What Natalie Wants for Christmas

Set up: So in All I Want for Christmas is You, eight year old Natalie makes an emergency phone call to the only father she has ever known after her mom leaves him because she’s having problems adjusting to being home from Iraq. But getting her parents in the same state is only half of the plan. Never underestimate the power of an 8 year old in getting what she wants for Christmas.

She knew something was wrong. She knew the minute Mommy had told her they were leaving and going to Maine for Christmas. She knew the minute Mommy said Daddy wasn’t coming with them.

So far, her plan was working. She’d watched enough Disney channel to know that you needed a plan. Part one had been getting Daddy to come to Maine. That much she’d accomplished.

Now she was in the backseat on the way to the Bangor Mall while Mommy and Daddy pretended she couldn’t hear them. She tried to focus on her letter to Santa. It was important. The most important thing she would ever write.

Dear Santa,

Thank you for bringing Mommy and Daddy home from the war. That’s all I ever really wanted last year.

Mommy had always told her to say thank you.

But this year, I’d like something different. It’s a small thing but it’s the only thing I want. I know you’ve probably heard this before but my life will probably be ruined if this doesn’t work.

Hopefully, a little dramatic flare would work here.

I want you to make Mommy and Daddy love each other again. I want them to love each other enough to stay a family.

She sniffed quietly, hoping her parents wouldn’t hear.

I want them to love me enough not to leave me again.

I’ll leave you lots of milk and cookies. Even though Mommy doesn’t eat gluten any more, I’ll leave you the good ones with big chocolate chips.

Sincerely

Natalie Egan

She folded it carefully and slipped it into her jacket. Now she just needed to give it to Santa.

An all new novella about a woman who came back from war changed and the man who loves her enough not to let her go.

All Major Patrick MacLean wanted was Christmas with the woman and child who were his family in everything but name. But Captain Samantha Egan has come back from the war a different woman than the one who left – and she doesn’t know if she can love him anymore.

But neither of them counted on the determination of a little girl they both call daughter and if Natalie has her wish, her parents may have no idea what’s coming for them. It’s going to take Christmas miracle to bring these two wounded warriors back from the edge of a broken heart.

About Jessica Scott

Jessica Scott is a career army officer, mother of two daughters, three cats and three dogs, wife to a career NCO and wrangler of all things stuffed and fluffy. She is a terrible cook and even worse housekeeper, but she’s a pretty good shot with her assigned weapon and someone liked some of the stuff she wrote. Somehow, her children are pretty well adjusted and her husband still loves her, despite burned water and a messy house.

She’s written for the New York Times At War Blog, PBS Point of View Regarding War, and IAVA. She deployed to Iraq in 2009 as part of OIF/New Dawn and is currently a company commander stationed at Fort Hood.

Most recently, she’s been featured as one of Esquire Magazine’s Americans of the Year for 2012.

Every time I think I understand the impact of multiple deployments on our military families, Jessica Scott presents me with something more. Captain Samantha (Sam) Egan returned from her recent deployment changed. Her way of coping with her war experience is to box all of her feelings up until she’s so numb she can’t feel anything anymore but her difference. Now Sam’s convinced she needs to leave Major Patrick MacLean, the man she’s been with for nine years and who’s the only father her daughter, Natalie, has ever known. You can’t help but empathize with both Sam and Patrick, who’s had two deployments of his own. It was also eye-opening to see how differently both handled similar issues though neither looked to each other to […]

Since the beginning of this series, I’ve watched the slow disintegration of Trent and Laura’s marriage. What’s made it even sadder is they’re both really good people. He’s admired by the troops under his command and she’s a vital part of the support infrastructure for the families waiting for their loved ones to return home from deployment. I couldn’t understand why Trent kept volunteering for deployment and distancing himself from his wife and family. This book not only answered that question but gave me insight into the travesties of war that I’d never considered. I’m the daughter of an Army NCO who served in Vietnam and now have a deeper understanding of what was really going on with him. Trent’s journey back to Laura was […]

I’ve looked forward to Reza’s story since the second book where his life seemed to completely fall apart and it was well worth the wait. The setup Reza Iaconelli is an incredible leader, preparing the men in his division for deployment and keeping them safe once at war. But when he’s not deployed, his excessive drinking is a problem. He’s taken it upon himself to self manage his sobriety but Reza’s private pain is sorely testing his resolve. When he crosses paths with Army psychiatrist Emily Lindbergh, his life changes overnight. The issues Reza’s used up all of his command’s goodwill and no one is going to come to his rescue anymore. He’s a loner and realistically can’t heal himself anymore. He’s near drowning but […]

Vic Carponti is an Army sergeant being deployed (again) to Iraq. As a military wife, Nicole is better prepared for this latest separation but it doesn’t mean it’s any easier. In fact, knowing the emotional toll makes their last days together bittersweet. His promise to return for Christmas is her lifeline and becomes Vic’s as well.   This prequel to the series gives us insight into Vic’s experience in Iraq before his injury. Because it’s his nature to always joke about any situation, Vic makes it easy for people to believe he’s not taking life seriously. He especially thinks it’s his life’s mission to keep Nicole laughing and he loves hearing her do it. It was so special to see what lies beneath […]

I love any excuse to revisit Shane and Jen and while this story is short, it satisfied my appetite. It was wonderful to see how they are as a couple since they transitioned from nurse and patient roles. It’s been a year and they have to face the reality of Jen’s cancer history and how it impacts their future. Shane’s no longer hesitant to express his love for her (and he does this in a big way) but he’s still the guy that has a tough time-sharing his fears. Jen’s need to live her life without cancer being the big shadow over it gets in the way of reality but they find their way together. It’s a short and lovely story, a nice interlude until […]

Captain Evan Loehr is a straight arrow West Point graduate and does everything by the book, and doesn’t have time for pleasure. He’s got some baggage from his youth that seems to be the driving force behind his current identity. Captain Claire Montoya earned her rank the hard way, first enlisting in the Army and then completing Officer Candidate School and moving into the officer corps. Claire has her secrets, too, and they have shaped her current behavior. She and Evan had one brief interlude years ago but since then seem to have butt heads at every juncture. Both end up in Colorado to train a team for deployment to Iraq, forcing them to confront their differences and passions for their careers and each other. […]

Sergeant First Class Shane Garrison is the consummate soldier. His first priority is keeping the men under his leadership alive. He meets Jen St. James, a nurse assigned to the same base in Fort Hood, Texas, the night before his deployment to Iraq and shares a single passionate kiss than neither of them can forget. Months later, Shane becomes injured in a near fatal attack and ends up in the hospital back home under Jen’s care. Jen is a breast cancer survivor and understands first hand the mental and physical struggle to recover. I loved both of these characters. Shane is an alpha male on steroids but what makes him so appealing is his absolute courage and commitment to the men assigned to him. This […]
