The Cutter Cay series  so far has been about the three Cutter brothers. Now, we learn about Jonah, the previously unknown half-brother.  He actually had more of his parent’s time and attention growing up than the original brothers. But he hasn’t had the wealth or fame of the family.  I was very curious to learn more about him and how his newly found brothers would get along. Stormchaser is my favorite book so far. In addition to the suspense of the salvage projects, this one adds a historic sort of archaeological project, which to a great extent salvage is as well. There is deception in the crew (not completely unusual) and some high-tech or paranormal aspects of the project. As with the rest of the […]

Excerpt   Quinn had taken the floor for exactly the reasons she’d said, in addition to the knowledge that however little she liked to think it mattered, Marcus was ten years older than she was. And he was a secret stress case who carried all his tension in his back and shoul- ders. She should know, since she’d nearly sprained her thumbs trying to dig the knots out during a massage that had started out sexy and turned into a to-the-death battle between Quinn and the long muscles lining Marcus’s spine. Marcus didn’t need to screw up his back by lying on the floor for eight hours, was her point. Not that she would ever say that to him. She didn’t have a death wish. […]

When beer and wine saleswoman Evelyn Benedict reluctantly agreed to allow brewery owner Austin Fitzgerald to do a ride-along with her to visit her territory, she had no idea how her life would be permanently altered. She’s from blue collar roots and he’s a trust fund baby but they fit almost perfectly. It’s the “almost” though that might just do them in. Especially when his best friend, Ross Hoffman enters the relationship.   Despite Evelyn’s childish reactions throughout the story, I really liked her. Those reactions were her coping mechanisms (scream and run), developed as a result of a tough childhood. She’s strong, smart and resourceful. I liked how she lived life in the moment, full out. Austin was equally intriguing, motivated to […]

Wow! Two romances in one and the action is riveting.   Beatrice is in labor and Cal agreed to her plan to have the baby at home. No sooner than they and Hunter arrive home from Chicago, trouble shows up in a big and awful way. With all agents assigned and out of town, it all falls in the hands of Connor McKenzie, the more than able Shadow Force International (SFI) office manager, and Sabrina Merinos, one of their pilots.   I loved this story. Seeing Beatrice tamed by labor was an experience in itself. The assault on her and Cal’s home was chilling and everything that happened going forward was breathtaking. I’d always wondered about Connor and in just a few pages, […]

In just one day, Annie Anderson’s life turned sideways and then completely upside down when she comes home early, finding her boyfriend in bed with another woman. If that wasn’t sad enough, she ends up losing her new job on the first day. And yet it gets worse. When she goes away for a much needed excursion to a fabulous island with her friends, who shows up there but the cheating ex and his gorgeous arm candy.   As bad as Annie’s day from hell was, it was related in such a way that I couldn’t stop laughing. While my heart broke for her, Annie’s story is so cleverly written that I also found the humor in the situation. The escapades during the […]

Separation Games by C.D. Reiss

Separation Games by C.D. Reiss

WARNING: While I did not have an issue with it and I thought that Reiss handled the scene and characters with care, there is a scene between Adam and Diana that some readers may not be comfortable with. While I would not call it a simulated rape scene it does push the line that some readers may not want to experience.    CD Reiss never fails to leave me feeling emotionally drained and satisfied all at the same time. I have been waiting for Separation Games since I was 50% into Marriage Games. Diana and Adam are two wonderfully broken people. They lived five years of marriage together never really being their true selves or the real couple they could have been. After Diana left Adam they both […]

So this was a surprise and a great one! I was out of sorts and this was exactly what I needed. A thought-provoking story which also snuck into my heart. Two very different people shutting themselves off from relationships to avoid getting hurt. Their situations and how they resolved them was smart and very believable. Zach is an EMT who takes care of everyone. Kiera is a graphics designer on the hottest LARP game on the market. They handle things very differently emotionally and in their style, which means they can learn a lot from each other. Learning about each other, they learn about themselves. And it’s awesome! I liked them both. They were strong and smart and caring and competent. I appreciate […]

5 Favorite Scenes: BELLE CHASSE by Suzanne Johnson

5 Favorite Scenes: BELLE CHASSE by Suzanne Johnson

5 Favorite Scenes: BELLE CHASSE   Scenes are hard-working things. They all serve a function in a novel: to move the story along from one point to the next. They are the building blocks upon which any work of fiction is created. If they don’t do their job properly, the story stalls or heads off in the wrong direction. They have to be herded like sheep. But like any flock of sheep, some scenes are the favorites of the shepherd—or border collie, or novelist, in this case. Here are five of my favorites from BELLE CHASSE (sans spoilers), in no particular order. 1) Surgery by Dr. Strangepirate. Heroine DJ has a bullet in her thigh that needs removing. There is no anesthesia. There is […]
