Top Five Elements of a Great Action Scene Thanks so much for hosting me today! As an urban fantasy junkie, the best part of reading and writing one are the fight scenes. Give me a death-defying, edge of your seat action scene and I’m a happy camper. There are lots of things that make a fight scene great and I do my best to deliver. Here are my top five most important elements for a kick-ass fight scene: Arrogance Confidence is important in any great fight scene. If the heroine goes into a fight doubting her ability to come out of it in one piece, the scene loses its momentum for me. When I think of an urban fantasy heroine, I think of Tiny Fey […]

Why Fighting is Sexy with Jeffe Kennedy

Why Fighting is Sexy with Jeffe Kennedy

Why Fighting is Sexy While I’m often on the side of Team Romp, I’m here to champion TEAM STOMP!!! Why? Because Ursula, my warrior princess and heir to the High Throne of The Twelve Kingdoms is a total badass. Points to support this: She sleeps with her sword, literally. Besides the sword that she’s never without, she always has multiple knives hidden on her person. She has shapeshifter blood, which makes her inhumanly fast and strong. Her spine of steel means she never backs down. Her iron will means she gets the job done. Her soft heart means she always protects her kingdoms and the ones she loves. So, how’s a guy to court a woman with so many sharp and deadly edges?? VERY carefully. […]

To write the stomp or to write the romp—that is the question with Chloe Neill

To write the stomp or to write the romp—that is the question with Chloe Neill

To write the stomp or to write the romp—that is the question. Urban fantasy usually involves both: action scenes that pit the protagonist(s) against one or more antagonists, and romantic scenes between the main characters, or even secondary characters. In my experience (and this is after writing 10 ¾ Chicagoland Vampires novels), writing action and romance scenes aren’t all that different, because they both involve similar mechanics: (1) emotional buildup; (2) increased pacing; and (3) physical entanglement. Both action and romance scenes are about taking the reader on an emotional journey, and they typically involve an emotional escalation.  For example, byplay or camaraderie may blossom into sensual tension, or angry words might bloom into physical violence.  Both types of scenes ultimately peak (pun very much intended!), whether in the […]

No one’s ever saved the universe with sex. Oh, sure, it’s fun to try, but you accomplish more with a gun in your hand than a… Well, I’ll let you complete that thought. I’ll just say I love the blood pumping, sweat breaking, endorphin raising effects of both, but the fight is more important than the sex. I know because I’m an expert at both. Who am I? My name is Ramie Ashdyn—“Ash” to my friends—and I am an anomaly. In short, that means I kick ass. Only about 1% of the people in the Known Universe are born with the random, unusual genetic sequence that makes us stronger, faster, and smarter than the average human. We’re able to endure more than the normal human, […]

Greetings! A big thanks to Jennifer for hosting me on her blog again. Thanks so much, Jen! So it’s time for the annual STOMP vs. ROMP smackdown. What side are you on? Fight scenes are one of my favorite things to write, so I am Team STOMP all the way. Whether I’m writing it or reading it or watching it, there’s just something about a good fight scene that really pulls me into the story and makes me root for the heroine to kick some bad-guy butt. Whenever I sit down to write one of my Elemental Assassin books, one of the first things I think about is the big fight scene at the end and how my assassin heroine Gin Blanco can use her wits […]
