Irony 101—The Spider herself snared in someone else’s web…

Another week, another few clues trickling in about the Circle, the mysterious group that supposedly runs the city’s underworld. Gathering intel on my hidden enemies is a painstaking process, but a more immediate mystery has popped up on my radar: a missing girl.

My search for the girl begins on the mean streets of Ashland, but with all the killers and crooks in this city, I’m not holding out much hope that she’s still alive.

A series of clues leads me down an increasingly dark, dangerous path, and I realize that the missing girl is really just the first thread in this web of evil. As an assassin, I’m used to facing down the worst of the worst, but nothing prepares me for this new, terrifying enemy—one who strikes from the shadows and is determined to make me the next victim.

I’m a big fan of Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series for many reasons.

  • Strong likable heroine
    • Really, what’s not to like about a heroine who kills the bad guys and is a great cook. Plus Gin is very loyal to her family and friends.
  • Scene stealing secondary characters
    • Gin is not the only character who is likable. Her gang of crime fighting friends and family brings more than just support to her life and the stories.
  • Great villains
    • Estep keeps cranking out fantastic bad guys.

Snared the sixteenth book in the series as all of the above. I don’t know who Estep has kept me coming back each time. I guess because I know I’m going to have a good time reading/listening to Gin’s adventures.

But as some of my buddies have pointed out in the past there are some repetitive issues. For the most part, they don’t bother me and I’ve come to see them as part of the series. The one that I could live without though is the one that caused me not to enjoy Snared as much as the previous books. Gin’s dreams.

Granted Gin had a traumatic childhood seeing her mother and sister killed so it’s only natural she would suppress some memories, but every (or at least most) installments Gin can’t remember why or how she knows someone “new” she meets only to later in the book have a dream that gives her the answers. I would think after having these dreams so often many of her memories would be triggered and remembered. At least we didn’t have the other plot device that has been used so many times where Fletcher left her a secret file on the current bad guy.

I think the element I liked the most about Snared was the addition of a serial killer as the villain. I cannot believe we’ve not had one before. I mean there as been some nasty villains in Gin’s past so it was nice to see a different type of murder. I also liked the information about Tucker. Now that we have taken a little side step from the Circle story arc I hope the next novel will bring us back and possibly wrap up it.

Anne’s Audio Review I was so excited to get this audio, since I had also listened to Deadly Silence.  In between these two audios in the Blood Brothers series , I listened to the entire  Sin Brothers series which is related.  The Sin Brothers came first if you are OCD like me. Karen White narrated both series so I enjoyed the consistency. While the women have different personalities, most of them sounded the same to me. The men had a little more variation. These are professional,  comfortably paced audio books. The overall story arc continues and I’m happy we learn more in each installment. The Blood brothers were rather isolated in childhood, so they are learning more about themselves and their history all the time. This book also has […]

My friends told me to read this series and I finally came to the party a couple of years ago, listening to audio books while driving back and forth between Minnesota and North Carolina. I fell in love with Merit and Ethan. Strong women with hot guys trying to make the world a better place with their own sassy quirks are always welcome. Reading Blade Bound,  the final book in this series, I felt mostly sad. I couldn’t get past those feelings. The story felt nostalgic and almost too much like every other book in the Chicagoland Vampire series. Anything new happening, growth or learning by the characters,  had been foreshadowed in other books and expected. So there weren’t really any surprises. The BIG things […]

Cara, Allie and Des Hudson adored their father Fritz but when he died, all of them questioned whether they really ever knew him. Allie and Des were his children from his marriage to late film star Honora Hudson but Cara was from his secret relationship with Susa Pratt who he married without divorcing his wife. Now their inheritance hinges on the restoration of Fritz’s hometown movie theater. The sisters have a year to pull it off and all of them must participate.   Two things attracted me to this story: Fritz’s secret family and the notion of three sisters in these circumstances forced to work together. I’ve experienced revelations of this type in my own family history and the dynamics of the sisters […]

The Cutter Cay series  so far has been about the three Cutter brothers. Now, we learn about Jonah, the previously unknown half-brother.  He actually had more of his parent’s time and attention growing up than the original brothers. But he hasn’t had the wealth or fame of the family.  I was very curious to learn more about him and how his newly found brothers would get along. Stormchaser is my favorite book so far. In addition to the suspense of the salvage projects, this one adds a historic sort of archaeological project, which to a great extent salvage is as well. There is deception in the crew (not completely unusual) and some high-tech or paranormal aspects of the project. As with the rest of the […]

It’s been almost a year since John Devlin walked away from Amelia Gray to see to his ailing grandfather and then cutoff all communication. Amelia is nursing a broken heart and has accepted a restoration assignment in Ascension, South Carolina to get her out of Charleston for a few months. One day while working in the Seven Gates Cemetery, she is “called” into the adjacent forest and discovers a circled of twelve mortsafes and sees a pair of hands gripping the grates. It’s the body of a young woman and it’s recent. Detective Lucien Kendrick is assigned to the case and he and Amelia have an immediate connection…one she’s not sure is kindred, lust or something else.   I’d never heard of a mortsafe […]

Excerpt   Quinn had taken the floor for exactly the reasons she’d said, in addition to the knowledge that however little she liked to think it mattered, Marcus was ten years older than she was. And he was a secret stress case who carried all his tension in his back and shoul- ders. She should know, since she’d nearly sprained her thumbs trying to dig the knots out during a massage that had started out sexy and turned into a to-the-death battle between Quinn and the long muscles lining Marcus’s spine. Marcus didn’t need to screw up his back by lying on the floor for eight hours, was her point. Not that she would ever say that to him. She didn’t have a death wish. […]

When beer and wine saleswoman Evelyn Benedict reluctantly agreed to allow brewery owner Austin Fitzgerald to do a ride-along with her to visit her territory, she had no idea how her life would be permanently altered. She’s from blue collar roots and he’s a trust fund baby but they fit almost perfectly. It’s the “almost” though that might just do them in. Especially when his best friend, Ross Hoffman enters the relationship.   Despite Evelyn’s childish reactions throughout the story, I really liked her. Those reactions were her coping mechanisms (scream and run), developed as a result of a tough childhood. She’s strong, smart and resourceful. I liked how she lived life in the moment, full out. Austin was equally intriguing, motivated to […]
