Dillon Alexander has been Kit Derby’s nemesis since third grade, when he beat her in the school spelling bee. They’ve been competing ever since, driving each other to be the best at everything from science fairs to bake sales. While working together one night during their senior year, they stopped bickering long enough to share an emotionally charged kiss. But a tragedy that same night left them both racked with guilt, driving Dillon out of town and leaving Kit determined to keep her distance.
Now an emergency room physician, Dillon has returned to their hometown of Chance, Nebraska. Soon he and Kit fall back into old habits, sparring in public while trying to stay out of each other’s arms. But when a blizzard traps them overnight at Kit’s grandmother’s farmhouse, the real competition begins: Who will be the first to give in to the feelings they’ve denied for a decade?
Dillon and Kit grew up together, competing with each other, even at the same college, and are both medical professionals. Dillon has been out of town in the service, Doctors Without Borders and in practice elsewhere. After ten years, he is back in the hometown. Kit has been in the small town where they grew up other than her college time. This is a rivals to lovers story.
Turned Up starts out very antagonistic; it is difficult to believe at their ages and professional capacities they would act this way. When they fight, they get each other to do better. I found it tedious. They have always had “chemistry” and the sexy times are hot. They get snowed in together which gives them time to reconnect. I love Erin Nicholas for her humor but didn’t find it in the dialogue here.
I believe I would have enjoyed this more if I had read the first two books in the Taking Chances series (it is in Kindle Unlimited) prior to this one. It would have given me more of a connection to the rest of the town’s characters and the other two couples. It might have even laid some groundwork for this couple. My recommendation would be to read in order for this trilogy which is now complete, and do try some of her other series which I have enjoyed more.
I read all types of books but my favorites are urban fantasy and romantic suspense.I like some romance and some action / adventure / mystery in everything.I like sex in my books but please, only between TWO people.Intimate conversation is equally important to the sex in a book.It lets me see the characters. The other thing I enjoy is humor.I'll be doing a feature monthly called Thrifty Thursday, which reviews books (ebooks)that have been available for free.
