The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie?
Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do.
You’d like to get to know Grace better. But it’s difficult, because you realise Jack and Grace are never apart.
Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.
Grace Harrington thinks she’s met her dream man when Jack Angel shows up at a park and entertains her young sister who has Down’s Syndrome. Who she’s really met is the devil with a beautiful veneer. It’s only after she’s married him that the mask comes off and her life becomes a living nightmare.
I became more incensed with every page and found it as difficult to stop listening as it was to keep going. Grace was in quite the predicament and I kept hoping she’d find her way out of this and give Jack his due. There was a point, however, where things got repetitive but fortunately it shifted soon enough. Also, I had to suspend belief a couple of times but the gist of the story was well taken.
The narrator delivered an excellent performance as she told this story with just the right distinctions. The pacing of the writing was a little slow but overall I enjoyed the book. The ending was my favorite as it seemed perfect for the circumstances. That’s all I’ll say without spoiling the experience for others. I’d definitely read another book by this author.
