Lexxie’s First Time . . . with Audiobooks

Lexxie from (un) Conventional Bookviews walks us through her first time . . . with audiobooks

When I listened to my very first audiobook, after reading my fellow bloggers amazing reviews for all things audio (yes, I’m looking at you, Felicia @ Geeky Blogger, Melanie @ Hot Listens and Jennifer @ The Book Nympho), it was far from a success.

I had picked one of my favorite books to start with, as I had a long flight across the Atlantic, all on my own, and I figured an audiobook would keep me company, right ? The book was Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, narrated by Davina Porter. Her voice is very soothing, and the narration of Outlander a bit slow. And I think that I must have been much more tired than I thought before I boarded my flight, as I promptly fell asleep and woke back up when we were landing… Still having stories about Jamie and Claire in my ears, and having had very vivid dreams about historical Scottish countryside and hot romance between a strong female and a stubborn clansman…

I have since listened to Outlander again, with the speed at 1.25, and it was awesome, but that very first time didn’t really work all that well for me, without being the fault neither of the story, nor the narrator.

Now, when I listen to an audiobook, it’s almost like watching a movie, and I love how different narrators are able to bring a story to life with their voice, their cadence, their pitch and their intonation. It’s truly a difficult craft, because they have to know the story well enough to enact parts of it, and tell their listeners other parts.

I’m not sure I’ll ever become as proficient at listening as the bloggers I listed above, but I do enjoy listening, and for me, so far, it’s mostly a way for me to re-visit favorite stories, by having someone else tell me the story, rather than sitting with my kindle or a paper book and reading it myself.

I coexist with my husband of 15 years, our 11-year-old son and two chilled cats in the Deep South.

After 17 years I've finally finished my BA in English (no I do not want to be a teacher). Before majoring in English I would not have touched anything labeled "classic", but I have enjoyed a few along the way in my college career.

While I hated to read growing up, I am now an avid book reader and audiobook listener. I love rejecting reality one book at a time. I only read fiction within my favorite (at least to date) genres which include: most romance (paranormal, contemporary, D/s, BDSM, M/M)Urban Fantasy, and a few YA (mostly PNR or UF from favorite adult authors, but I'm slowly stepping out of my comfort zone after enjoying a few contemporary YA novels in adolescent literature class I took).

  1. I started off doing on revisits to stories I loved. But eventually moved to going straight to audio. I’ve yet to sleep with an audiobook, but I’m usually doing something while I listen. Working, playing a game on my iPad, driving, cleaning, etc. If I was just sitting and listening, I would so fall asleep too. I’m glad you didn’t give up on audios.

    • Ha! I know you go to sleep with an audiobook :p I was trying to figure out which book you were listening to one night at RT when you were in bed when we arrived in the room 😀
I really enjoy audios now, and I’m happy, too, that I didn’t give up on them!

  2. Outlander is a tough beast to tackle, especially for your first audiobook! I started and stopped it at least five different times before finally making it through. Davina is amazing, though.

  3. Oh, I’m so glad you didn’t give up on Outlander! But, there’s nothing quite like the disorientation you feel when you awake with your audiobook still going on in your earbuds/headphones. But, oh, I can imagine those dreams you experienced:)
