Irony 101—The Spider herself snared in someone else’s web…

Another week, another few clues trickling in about the Circle, the mysterious group that supposedly runs the city’s underworld. Gathering intel on my hidden enemies is a painstaking process, but a more immediate mystery has popped up on my radar: a missing girl.

My search for the girl begins on the mean streets of Ashland, but with all the killers and crooks in this city, I’m not holding out much hope that she’s still alive.

A series of clues leads me down an increasingly dark, dangerous path, and I realize that the missing girl is really just the first thread in this web of evil. As an assassin, I’m used to facing down the worst of the worst, but nothing prepares me for this new, terrifying enemy—one who strikes from the shadows and is determined to make me the next victim.

I’m a big fan of Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series for many reasons.

  • Strong likable heroine
    • Really, what’s not to like about a heroine who kills the bad guys and is a great cook. Plus Gin is very loyal to her family and friends.
  • Scene stealing secondary characters
    • Gin is not the only character who is likable. Her gang of crime fighting friends and family brings more than just support to her life and the stories.
  • Great villains
    • Estep keeps cranking out fantastic bad guys.

Snared the sixteenth book in the series as all of the above. I don’t know who Estep has kept me coming back each time. I guess because I know I’m going to have a good time reading/listening to Gin’s adventures.

But as some of my buddies have pointed out in the past there are some repetitive issues. For the most part, they don’t bother me and I’ve come to see them as part of the series. The one that I could live without though is the one that caused me not to enjoy Snared as much as the previous books. Gin’s dreams.

Granted Gin had a traumatic childhood seeing her mother and sister killed so it’s only natural she would suppress some memories, but every (or at least most) installments Gin can’t remember why or how she knows someone “new” she meets only to later in the book have a dream that gives her the answers. I would think after having these dreams so often many of her memories would be triggered and remembered. At least we didn’t have the other plot device that has been used so many times where Fletcher left her a secret file on the current bad guy.

I think the element I liked the most about Snared was the addition of a serial killer as the villain. I cannot believe we’ve not had one before. I mean there as been some nasty villains in Gin’s past so it was nice to see a different type of murder. I also liked the information about Tucker. Now that we have taken a little side step from the Circle story arc I hope the next novel will bring us back and possibly wrap up it.

Nice Guys Bite by Jennifer Estep

Nice Guys Bite by Jennifer Estep

Silvio is a character to watch! Silvio has been growing on me as a part of Gin’s team. He can go toe to toe with Finn on the snarky one liners and putting away the food. Now after reading Nice Guys Bite we get to see that Silvio can hold his own when it comes to taking on the bad guys. He has some moves of his own, Gin would be proud of! I will definitely look at Silvio different after reading Nice Guys Bite. He’s not just a pencil pusher for Gin. I loved how the novella wrapped up and how Silvio feels like he is part of a family with the gang.     Giveaway! Jennifer Estep is giving away a $20 Amazon gift card.   […]

What can I say, Gin’s my girl! In Unraveled she shows the underbelly that there’s a new sheriff in town. I love that Unraveled has Philly in it! He’s a likable character like Finn and can deliver the snarky lines and is great to have for back up. Gin is working to figure how who is in the Circle, a super-secret group that we hear about in the previous book, Bitter Bite. While the plot for this installment starts out in Ashland, Gin, and her posse take a weekend vacation to Bullet Pointe. Bullet Pointe is a western theme park and hotel resort near Ashland and Finn got the deed to it from his dead mother. If you’re a fan of the series then you know that […]

Unwanted by Jennifer Estep

Unwanted by Jennifer Estep

If you’ve not read Bitter Bite there will be a mild spoiler.   Much like Owen needed to wrap up some things in his novella, Kiss of Venom, after Widow’s Web,  Finn needed to deal with the emotional fall-out of Bitter Bite in his own novella. Finn is alone for the most of Unwanted but it’s not because his friends aren’t around to help. He believes he deserves to be alone after mommy dearest almost killed him and a few of Gin’s group. Unwanted is how Finn feels after the bank robbery that killed many of his co-workers. They blame Finn for the deaths and so does he. Finn is no longer Mr. Popular at work and he would be ok with that if it wasn’t […]

Bright Blaze of Magic by Jennifer Estep

Bright Blaze of Magic by Jennifer Estep

If you ask Lila Merriweather how she spent her summer break, she would tell you that she became a team player, made some friends, has a new boyfriend, and helped take down some bad guys. You know the typical teenager’s summer. Bright Blaze of Magic was a nice wrap up of the Black Blade trilogy by Jennifer Estep.  Lila gets her closer from the past and a has bright looking future with the Sinclair family. Well done Estep! I like that Lila’s story was told in a trilogy, there was no unnecessary over-drawn drama that you get with some long running series. Estep gives you some fun characters, action, mystery and a little violence (I would have liked to see more blood and death but I’m […]

Audio Review: Bitter Bite by Jennifer Estep

Audio Review: Bitter Bite by Jennifer Estep

I received a print copy of Bitter Bite for review from Pocket but since I’ve not listened to a Gin adventure since book 7, Widow’s Web but mind you I have the whole series on audio because I love how Fortgang performances Estep’s writing especially her voice for Finn so I decided to wait for the audio. I loved slipping back into this world and characters via Fortgang’s delivery. **Series Spoiler Head** I was so excited at the end of the previous installment when it was apparent that we were going to get some long overdue details about a character I’ve been wondering about since the first book in the series, Spider’s Bite. Who is Finn’s mother? What happen to her? Was she and Fletcher married? […]

Dark Heart of Magic by Jennifer Estep

Jennifer Estep doing what she does best . . . writing strong and sassy heroines that have a taste for vengeance, justice and yummy food. Dark Heart of Magic takes place a couple of weeks after Cold Burn of Magic and Lila finds herself part of the Sinclair family. Which is really weird for her since she has lived on the streets for the last 4 years with only one friend, Mo. Now she’s living in a mansion with other people and pixies. There are rules to follow and people who care about her. But Lila tries her best to keep her distance since she plays on leaving when the year she agreed to stay is up. But there’s one person that Lila is having […]

Jennifer Estep Enlightens Us on How a Book is Edited

Posted October 21, 2015 by Jennifer in Author Guest Post | 11 Comments

Greetings! First of all, I want to say thanks to Jennifer for hosting me on her blog again. Thanks so much!   So today Jennifer asked me to talk a little bit about the book production process and what some of the various publishing terms mean. Revisions, line edits, copy edits, page proofs … it can get confusing when you hear an author talk about all these things. So here’s a rundown of what these terms mean and the general process that an author and her book goes through before you see the finished book on the shelves. I’ve included some examples of things that I’ve been asked on my various books, including Dark Heart of Magic, the second book in my Black Blade young […]
