Hoarding all the knowledge of the world, the Great Library jealousy guards its secrets. But now a group of rebels poses a dangerous threat to its tyranny....

Jess Brightwell and his band of exiles have fled London, only to find themselves imprisoned in Philadelphia, a city led by those who would rather burn books than submit. But Jess and his friends have a bargaining chip: the knowledge to build a machine that will break the Library’s rule.

Their time is running out. To survive, they’ll have to choose to live or die as one, to take the fight to their enemies—and to save the very soul of the Great Library....

Ash and Quill is the third book in the Great Library series.  I started this journey thanks to Ace Roc stars. I choose to continue.  The world and the characters are familiar and dear. This is not a stand-alone; one needs to read the series in order. The knowledge of the situation builds as it goes along.

Tension filled me throughout this read. It’s exciting and interesting and uncertain. The suspense of what will happen is constant. It’s also frustrating, as each book ends after a particular situation,  but it’s still a sort of cliffhanger with not knowing if they will be safe or succeed on any of their goals. As with Paper and Fire, the ending throws our group into a new situation, so it gives me plenty of time to worry and freak out before the next book. You can read that review since I could repeat it here and it would be accurate for Ash and Quill. I expect the plot twists since almost nobody is honest and shares actual information.

Jess as our main guy, continues to grow and learn. He has very tough choices to make, uncomfortable ones. He has to mature and learn quickly to keep himself and his loved ones alive. Our brave group stays alive, but their physical and mental states take a beating.

There will be two more books in the series which can’t come fast enough. I feel it’s quite rude to want more when this one is just published, so I will practice patience. Since things are so unsettled, and they are dire, this would be a wonderful series to binge read. It’s all one story really.

Complex and well-written, The Great Library series could be reread and more details discovered each time. There are bits of humor and romance but this is fantasy, set in history with magic. Books are revered, as they should be. There is a war happening, both political and actual, with a David versus Goliath feel. I really loved getting to know these characters in Ink and Bone, and this continues. They are so important to me; I am so worried about them. The suspense is high with the threat of death constant. Young, smart and capable, Jess and his friends use their talents to the fullest. Their situation is treacherous. Allies are developed which works out …. sometimes. The allies may help, or die, […]

Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine

Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine

I was very excited to get Ink and Bone, the first in the new The Great Library series by Rachel Caine, She also wrote the Morganville Vampire series which I have enjoyed. I didn’t know what to expect from Ink and Bone, except that it would be about books and what could be more exciting, right? It was a slow start for me. Ink and Bone is set in a different time or the world has happened differently. The nuances of the world and the characters are interesting but it took a bit to settle in my mind. If you’re like me, first books sometimes are hard, since you have to get the setup organized in your head. But once that happened, I really enjoyed Ink and […]

Review: Terminated by Rachel Caine

Review: Terminated by Rachel Caine

While I enjoyed books 1 & 2 they were a bit slower but Caine saved all the real action for the finale. WOW. Just WOW! Terminated is a fast paced, non-stop adrenaline rush from page one to the last page. Bryn and the gang didn’t get a minute’s rest. Caine put Bryn through hell. From being blown up by an IED, hit by a semi truck, shot multi times, once in between the eyes and another in the heart by the man she loves to being burnt in a raging fire but it’s all in the life of Bryn 2.0. There’s even a part where Bryn guts herself in order to save herself and her friends.  Bryn is no longer the mild-mannered ex-military gal working […]

Audio Review: Two Weeks’ Notice by Rachel Caine

First Thought: Oh Snap! Bryn 2.0 is going to be very interesting. Issue(s) I Had: I don’t understand why the revived people are being called Returne addicts. Addicts are people who can (if they choose to) stop doing something like drinking or drugs. But the revived NEED the Returne drug or they die. It’s like calling me an oxygen addict. I don’t get it. The Story: Bryn is now working for the government in order to get her doses of Returne to stay “fresh”. But little does the government know, she has her own private supplier. The crazy ex-FBI mad scientist, Manny is trying to tweak Returne so that Bryn and the revived do not have to get their supply from the government. […]

Audio Review: Working Stiff by Rachel Caine

First Thought Not your “classic” zombies but still an interesting concept. Why I Listen I’ve had Working Stiff on my TBR since it’s release day and after listening to a sample of the audio, the narration sounded like one I would enjoy. And I was right. The story and narration both kept me entertain. Julia Whelan get a great job with the voices and timing of the narration. I’ve already purchased the next book on audio. The Story Bryn Davis has the worst first day on a job ever…. She dies and then comes back as a “zombie”. After serving in the military and dealing with dead bodies, Bryn thought she would be a good match in the position as the new funeral director at […]
