Their spark is immediate
Kingston McNally lost men when someone betrayed his team, and now he's out for retribution. His quest for the enemy's courier leads him to Cameroon and Allie Redding, a petite Peace Corps volunteer as stubborn as she is brave. Their attraction is immediate, but Allie has secrets of her own...and she's not giving them up easily.
But their secrets could burn them both
Allie's life has been spent hiding in plain sight, but she's had enough of her cloak-and-dagger existence. On her way home, her plane is hijacked-and King saves her life. But that doesn't mean she owes him anything...even if he is the most damnably sexy man she's ever laid eyes on. He's got black ops and secrets written all over him, and trust is a two-way street.
The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to read a book which was free (at some point).
Kindle freebie on June 14, 2017 (currently $6.15 at Amazon, $7.49 at Barnes & Noble as of writing this post)
Overall rating 4.03 with 120 ratings and 53 reviews
I’ve been lucky to get several new releases as Kindle freebies this summer. They seem to be available for just a day or two but since I get about a zillion freebie emails (and read them all) I get some good ones. Flash of Fury is a really good one.
Romantic suspense is a favorite genre but sometimes the romance isn’t very realistic or the characters aren’t developed or there is too much focus on the romance without enough of the action. None of these problems happened here. I especially like the action and military skills are woven into the story. We get to see the mission and the “spec ops.” It’s not just something that happens somewhere else or in the background.
As is often the case in this genre, the romance happens quickly. It’s realistic because of the emotional upheaval in the suspense and danger. But also because they talk; they get to know each other. Allie is smart and brave. She is also honest with herself about what she feels and with King, which I love to see. King is skilled and caring but has a past and current life which makes him feel undeserving of any relationship. He also doesn’t lie to himself.
There’s some mystery of who are the leaks, traitors and informants to the bad guys, which only adds to the unease. The nonstop action of constantly getting shot and chased down, and the politics of covert missions all make this a wild ride you won’t want to put down. It’s the start of the Endgame Ops series and I’m ready for more. There is a prequel novella in an anthology, Way of the Warrior and it’s available at the library so I downloaded it now! Maybe that will tide me over for a short while.
I tweeted the author since I couldn’t find any information on the next book in the series and here’s her response (YAY!):
Sweet!!! Jude’s story is up next–April 2018 and then in the fall of 2018 you get…well, you’ll see. 😜

I read all types of books but my favorites are urban fantasy and romantic suspense.I like some romance and some action / adventure / mystery in everything.I like sex in my books but please, only between TWO people.Intimate conversation is equally important to the sex in a book.It lets me see the characters. The other thing I enjoy is humor.I'll be doing a feature monthly called Thrifty Thursday, which reviews books (ebooks)that have been available for free.
