A colonel receives five seeds in the mail—and dies within weeks. A young bride disappears immediately after her wedding. An old hat and a Christmas goose are the only clues to a stolen jewel. I get emails occasionally from Tantor with a free audio download. So since June is Audiobook Month, I decided it was a very appropriate Thrifty Thursday selection. This is a classic mystery tale, set in the late 1800s in England.
Who doesn’t love a British accent? I am listening to many more of my books set in England for just this reason. Simon Prebble does a fine job with male and female voices differentiated. I could distinguish which character was speaking for the main ones. The pacing seemed a little slow; I know there are options on some players to change the speed but I never use it. He made it a pleasure to listen.
I have read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes a few times, and some of the stories separately. It was interesting to listen to an audio version. This included some but not all of the short stories. The synopsis as well as the link above, to Goodreads, lists the 10 stories in this edition. It lists as third in a series and the Goodreads series includes 9 volumes.
I’ve always enjoyed mysteries and Sherlock Holmes is classic and witty. This particular set was still clever but the solutions did not seem to bring justice to very many. In fact, some did not even get to know the truth (because they wouldn’t believe it and it would only hurt them more). So while I enjoy the ingenuity of learning the truth about the mystery, I found these to be less satisfying. Perhaps, it is related to the clear lack of rights of women in this time period. Still, I will always be happy to read or listen to these classic tales by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I read all types of books but my favorites are urban fantasy and romantic suspense.I like some romance and some action / adventure / mystery in everything.I like sex in my books but please, only between TWO people.Intimate conversation is equally important to the sex in a book.It lets me see the characters. The other thing I enjoy is humor.I'll be doing a feature monthly called Thrifty Thursday, which reviews books (ebooks)that have been available for free.
