The murder of two members of the Capitol Cleaning Service might’ve been just another homicide investigation—that is if one of them hadn’t been romantically involved with a married senator from Arizona. Lt. Sam Holland and her team are plunged into another complex case that at first seems open and shut. But as Sam tugs on the threads of the investigation she uncovers a deep, dark Washington secret that threatens the careers of some of the government’s highest-ranking officials. Racing to catch a killer before he can strike again, Sam and her fiancé, U.S. Senator Nick Cappuano, attempt to plan a wedding while her colleague Detective Tommy “Gonzo” Gonzales faces life-changing news.
I keep waiting for this series to lose momentum, become a little less interesting but it’s just not going to happen. I even switched to the audiobook format and found one more reason to love the books. Everything about it seems to work, striking that perfect pitch between the suspense and romance.
D.C. Detective Samantha (Sam) Holland and U.S. Senator Nick Cappuano (VA) are fresh from their romantic engagement when he gets a desperate call from Arizona Senator Henry Lightfeather, a good friend. A young woman has been brutally murdered and Lightfeather’s in the thick of it. Sam’s stuck with yet another case that tests the boundaries of their professional careers.
This case has political intrigue mixed with plain old thuggery that takes some interesting paths. It was suspenseful and masterfully woven into the personal lives of not only Sam and Nick but the recurring supporting characters. There’s a particularly tough situation involving another detective in Sam’s squad that will test your resolve. It’s not a tough case to figure out but it wasn’t all that easy to unravel, either.
I’m in love with Sam and Nick’s relationship. She’s learning how to be part of a couple and Nick’s holding her feet to the fire. Just when you think he’s too good to be true he goes and does something completely human. They remind me somewhat of Eve Dallas and Roarke’s relationship (In Death series) but have their own unique identity. Their romance is the strength of the series.
Eva Kaminksy’s performance was wonderful. I particularly enjoyed how she conveyed tension without being overly dramatic about it. Her voice really worked for me and her male characterizations were very well done.
The bottom line
Like I need another series to be addicted to!!! Thankfully I’ll be able to catch up quickly (there are currently a total of 7 books and a novella released) and I have the next book already in the queue. This book is strong on mystery and suspense, couched neatly in a really great romance. The development of the secondary characters was also outstanding and I enjoyed their stories as much as Sam and Nick’s. I couldn’t stop listening to this book and finished over a 24-hour period. (Yes, I went to bed with my headphones on.) The books aren’t standalone so start with the first book, Fatal Affair. You’ll thank me later.
