Come one, come all! The Carniepunk Midway promises you every thrill and chill a traveling carnival can provide. But fear not! Urban fantasy’s biggest stars are here to guide you through this strange and dangerous world. . . .
RACHEL CAINE’s vampires aren’t child’s play, as a naïve teen discovers when her heart leads her far, far astray in “The Cold Girl.” With “Parlor Tricks,” JENNIFER ESTEP pits Gin Blanco, the Elemental Assassin, against the Wheel of Death and some dangerously creepy clowns. SEANAN McGUIRE narrates a poignant, ethereal tale of a mysterious carnival that returns to a dangerous town after twenty years in “Daughter of the Midway, the Mermaid, and the Open, Lonely Sea.” KEVIN HEARNE’s Iron Druid and his wisecracking Irish wolfhound discover in “The Demon Barker of Wheat Street” that the impossibly wholesome sounding Kansas Wheat Festival is actually not a healthy place to hang out. With an eerie, unpredictable twist, ROB THURMAN reveals the fate of a psychopath stalking two young carnies in “Painted Love.”
Carniepunk is an anthology with a star-studded urban fantasy author list. Each story is around 30-40 pages each. Some darker and mentally off than others. Some are part of the author’s series while others are stand alone shorts.
If you can’t tell by the title of the book all the stories have some kind of a connection to a carnival.
Since these are short stories I’m just going to give a my quick thoughts on the story.
Delilah S. Dawson “The Three Lives of Lydia” B+
A wonderful short in true Blud world fashion. Creeply entertaining.
Mark Henry “The Sweeter the Juice” B+
Horribly good. It’s dark, twisted and sickly funny. We follow a Transgender (pre-op male to female) who is looking to take the final step in his/her gender reassignment surgery during all things… a zombie apocalypse.
Jaye Wells “The Werewife” B+
Brings new meaning to “that time of the month”. And be careful what you wish for. Wow what a way to find out that you are stuck in an unhappy married.
Rachel Caine “The Cold Girl” A+
Young love in a small town goes wrong when a girl finds out that her boyfriend has a nasty hobby. This story was well written and very chilling.
Jennifer Estep “Parlor Tricks” A
Elemental Assassin short story. Just what you would imagine a trip to the carnival would be like with Gin.
Kelly Meding “Freak House” A+
Meding weaves an interesting tale with mythology I hope to see more of from her.
There are other stories by various authors but these are the ones I listened to since I was already familiar with the authors. I plan to go back and listen to the other stories at some point as I have the remaining authors on my TBR pile.
Looking for dark and entertaining stories to thrill and amaze you? Step up one and all, Urban Fantasy fans are sure to enjoy the dark and twisted stories from some great authors in the genre.
The anthology is narrated by two narrators, Candace Thaxton and Kirby Heyborne. I enjoyed both narrators. Both did great jobs with both male and female voices which is one of my biggest pets peeves. Their pacing and emotional changes in their voice was spot on. I would like to hear more of both the narrators’ work.
