He's found her at last
Cain Killion knows himself to be a damaged man, his only saving grace the extrasensory connection to blood that he uses to catch murderers. His latest case takes a macabre turn when he discovers a familiar and haunting symbol linking the crime to his own horrific past-and only one woman could know what it means.

Only to lose her to a nightmare
Mercy Ledger is brave, resilient, beautiful-and in terrible danger. The moment he sees Mercy, Cain knows he's the one who can save her. He also knows he's beyond redemption. But the lines between good and evil blur and the only thing clear to Cain and Mercy is that they belong together. Love is the antidote for blood-but is their bond strong enough to overcome the evil that stalks them?

I won this book in a prize pack from Sourcebooks Casablanca, the publisher, but since it’s easier to read an ebook I got it from the library to read. While this is a romance, it is dark, dark, and dark. A serial killer is in prison and it looks like there is a copycat using the same style. The son of this serial killer, Cain, has a paranormal ability to provide information and works with the FBI.

The characters and their emotions felt authentic. The events are things which could happen. The small paranormal bits were contained enough it wasn’t too unrealistic. I liked the spectrum of good and evil with all the shades. The complexity of characters was excellent and helped to build this dark, terrifying world.

The romance seems to happen quickly as it does in dangerous situations. Having read this a few weeks ago,  the suspense and mystery were particularly memorable for me. The romance felt more in the background. Their connection makes sense with their history. They could accept the horrific facets having those things in their own past. I felt so happy they could feel that acceptance and love from each other.

The mystery of the case is very suspenseful. Throughout it is worrying whether people are going to live; it was heart-wrenching; I felt their distress. I was distressed. In the ending, we get lots of information AND a whole new mystery.

Saving Mercy, is the first in the Fatal Truth series with the next book projected for 2019.  I know this because I tweeted the author after searching a bit on her site. She was kind enough to respond quickly, and offer a signed print copy for a giveaway!  I’m interested in continuing to read even with a long wait, in the meantime I can always check out her other series.

About Abbie Roads

Seven Things about Abbie Roads:

1. She loves Snicker Parfaits. Gotta start with what’s most important, right?

2. She writes dark emotional books featuring damaged characters, but always gives her hero and heroine a happy ending… after torturing them for three hundred pages.

3. By day she’s a mental health counselor known for her blunt, honest style of therapy. At night she burns up the keyboard. Well… Burn might be too strong a word. She at least sits with her hands poised over the keyboard, waiting for inspiration to strike. And when it does—the keyboard might get a little warm.

4. She can’t stand it when people drive slowly in the passing lane. Just saying. That’s major annoying. Right?

5. She loves taking pictures of things she thinks are pretty.

6. She’s represented by Michelle Grajkowski of 3 Seas Literary.

7. Her first book RACE THE DARKNESS was a Publishers Weekly Top 10 Pick for Fall.

Excerpt     The rest of the dinner went well. In fact, Kristine was surprised by how well it was going. She hadn’t dated a guy like Jayce in a long time. Their connection seemed to be almost instantaneous. It was just too bad he was a firefighter—and lived three hours away as the Acela train flies. Actually, a quick plane ride would reduce the commute to only an hour and a half, but the hassle and time it took to go through security would make the trip even longer. Walking down the wide sidewalks of Times Square, hand in hand, sure made her feel as if the trip might be worth the hassle. His hand was warm and rough. For once she wasn’t […]

Who Says Rompers Can’t Stomp? with Adriana Anders

Who Says Rompers Can’t Stomp? with Adriana Anders

Who Says Rompers Can’t Stomp?   I’ve always been one of those people who is constitutionally incapable of choosing just one of anything. Which is why there’s no way I can go into this without putting a little Stomp in my Romp. The fact is, life is a balance, right? The beauty of it is that a heroine can steam up the bedroom and still take down an opponent, as needed.   Case in point: All three of the heroines in my Blank Canvas Series have to fight—for their own survival or for the lives of others—and all three of them kick some bad guy ass.   But since I’m not here to talk about knockouts, I’ll leave you with a romp of an excerpt […]

Do you prefer writing sexy scenes or action scene? with Terry Spear

Do you prefer writing sexy scenes or action scene? with Terry Spear

Do you prefer writing sexy scenes or action scene? I love both. I’m really big into thrillers, mystery, action and adventure, and suspense, so it’s really easy for me to write action scenes. They just come naturally. I can see them happening, and then after I quickly write them down, I’ll go back in to add more emotions, the thrill in the actions, more details. With sexy scenes, I have to work more at them. Why? Because that has to do with the characterization. What one hero would do, another wouldn’t. How one would react in a situation will be different than another. And the same with the heroine. As I develop the characters further, they show their playfulness, their sexier side, the romance, the […]

Check out my review for both books in the Penelope Blue series next Tuesday!   In the mean time enjoy this excerpt from Saving Mr. Perfect. “I’m sorry,” Grant says. “I don’t mean to be so overbearing, but you have to remember that as much as I love you, you’re not a favorite with everyone at the Bureau.” “Give me time,” I say. “I’m only one woman. It might take me a few years, but I’ll get there.” His lips twitch. “Penelope…” “And it’s not as if he said or did anything bad,” I add, eager to leverage that oh-so-promising break in his exterior. “We mostly talked about you. He seemed nice.” “That man is not nice. I don’t want you to have anything to […]

Eye Candy by Jessica Lemmon

Eye Candy by Jessica Lemmon

I have a weakness for romances with friends-to-lovers and Eye Candy by Jessica Lemmon hit the spot! Eye Candy is about two best friends, Jackie and Vince. They share titles as vice-president at a marketing firm, they share pizza, beer and movie nights. They also share the fact they both are divorced and are gun shy about getting back into the dating world. Vince has done the “guy thing” and had a few one-night stands over the years to get over his ex-wife, but he is ready for more with his BFF, Jackie. She on the other hand has dragged her feet in the dating world and he doesn’t want to be her rebound. Vince comes up with a plan to get Jackie out there […]

Jennifer Snow’s 10 Reasons Why Sexy Scenes are Best!

Jennifer Snow’s 10 Reasons Why Sexy Scenes are Best!

Is That a Gun in your Pocket? Nope, it’s a Hard-On: 10 Reasons Why Sexy Scenes are Best! Reason 1: Most hot guys don’t carry guns, but EVERY hot guy has a penis. However, bonus points goes to Police Officer/Military type Heroes who have both! Reason 2: In sexy scenes, our super hunky hero is naked. Enough said. Reason 3: After reading an action scene, readers may want to cuddle with their significant others for protection, but after reading a sexy scene, significant others get laid. Don’t believe me? There was a major baby boom about 10 months after the release of Fifty Shades of Grey.  (Okay, so not an actual fact…might be worth a Google;)) Reason 4: In sexy scenes, readers can be […]

Review   We met both Melody Rodriguez and Trent Hettinger in the first two books of this series. But, we only knew the basics. She’s Evelyn’s best friend, he dated Evelyn briefly. He’s into BDSM and is a Dom. She’s really good at her jobs and is in a committed relationship with him. Now, their story takes major steps backwards in time to share how they came to be.   One of the unexpected bonuses coming out of this story was getting third party perspectives about the Evelyn/Austin/Ross relationship from the very beginning. I wondered during the first two books how much employees and others knew about them, what they thought and that gets answered. And, more details about Evelyn’s dalliance with Trent […]
