Lexxie’s First Time . . . with Audiobooks

Lexxie from (un) Conventional Bookviews walks us through her first time . . . with audiobooks

When I listened to my very first audiobook, after reading my fellow bloggers amazing reviews for all things audio (yes, I’m looking at you, Felicia @ Geeky Blogger, Melanie @ Hot Listens and Jennifer @ The Book Nympho), it was far from a success.

I had picked one of my favorite books to start with, as I had a long flight across the Atlantic, all on my own, and I figured an audiobook would keep me company, right ? The book was Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, narrated by Davina Porter. Her voice is very soothing, and the narration of Outlander a bit slow. And I think that I must have been much more tired than I thought before I boarded my flight, as I promptly fell asleep and woke back up when we were landing… Still having stories about Jamie and Claire in my ears, and having had very vivid dreams about historical Scottish countryside and hot romance between a strong female and a stubborn clansman…

I have since listened to Outlander again, with the speed at 1.25, and it was awesome, but that very first time didn’t really work all that well for me, without being the fault neither of the story, nor the narrator.

Now, when I listen to an audiobook, it’s almost like watching a movie, and I love how different narrators are able to bring a story to life with their voice, their cadence, their pitch and their intonation. It’s truly a difficult craft, because they have to know the story well enough to enact parts of it, and tell their listeners other parts.

I’m not sure I’ll ever become as proficient at listening as the bloggers I listed above, but I do enjoy listening, and for me, so far, it’s mostly a way for me to re-visit favorite stories, by having someone else tell me the story, rather than sitting with my kindle or a paper book and reading it myself.

Different Types of Narration (and a few of my Faves)     Hi Guys! It is Felicia The Geeky Blogger here talking about Audiobooks for June is Audiobook Month. I was trying to come up with a topic that I haven’t discussed before (that is really hard for a gal that has been talking about audiobooks forever) and finally realized that I have never talked about Narration Types. So here we go…. There are 4 main narration types: Single Narration Dual Narration Duet Narration Full Cast Narration I believe they each have their place and if done well then can make a book sparkle. I, of course have my favorite styles but want to give samples of each one. I have picked from some […]

JIAM: Sophia’s Aha Moments in Audio Listening

My Aha Moments In Audio Listening   My first listening experience with audio books was in August of 2014.  Although, come to think on it… it could be argued that it started when I was a child of six or seven sitting on the floor of my room engrossed in a book on a record.  “When you hear the chimes, please turn the page…” But yes, 2014, I chose Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and narrated by the incomparable Davina Porter.  It took me nearly three months to listen to all 32 hours and 43 minutes of the beast.  Incidentally, that’s the one to snag if you want to get your free Audible trial credit’s worth.  Haha!  But at that point, I thought, wow, […]

Audiobook Palate Cleansers by Chelsea Mueller

Welcome, Chelsea Mueller back to The Book Nympho. This time, she’s talking audiobooks. I’m a rather finicky audiobook reader. It has to be the right story with just the right narration to hook me. The best ones keep me in my car after the commute is over because I have to hear how the chapter ends. I’m much less fickle with printed or Kindle books. This might explain why I tend to think of my audio reads as palate cleansers. I can delve into the heavy and dark or the tortured romances in print, and then take a reprieve with the perfect balanced read for audio. As such, here are my top three recommendations for reads that hit all the marks—stellar storytelling, pitch-perfect narration, and utterly […]

Why I Love Audiobooks A few years ago I didn’t understand why people enjoyed audiobooks. A friend of mine recommended them to me and I was all about the “nah, not for me”. After a while she wore me down and I agreed to try them. I listened while I was doing the housework, driving in the car, and in bed, but to no avail. I just couldn’t get on with them. I either became distracted or fell asleep, either way it ended up with me missing chunks of the story and having to rewind. However, last summer I had a lot going on personally and fell into one of the biggest reading slumps I ever had, which felt like the ultimate betrayal, as reading […]

Audiobooks: 10 Things Geeky Blogger listens for….

Audiobooks: 10 Things I listen for….   Hi y’all! Felicia the Geeky Blogger here to talk about the top 10 things I look for when picking narrators to listen too. I have been asked this question several times over the years. When Jennifer asked me to do a guest post–I knew just what topic to tackle!   My top 10 things that land a narrator on my “forever” list:   Pacing: This seems like a strange number one but it is the most obvious when listening to a sample. If the narrator is pausing too much, taking too many breaths, or rushing through sentences it can ruin a book. I like someone who is pretty even with their pacing. It makes listening to them in […]

Listen Up! to What Jen Twimom has to say about Audiobooks

For many, to include myself, listening to audiobooks is a learned pleasure. Figuring out how to listen attentively and appreciate the nuances of the narration can take a newbie some time. Listening to a book you’ve previously read is a great way to break into audiobooks. This is especially true if you loved the book originally, and it is narrated by a top-tier performer. I started my love affair with audiobooks in this manner. Our lovely blog hostess here at The Book Nympho, Jennifer, along with a few other “diehard” listeners, helped me find a solid series/narrator combination to help “ease” me into listening to books. I completed a “re-read” of the Kate Daniel series by Ilona Andrews, which is narrated by Renee Raudman. This […]
