The emotional and unforgettable new romance from the New York Times bestselling author of the On Dublin Street series.

Alexa Holland’s father was her hero—until her shocking discovery that her mother and she weren’t his only family. Ever since, Alexa has worked to turn her life in a different direction and forge her own identity outside of his terrible secrets. But when she meets a man who’s as damaged by her father’s mistakes as she is, Alexa must help him.

Caine Carraway wants nothing to do with Alexa’s efforts at redemption, but it’s not so easy to push her away. Determined to make her hate him, he brings her to the edge of her patience and waits for her to walk away. But his actions only draw them together and, despite the odds, they begin an intense and explosive affair.

Only Caine knows he can never be the white knight that Alexa has always longed for. And when they’re on the precipice of danger, he finds he’ll do anything to protect either one of them from being hurt again....

Quick summary

Alexa Holland, photographer’s assistant, has a meltdown on a shoot when she discovers the subject for the day is none other than Caine Carraway, investment management wonderboy and the man her family almost destroyed years ago. When he discovers who she is, he strikes back and tough.

The secrets

There are quite a lot of them in this story, which only made it more interesting as they unfolded gradually, adding layers to the characters and providing intrigue.

The romance

Caine and Alexa make an unlikely couple, until she gets under his skin. Her attempts at destroying his “walls” were admirable and I really liked her spirit. Each time he disappointed her, though, I felt her despair. There were times I wanted her to just run in the opposite direction but once I learned his history, it had me hang in there with him.

The narration

I liked the narrator as she clearly injected the emotion and angst of Alexa throughout the story. There were times, however, that she just projected immaturity, especially when Alexa was being snarky. Otherwise, I enjoyed the performance.

The bottom line

This is a well-told, fast-paced story with interesting characters and a pretty compelling romance. And, there was a bit of intrigue and suspense that cropped up about midway through the book. The ending came too soon for me as I wasn’t ready to let these people go. Just wish this was the beginning of a series (like I need another one!).

About Samantha Young

I’m a 28 year old contemporary and paranormal romance author with 21 titles to my name so far. I love anything that allows me to be creative which means I love my family a whole heck of a lot. They’ve put up with my stories, a number of forced bedroom redecorations, singing, artwork, messy art supplies, a failed attempt at learning guitar, whiny emo music, two house moves (and redecoration) that they should have let me get on with myself but are far too nice to have done so, and a level of sarcasm they only have themselves to blame for since they raised me that way …

As a young girl I never imagined in a million years I’d get to spend my hours day dreaming up stories for myself and other people to enjoy. Much to my delight and amazement there are readers out there who can relate to my dry humour, my mad worlds, and all my heroes and heroines who sometimes do the saving and sometimes just need to be saved. Moreover readers seem to love my home country as much as I do. If I didn’t already love my readers for supporting me, I’d love them for loving Scotland. I’m quite attached to the place.

I find my inspiration in many places but one of the most important is in the world of music. Artists such as The Killers, Amy Macdonald, Biffy Clyro, Birdy, MS MR, The Airborne Toxic Event, Alex Winston, Florence + the Machine, Imagine Dragons, Carolina liar, Arcade Fire, Bastille, The Black Keys, Ingrid Michaelson, Paolo Nutini, Metric, The Naked & the Famous, The National, We Are Scientists, White Lies, The Steeldrivers, Olin & the Moon, The Rumour Said Fire, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Pink, Lana Del Ray, Mumford & Sons, Matchbox Twenty, The Lumineers, La Rocca, Butterfly Boucher and many more inspire the heck out of me.
