Pirriwee Public's annual school Trivia Night has ended in a shocking riot. One parent is dead. The school principal is horrified. As police investigate what appears to have been a tragic accident, signs begin to indicate that this devastating death might have been cold-blooded murder.
In this thought-provoking novel, number-one New York Times bestselling author Liane Moriarty deftly explores the reality of parenting and playground politics, ex-husbands and ex-wives, and fractured families. And in her pitch-perfect way, she shows us the truth about what really goes on behind closed suburban doors.
It’s the annual Trivia Night at Pirriwee Public school and the evening ends in a disaster. One parent is dead and a number of others are injured. As the attendants are interviewed by police and journalists, the story rewinds to six months earlier to what might have been a catalyst event that begins with a big little lie.
Caroline Lee’s audio performance was pitch perfect with the story. Her nuanced delivery made a huge difference in my ability to capture the subtleties of the characters. As the story is set in Australia, Lee’s authentic accent helped ground me in the region.
This is a brilliantly written story that uses humor and ordinary people to impart some extraordinary themes (domestic abuse, “helicopter” parenting, sexual abuse, bullying). What first appears to be some fairly petty actions and behaviors by parents of children in a kindergarten class spirals outward to exacerbate fears, insecurities and judgments. It is also juxtaposed with the innocence of the children involved who, at times, emulate the adults around them with sometimes surprising results. I was completely engaged and found this to be a thought provoking story.
