Gwen Bailey has been busy taking care of everyone but herself. After a tragedy tore her family apart, she put her dreams aside to be with family. Now that her life is getting back on track, and her new Chocolaterie is open, she can concentrate on snagging the handsome, mysterious customer who has her dreaming about her own happily-ever-after...

Doctor Luke Thomson has spent the last five years filled with guilt. He hopes to make amends in Shadow Creek, however he doesn't count on falling for the adorable and gorgeous Gwen Bailey. He vows to not get involved with her, but she's too sweet to resist. It's only a matter of time, though, before the truth comes out. Luke knows there's no way Gwen will look at him the same way once she discovers his secret...

Gwen Bailey is feeling pretty good about herself for a change now that her family has emerged from the grief and despair brought about by the death of her brother and nephew five years ago. Her parents leaned heavily on her for support and now that her other brother has returned to town, it’s her turn to focus on her own happiness. And at the center of that focus is The Muffin Man, or TMM as he’s “confectionately” known as he comes into her chocolate shop every morning for his coffee and muffin. What she doesn’t know is he’s Dr. Luke Thomson and he’s keeping a secret that could potentially devastate her.

What’s not to like about Gwen? She’s a great friend, sister and daughter with the sunniest of dispositions. Her one failing, however, is her own self perception but she’s working on that, too. Luke has the same attraction towards her as she has for him but knows he can never begin a relationship because of that monster of a secret. Despite these issues, they both plod forward inelegantly but it all works. I loved how their relationship developed and it was a nice change of pace to see the guy have all the angst.

I was looking forward to this story and it lived up to my expectations. I adored Gwen and Luke clearly earned his redemption. The strong theme of family, conventional and otherwise, added wonderful foundations and layers to an already good story. There are equal amounts of heartbreaking and heartwarming moments, especially near the end. Here’s hoping we haven’t seen the last of Shadow Creek.

Excerpt

“I notice you. I notice everything about you. I know that this entire town loves you. I know you sneak a chocolate muffin in the morning and eat it bit by bit while you’re serving customers. I know you only charge that old guy with the beard half the actual price of his breakfast order. I know you hate tea even though you pretend to know what you’re talking about when customers ask you your favorite. I know you hate wearing mascara. I know that for some reason you used to wear baggy boring clothes and all of a sudden this week you’ve started dressing in color, in clothes that show off an incredible body. And I know that I’ve wanted to kiss you since the first day I met you. I think you’re incredibly hot and sexy and I didn’t want you to go home with some random guy tonight. I wanted you to go home with me.”
He lowered his head and finally took her mouth against his, kissing her, wrapping her up close. She molded herself to him, full curves pressed against his body, setting him on re. He knew that kissing Gwen would be pretty awesome, but he hadn’t expected just how good. She t against him like no other woman had ever. She kissed him back, making little sounds that were driving him insane, and he knew that this wasn’t going to be enough.

Five years ago, Jack Bailey left his fiancée, Lily Cookson, and his family following the tragic deaths of his twin brother and nephew. He returns at Christmas for the first time, determined to win back Lily’s heart as well as his family’s respect. On New Years Eve, he and Lily have their first confrontation and it’s life changing.   Jack’s reasons for leaving were understandable but staying away so long was harder to reconcile. I liked that the issues weren’t so easy to resolve nor clear cut. Both Lily and Jack had secrets and emotional baggage that gets slowly revealed throughout the story, adding layers to the topics and the characters. That the two still love each other is never a question but […]

Julia Bailey left Shadow Creek five years ago following tragic circumstances. She’s returning for the holidays for the first time since she left and her emotions are running strong. Chase Donovan was her rock when she needed him and now he’s ready for a much deeper relationship.   This was sweet on the surface but, typical of a Victoria James story, some very tough issues roiled beneath. I loved the idyllic Christmas setting and how it juxtaposed against both Julia’s and Chase’s personal circumstances. His seven-year old daughter added comic relief and some very poignant moments.   It’s a lovely story with a real emotional punch of both kinds. I’m looking forward to more stories in this series.

Natalia Puccini is the successful owner of her family’s bakery. If only she wasn’t so lousy with her relationships, especially the two that cheated on her. The most recent is now engaged to her traitorous cousin and Natalia has to do the family thing and serve as the brat’s maid of honor. As if things couldn’t get worse, her first love, Aiden McCann, is back in town after a ten-year absence.   This was a sweet story but tackled some pretty heavy themes…alcoholism, cancer, infidelity, trust, redemption…just to name a few. Aiden’s absence had much more to do with his awful relationship with his father but the impact was the same. I enjoyed how their struggle to come to terms with the old […]

Bakery manager Alexandra (Alex) McAllister’s perfect life is now spinning out of control. She learns, on the same day, that the owners of the bakery need to sell now instead of five years from now when she can afford to buy the business and a man claiming to be her adopted daughter’s biological father is coming to claim her. Hayden Brooks just learned that his one-night stand may have produced a child and he’s ready to take responsibility.   This was a sweet story tinged with a little heartbreak. I admired Alex for having created a lovely family after a truly sad start in life. Her story brought me to tears and her generosity towards Hayden, tepid as it might have been, in […]

High school teacher Kate Abbott is living her dream. With her two sisters and their adopted daughters, she finally has created a whole new family and doesn’t need a man in her life. That’s until she meets Matt Lane, a sexy but sensitive former police detective now private investigator. But, it’s the police connection that spooks her and he’s determined to find out why.   I liked the story, the characters and the romance for the most part but felt like Matt did all the work with minimal returns from Kate. It also didn’t work for me that her underlying issues weren’t revealed until nearly 80% into the book. It was too drawn out without any hint of what may have happened to her, […]

My initial thoughts I started this book not really knowing what to expect but felt this would be a fairly light-hearted story. But, with what I knew of these two characters from the first book, I couldn’t imagine them being “frothy.” My instincts were correct as both Claire and Jake had depth and complexity, making this an outstanding story.   quick summary Claire’s silent crush on Jake dated back to high school. He being six years older, Jake never gave her the time of day. When they came together many years later, the night of his brother and Claire’s best friend’s wedding, little did they know it would have such a lasting effect.   What I loved about this story What’s beautiful about […]
