The New Orleans Cajun Rage professional hockey team just won the Cup. No one thought they’d do it: they were a team of shoulda beens, never coulda beens and a star or two. They’d only been in the Crescent City for three years before this year’s Cinderella run that had them skating off the ice with the championship. Over the following summer, each player gets to keep the Cup for a day. Nobody knows why, but whoever has the Cup falls in love. USA Today Bestsellers Robin Covington, Kimberly Kincaid, Nana Malone and Virginia Nelson, Publisher’s Weekly Bestseller Angi Morgan, along with Xio Axelrod, Christi Barth, Andie J. Christopher, Avery Flynn, Kim Golden, Lena Hart, Desiree Holt, Robin Kaye, Katie Kenyhercz, Heather Long, Kate Meader, Susan Scott Shelley, and Misty D. Waters bring you 18 romances with smoking hot heroes—both on and off the ice.

Check My Heart by Christi Barth

Kurt Lundquist is at a crossroad now that he and his teammates have won the Cup. All of his focus was on winning that coveted prize as it was the promise he made to his 14-year old brother, Jasper, before he died. A chance encounter with Jasper’s hospice nurse, Lissette Broussard awakens him for the first time in almost a year. While it may have seemed ghoulish to some, these two were absolutely perfect for each other, both giving unselfishly (though Kurt had a definite anti-hero moment). I really loved their story as they healed the wounds caused by Jasper’s death around their joint planning for the celebration around Kurt’s Cup day that centered on his brother’s hockey team. Lissette went all in even though it meant leaving her heart exposed and Kurt’s generosity just warmed my heart. Lovely story with some elegant moments. The scene at the hockey ring for a date night was just fabulous (and oh so erotic).

Jamie “DC” Washington just capped a winning season with a win of the Cup for the Cajun Rage in New Orleans. Even more remarkable was that he did it after coming out…the first openly gay player. He’s using his day with the Cup to celebrate back in his hometown with the LGBT youth center he supports. On his way there, his seat mate is none other than the gorgeous Etienne Beaufort, the team’s PT who Jamie has secretly adored. They finally get to explore a relationship they’re both ready for. I loved Jamie for his courage, honesty and decency. Etienne was just perfect in this relationship as he hung out with Jamie for the day (and steamy night) and got this special man. Lots of complexity in this story, accomplished amazingly in such a short story.

Blade by Avery Flynn

3.5 Stars

Blade is a quick read about second chance romance between a hockey goalie, Flynn and retired theft turned jazz club owner, Gillie. Three years ago he broke her heart when he felt her after finding out about her thieving ways. Gillie’s club is in danger of closing down and she gets a call from an old friend from her cat burgling days to see if she wants to take one last job. She was quick to say no until she found out it was included a frame job on Flynn. One things leads to another and she finds herself face to face with the goalie that still owns her heart, but she doesn’t know that she still owns his. Avery Flynn writes a fun and sexy adventure on and off the ice for this couple.

Blade is part of the anthology so I thought that’s why I was missing some background on a few of the secondary characters then I see the note at the end of the story that the other characters are part of Avery’s B-Squad series. I really want to check that series out after reading this short story.

Finnegan (Finn) Donnelly is the first player for the Cajun Rage to have his Cup day and he decides to use it to return to his hometown for the first time in seven years. He visits the grave of his best friend from high school, Asher Gibson, a firefighter who died in the line of duty before Finn could apologize for having destroyed their friendship in one foolish moment. Finn also needs to repair his relationship with January Sinclair, the third member of their group who was at the center of that conflict and is now an administrator for the fire department’s Station Seventeen. What I loved about these two were their willingness to be vulnerable with each other after so much hurt and pain. They were both passionate people who were able to find their way pretty easily and enjoy their time together unabashedly. I liked how they rediscovered each other and it was fun, sexy and romantic. This was my first story by this author and it’s part of the Station Seventeen series, which I’m now going to read.

