Jesse Warrick used to consider himself a kickass medic, but a teammate's brush with death has him questioning everything. Now he's been promoted to field commander of HORNET. How can he lead when he can't get his shit together? And how can he focus when the sexy new recruit makes him want to break the rules?

Lanie Delcambre can't seem to find solid footing within the elite hostage rescue team. Worse, the man she's loved for most of her life is now her boss. She'd kill to act on the chemistry between her and Jesse, but she can't risk ruining her career.

It was only supposed to be a training mission. No live ammo, no hostages, and no real bad guys—only someone didn't give the bad guys that memo. When their hotel is taken hostage with half of HORNET inside, Jesse and Lanie are the team's only hope of escaping alive…

Jesse Warwick is the HORNET Team medic who’s struggling with a lot of issues but mainly how to develop a relationship with his 15-year old troubled son, Connor, and how to cope with perceived medical failures in the field. Complicating his life even more is the new addition to the team, Lainie Delcambre, a woman who was part of his past and he can’t keep out of his mind and heart. She’s trying to fit in as the only female in the group.

This story took a while to get going as much time was spent developing these characters in the beginning, despite a great prologue. Though both were in earlier books in the series, Jesse and Lainie weren’t fleshed out much. It was worth the time spent though because when things got crazy, I felt like I knew them so well and could predict their actions. Jesse and Lainie were well suited despite their differences. I also liked how the issues related to her being the only female on the team were portrayed. It was honest without being indicting or whining.

Speaking of action, it was pretty nonstop once the setting shifted to Martinique. It was riveting, heartbreaking and chilling. There was nothing predictable about anything that happened from thereon out. I literally couldn’t stop reading. I’m used to the books in this series being suspenseful but this was so much more. It was breathtaking.

I love this series and really liked this book, even though there were parts that broke my heart. The ending promised at least one more story and that makes me happy.

About Tonya Burrows

Writing has always been my one true love. I knew since I was 6 years old that I wanted to be an author, but didn’t finish my first novel until 8th grade. It was an epic sci-fi/fantasy/mystery/romance mash-up and writing The End was one of the proudest moments of my young life.

I haven’t put down my pen since.

In college, after several false starts in more practical fields of study, I followed my heart and receive a B.A. in creative writing from SUNY Oswego. Now I’m working on a M.F.A. in popular fiction at Seton Hill University.

I spend most of my time writing, tinkering with my website, or reading. I love TV and movies and probably–okay, definitely–watch too much of both. Give me a good horror movie over a chick flick any day. (And, let’s be honest, I’ll take a bad horror movie too!) And if superheroes are involved, I’m so all over that. I’m a proud geek at heart and pledge my avid TV fandom to Supernatural and Doctor Who. I’m also a big fan of The Voice. What can I say? Guilty pleasure.

I share my life with my fur-babies: two dogs, Ella and Otto, and a ginormous cat named Nabisco. (Yes, like the cookie company. What? I told you I like my sweets, didn’t I? No? Well, now you know. Hi, I’m Tonya and I’m a junk food junkie.)

I’m from a small town in Western New York, but I love to travel. Some might even say I suffer from a bad case of wanderlust. I say I don’t suffer at all–I enjoy every second and I have a habit of moving someplace new every few years just to shake things up. Luckily, my animals are all excellent travel buddies.

Greer Wilde had to step up and raise his four brothers following the murder of his parents when he was 15-years old. He miraculously kept them together and started Wilde Security in an effort to continue providing a steady stream of income and maintain their connection. Now he’s in trouble. Greer’s been off the grid for over four months and he’s in bad shape emotionally and physically but is determined to find and kill his parents’ murderer. However, if his neighbor Natalie Taggart has anything to say about, that’s not going to happen.   This is the final book in the series and Greer is the toughest and most secretive of all the brothers. Unraveling his story was heartbreaking and there was much […]

We finally get to discover who Lark Warren really is and put the broody Vaughn Wilde out of his misery…maybe. They hooked up at his twin brother Cam’s wedding, spent a couple of intense weeks together and then she disappeared. When he looked into her background, Vaughn discovered she’d used several aliases before the current one but never found the first and real. A chance discovery in New Orleans puts them on a road trip together as he brings her back (unwillingly) to Washington, DC.   The fast pace of the story starts right away and never lets up! Lark, or Sage as she’s now called, doesn’t reveal herself easily and her layers are peeled back slowly over the course of the book. […]

Another “Wilde” Brother! Wilde at Heart by Tonya Burrows

Reece Wilde is the serious, practical one of the brothers so when he is inexplicably drawn to the unconventional, offbeat Shelby Bremer, even he questions his sanity. She’s also got a terrible reputation for secrecy and lying, one she admits to having earned.   It took me a while but somewhere during the story these two connected with me emotionally. There’s a lot going on and finding the convergences weren’t easy, especially with Shelby’s duplicity. But, I just couldn’t help liking her, with her tattoos, turquoise and purple hair and zest for life. I also liked that Reece loved the true Shelby and appreciated her uniqueness. Sister Eva comes off poorly here, taking off quite a bit of her shine.   I liked […]

Camden Wilde has loved his former partner, Homicide Detective Eva Cardoso, for five years but has been content to be her “best friend.” Now that he’s working with his brothers as an investigator, it might be time to make his move. But, she’s got idealized visions of marriage and he’s lived it and lost.   I really, really liked Cam…everything about him except for his reluctance to tell Eva the truth. While he had good reason to be fearful, he’s a tough guy and could handle it. I liked Eva, too, but her indecision about him and her former beau drove me nuts. When they were together, they WORKED! When they didn’t, it was awful.   I liked the whiff of suspense in the […]

Quick summary Former Navy SEAL Travis Quinn (now executive officer for HORNET) has suffered silently from debilitating migraines and blackouts, knowing that his condition will end his career if it becomes public. When he picks up a voice mail message from Mara Escareno, his one-night-stand that turned into a week-long fling weeks ago, he immediately boards a flight to El Paso…his version of a return call because he’s not been able to forget her. He arrives just as she’s obviously being abducted and the race is on.   A bit of background What Quinn doesn’t know is that the car accident that caused his head injury was no accident. He’s also lost his memory for that day and can’t recall something vital and the people […]

Quick summary DEA Agent Alex Brennan was undercover for a long while and then forced to take some time off after an unfortunate incident. He’s inexplicably drawn to the town of Three Churches, Maine and is confronted with some ghostly paranormal events. But, Alex doesn’t believe in these kinds of things, even when the attractive Pru Maddox tries to convince him otherwise. What I liked The story is fairly complex because there are multiple situations in play that are complicated separately and when considered as a whole. You know eventually there will be some connection but it’s pretty gnarly to unravel and piece together. Alex also formerly served in the Marines and members of his squadron play significant roles here. They have unique skills […]

No longer suitable for military duty, HORNET is his only chance to continue doing what he was trained to do but he’s hanging on by a thread. His teammates don’t trust his readiness but he’s determined to somehow persevere. Photojournalist Phoebe Leighton is on assignment in Afghanistan doing a documentary on the plight of young girls in the country when she stumbles upon an arms deal.
