. I have some print books but they’re ones that were given to me. I no longer read print.

3. A book that’s been on your TBR the longest.

Anne:

Well I just started using the 3 shelf book funnel in the last year. The other kindle freebies are just out there by genre.  The oldest book in Goodreads Want to Read is Dead or Alive by Tom Clancy.  I also have a couple old Netgalley books, but I read and reviewed the oldest earlier this year!

Jennifer:

This is hard since I didn’t start with Goodreads but Shelfari and that account is closed. I really wish that Goodreads allowed you to sort your shelves by the release date of the books. I figure the book I’ve had on my TBR the longest would be on my Nook. The first book I purchased for my Nook is Be Mine Tonight (Brotherhood of Blood #1) by Kathryn Smith.

Jonetta:

Goodreads (and Shelfari) allows you to sort your TBR shelf by date added. The oldest date is January 2011 and it’s Jane Eyre.

4. A book you’ve recently added to your TBR.

Anne:

Recently, I received approval to review Ash and Quill by Rachel Caine (moved from 2get to 1NOW). The last book I added to those I want to review (2get) is Fatal Threat   by Marie Force. The latest book I
added just because I want to read it is Dhampir by Barb and JC Hendee (2get). The last Kindle freebie I added was SCORCH by Liliana Hart (kfree, rom-suspense).

Jennifer:

After finishing my first Kristen Ashley book, The Deep End I added The Farthest Edge to my TBR pile.

Jonetta:

I just received the audiobook version of Mr. President by Katy Evans for review.

5. A book in your TBR strictly because of it’s beautiful cover.

Anne:

I don’t pay much attention to covers. But the prettiest cover I guess is Seven Black Diamonds by Melissa Marr.

Jennifer:

I’m a sucker for a pretty cover and I don’t buy print books that much anymore much less hardback books. I love the Hollows series by Kim Harrison and I listened to them on audio and knew I would listen to The Turn but the cover is so pretty that I also bought it in hardback.

Jonetta:

I really don’t choose books, ever, based on the cover (learned that lesson at a young age) but Prescott Lane always has interesting covers. This one I find beautiful.

6. A book on your TBR you never plan on reading.

Anne:

HaHa.  I always PLAN to read them. The closest might be The Reburialists by JC Nelson. It’s on my 1NOW but I don’t know. I skimmed some reviews and my friends weren’t thrilled with it.

Jennifer:

Well this seemed silly when I first read it but them I looked through my TBR shelves and found one that might fit. Fifty Shades of Mr Darcy: A Parody by William Codpiece Thwackery

Jonetta:

I have a really tough time removing books from my TBR shelf, especially if I own the book. But, I really didn’t connect with Rachel Vincent’s Shifters series after the first book. I know I’ll never read the rest but….

7. An unpublished book on your TBR you’re excited for.

Anne:

Cold Reign by Faith Hunter.

Jennifer:

Bombshell (Hollywood A-List #1) by C.D. Reiss

Jonetta:

Secrets in Death (In Death #45) by J. D. Robb

8. A book on your TBR everyone’s read but you.

Anne:

A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole.  I finally listened to the first in this series but it was the only one NOT narrated by Robert Petkoff!  (Now there is a release with his narration) So I need to get to this to hear him.

Jennifer:

Naked in Death (In Death #1) by J.D. Robb – I will listen to this title before the end of 2017!

Jonetta:

Written in Red (The Others #1) by Anne Bishop. I’m trying, I’m trying! I even have all of the audiobooks.

9. A book on your TBR everyone recommends to you

Anne:

Assasin’s Aprentice by Robin Hobb.  I just started listening to it. I used to think I didn’t like historical fantasy but I love it with the right narrator.

Jennifer:

Red Rising by Pierce Brown – I have it on my Nook or Kindle. I’ll read it.

Jonetta:

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood

10. A book on your TBR you’re dying to read.

Anne:

Wildfire by Ilona Andrews.  I’ve pre-ordered it but I also hope to review it.

Jennifer:

Buns by Alice Clayton – It will surely deliver laughs and sexy times.

Jonetta:

The Chosen by J. R. Ward

11. How many books on your Goodreads TBR shelf?

Anne:

2,883, at my current rate, that’s only 10-15 years. I hope I’ll live longer and retire so I can read more!

Jennifer:

1,224

Jonetta:

4,685

Tag, you’re it!

I coexist with my husband of 15 years, our 11-year-old son and two chilled cats in the Deep South.

After 17 years I've finally finished my BA in English (no I do not want to be a teacher). Before majoring in English I would not have touched anything labeled "classic", but I have enjoyed a few along the way in my college career.

While I hated to read growing up, I am now an avid book reader and audiobook listener. I love rejecting reality one book at a time. I only read fiction within my favorite (at least to date) genres which include: most romance (paranormal, contemporary, D/s, BDSM, M/M)Urban Fantasy, and a few YA (mostly PNR or UF from favorite adult authors, but I'm slowly stepping out of my comfort zone after enjoying a few contemporary YA novels in adolescent literature class I took).

      • Karin Anderson

Haha. I’m trying to tame it at the moment, but it’s taking quite a bit of time. I’ve tried importing a list of the books I own into Goodreads, but it replaces my ratings, shelves and read/to-read information for anything already in Goodreads.

    • I could not manage without GR! It has great tools that fit my needs like a glove. They don’t do a good job of informing you of them but I’ve learned a lot by participating in groups with seasoned users.