Dylan Royce is a former teen pop idol trying to transition into a serious rock musician. Between his manager and label, they’ve done a lousy job of making that happen. When Ariel Watson, his new publicist, takes over and he gets the chance to sub on tour for Riptide (a band he’s idolized forever), Dylan has a shot at being the musician he’s always wanted to be and the woman he’s adored from afar. There’s a lot to like about Dylan, especially considering he’d been ” handled” for so long. His situation made me think about all the young teen stars who struggle with similar transitions, being totally mismanaged in the process by recording labels. I loved his heart and selflessness. Ariel came […]

It was truly serendipity when recent college graduate Kylie Stafford learned her internship had fallen through, her boyfriend dumped her and she decided to do the wrong thing for awhile, all on the same day. Rock star Cam Watson just happened to be in her path when she made that decision and he changed everything.   Kylie’s infectious personality is a bit captivating and she’s smart, resourceful and fun to be around. Her decision to tour with Cam’s band for the next month might seem impulsive but it was the best match for her love life and career. Don’t let her age fool you into thinking this is a typical New Adult offering…no drama and angst here.   There are some very strong themes […]

Ward Cantrell and Piper Morrissey have a history we’ve been waiting to learn about. They were high school sweethearts and something happened to pull them apart twelve years ago. Since they were part of a unit of friends, they found a way to rebuild that aspect of their lives for the sake of the group. Now Ward, who’s never stopped loving Piper, is going to go all in to win back her heart.   I must admit when I discovered what Ward did to cause his breakup with Piper, I was ready to dump him myself and I was a big fan. He had a big hole to dig out of and he accomplished that in a big way. I also liked that […]

Quick summary Casey Hobbes is a state park forest ranger, pretty and only interested in casual relationships. When she rescues writer and professor Zane Buchanan after his poorly prepared dive into Lake Seneca, her resolve is shaken to her core. And, he thinks he’s stumbled onto the one. He’s not interested in casual so he sets out to win Casey with romance.   A bit of background Casey has a secret past that only a few people know about and a relationship with Zane poses a serious threat. He’s the one person who could expose her past and break her heart.   What I enjoyed The romance! Both were used to breezy encounters, fun but without emotional commitment. Zane astutely knew he had to approach […]

Quick summary Ella Mayhew is a massage therapist at her family’s hotel. She loves it and the town but not the family legacy that expects her to one day assume control. And, she’s just starting to recover from a tragedy that occurred three years ago. Enter Graydon Locke whose purpose is to covertly evaluate the Mayhew Manor Hotel for a corporate raider for which he’s the hitman. That is until he sees Ella for the first time and the feelings were definitely mutual.   What I liked The strength of the story lies in the writing. You’ve got “insta-lust” combined with a heroine who’s been propped up by her friends and a hero who is hiding a pretty destructive secret. This is normally a […]

This is a sequel to Love at High Tide.   Trina Trimble changes jobs/career paths almost as much as some people change hair styles. Her latest is as a private investigator and Brad Hudson, a Maryland State Police detective, reconnects with her at a strip club in Atlantic City. She’s undercover and he’s taking the vacation time he’d scheduled for his wedding/honeymoon before his fiancée dumped him.   I wasn’t crazy about Trina in the first book (she came off a bit like a flighty loose cannon) but she completely redeemed herself here. She’s smarter in this story and showed some skills, using her training and common sense. Trina and Brad were attracted to each other earlier but he was fresh off of his breakup. […]

This was a bittersweet story for me as it marks the end of a series I’ve very much enjoyed. Though it was short, it packed a lot in the final conclusion.   The setup Tabitha Bell is a matchmaker with an extraordinary family history (I’ll leave that for your discovery). She’s new to Aisle Bound and her services are a perfect fit for the wedding planning and romance business. Drew Watson is the creator of one of the most popular video games on the market. He’s just signed on with a company to help bring his current brainchild to retail shelves but the handsome, geeky nerd is flailing because of his social ineptness.   The issues When Drew literally runs into Tabitha on the streets […]
