So this was a surprise and a great one! I was out of sorts and this was exactly what I needed. A thought-provoking story which also snuck into my heart. Two very different people shutting themselves off from relationships to avoid getting hurt. Their situations and how they resolved them was smart and very believable. Zach is an EMT who takes care of everyone. Kiera is a graphics designer on the hottest LARP game on the market. They handle things very differently emotionally and in their style, which means they can learn a lot from each other. Learning about each other, they learn about themselves. And it’s awesome! I liked them both. They were strong and smart and caring and competent. I appreciate […]

5 Favorite Scenes: BELLE CHASSE by Suzanne Johnson

5 Favorite Scenes: BELLE CHASSE by Suzanne Johnson

5 Favorite Scenes: BELLE CHASSE   Scenes are hard-working things. They all serve a function in a novel: to move the story along from one point to the next. They are the building blocks upon which any work of fiction is created. If they don’t do their job properly, the story stalls or heads off in the wrong direction. They have to be herded like sheep. But like any flock of sheep, some scenes are the favorites of the shepherd—or border collie, or novelist, in this case. Here are five of my favorites from BELLE CHASSE (sans spoilers), in no particular order. 1) Surgery by Dr. Strangepirate. Heroine DJ has a bullet in her thigh that needs removing. There is no anesthesia. There is […]

Blog tour: Beard Science by Penny Reid

Penny Reid is the bomb; an absolute favorite author for the kind of contemporary romance I enjoy.  Her books are smart and funny with relatable characters.  All her series are amazing.  This one is in the Winston Brothers series, set in Tennessee, with 6 boys and one girl as siblings. Cletus. OMG.  I. LOVE. CLETUS.  He will be my book boyfriend forever. He’s not typical but I get him. He’s very smart, and funny, and controlled. Seeing the focused Cletus lose it, is precious. Cletus does not like bullies. He does like cars, music, pie, and making deals. Jennifer is perhaps my favorite lady in this series. She has led a sheltered life, being home-schooled, and working in a bakery for […]

It’s Halloween and this day is a challenge for both Annalyse Reynolds and Holt Miller but for different reasons. She’s emerging from a 5-year hibernation following a personal tragedy and he’s still a bit stuck following his. Their chance encounter has seismic results.   I won’t tell you any of the details of this story because the journey and discoveries are frankly delicious. This isn’t a predictable story by any measure and that kept me eagerly turning the pages. I loved their relationship, which begins tentatively and cautiously for very good reasons. Annalyse’s blog posts are deftly interspersed throughout, creating a perfect emotional pitch and communication crutch that made the story even more interesting. Holt’s gradual growth was realistic and authentic.   There […]

Blog Tour: Curse on the Land by Faith Hunter

Blog Tour: Curse on the Land by Faith Hunter

The Soulwood series is a spin-off series from the Jane Yellowrock series by (the awesome) Faith Hunter. It may not be necessary to read Jane to read Nell but why wouldn’t you?  They are both excellent stories.  The introduction to Nell is in a short story Off the Grid and then the first in the series is Blood of the Earth which I reviewed here. Curse on the Land had three things I wanted and needed. First, it had Soul, who I missed in the first book. Second, it had more depth and development of what is going on with Rick LaFleur. I really enjoyed both these tremendously. It gave more insight into PsyLED. Ricky Bo has some major events. Character development makes for […]

Shadow Force International operative Jaxon (Jax) Sloan finds himself assigned to a case that pairs him with CIA Agent Ruby McKellen, the woman who stole his heart during a mission in Morroco and derailed his career as a Navy SEAL. It also didn’t do her career any favors as she’s now on probation. Both are now trying to find her former partner who’s escaped from jail. She’s trying to prove his innocence, Jax…not so much as he was responsible for putting him there.   This was a real puzzler of a case as there’s so much subterfuge and duplicity you never know who’s telling the truth or whom to believe. It was often exciting and tension filled with one disaster after another. I was […]

What can I say, Gin’s my girl! In Unraveled she shows the underbelly that there’s a new sheriff in town. I love that Unraveled has Philly in it! He’s a likable character like Finn and can deliver the snarky lines and is great to have for back up. Gin is working to figure how who is in the Circle, a super-secret group that we hear about in the previous book, Bitter Bite. While the plot for this installment starts out in Ashland, Gin, and her posse take a weekend vacation to Bullet Pointe. Bullet Pointe is a western theme park and hotel resort near Ashland and Finn got the deed to it from his dead mother. If you’re a fan of the series then you know that […]
