Choose the one guy you can’t have . . .

As captain of a San Francisco Bay tour boat, Pru can handle rough seas—the hard part is life on dry land. Pru loves her new apartment and her neighbors; problem is, she’s in danger of stumbling into love with Mr. Right for Anybody But Her.

Fall for him—hard . . .

Pub owner Finn O’Riley is six-foot-plus of hard-working hottie who always makes time for his friends. When Pru becomes one of them, she discovers how amazing it feels to be on the receiving end of that deep green gaze. But when a freak accident involving darts (don’t ask) leads to shirtless first aid, things rush way past the friend zone. Fast.

And then tell him the truth.

Pru only wants Finn to be happy; it’s what she wishes for at the historic fountain that’s supposed to grant her heart’s desire. But wanting him for herself is a different story—because Pru’s been keeping a secret that could change everything. . . .

I’m all about Jill Shalvis, so when I saw she had a new series coming out I knew I was going to read it. But when the opportunity came to listen to Sweet Little Lies narrated by Karen White, I figured, Why Not? I’ve loved the author and narrator pairing in the past with Shalvis’ Animal Magnetism series.

I have a history of not falling in love with the first couple in a series. I don’t know why, but it seems like the couples that follow have better storylines and/or chemistry. For me, Pru and Finn fell into that first couple syndrome. They were likable but not lovable. I think (for me) what kept them from reaching the lovable status was the “big secret” Pru was keeping from Finn and everyone else. It was the reason she wouldn’t let herself fall for Finn.

All romances have that one thing that keeps the couple from getting together or the story wouldn’t last long. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, the end. Pretty boring. Sometimes the “drama” element is believable or over the top and if we are lucky it’s somewhere in the middle, making for a great conflict giving the readers a satisfying ending when the couple gets their HEA.

After I finished Pru and Finn’s story, I didn’t have that satisfaction.  What I was left feelings was ‘I want more of the secondary characters’, because I enjoyed them more than the leads. Like I said before, I feel this way with most of the series I read. So I don’t blame Jill’s writing or Karen’s narration. It’s just my thing, I rarely read the first book of a series and think OH MY GOD this is the best book ever.

Sweet Little Lies might not have hit the WOW factor for me, but it is still Jill Shalvis! Which means you’re going to get laughs and fun with your sexy times. I’m used to Shalvis’ small town setting with her other series but even though Sweet Little Lies is set in San Francisco it still has a small town feel to it. I think the big reason is the cast of characters is small and close-knit.

Sweet Little Lies was an enjoyable listen and Shalvis fans no doubt will want to pick up a copy. I’ve already added the next two books The Trouble with Mistletoe and Accidentally on Purpose in the series to my TBR shelf on Goodreads and I can’t wait to see where Shalvis takes us with the next couples.

Karen White delivered another noteworthy performance with Sweet Little Lies. Karen does a fine job with the pacing of the story, delivers the characters with distinctions and adding just the right inflections and tones where they are needed.

Fans of Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breeds series will enjoy the vampire mythology in Fated by Rebecca Zanetti. The vampires are all born not made and they’re all male. They need female humans to mate with. Instead of the women having a Breed Mate mark, the vampires get a mark on them once they’ve touched their fated female and once the couple mates the woman is also marked. Once the mating takes place no other vampire male can touch the woman without displeasure. Also like the Breed Mates in Adrian’s series, the women have special abilities. Cara is an empath with a young daughter, Janie that is psychic. And there’s two groups of vampires. The good ones like Talen and the bad ones, Kurjans. The Kurjans can’t […]

About the series While the author doesn’t include this book in the FBI/US Attorney series (neither of the main characters is an FBI agent or a US attorney), it is connected through several of the characters. Ford Dixon and his best friend, Brooke Parker, were featured in Love, Irresistibly. The story stands alone very well. However, if you’re as manic as I am about character continuity, consider this as #6 in the series sequence.   Quick summary Ford Dixon is an investigative journalist who’s out with his friends one evening. Victoria Slade (a divorce attorney) and her friends are out on the same evening at the same restaurant. While they share a “look” and a “connection,” forces work against them and they don’t meet or […]

Joint Review of Total Surrender by Rebecca Zanetti

Piper and Jory? Jonetta: I thought she had a great sense of humor and he really was a badass. They were great together, especially when she was debating whether to trust him or not. Jennifer: I thought Piper was great for Jory. She helped bring out his emotions and helped him have a little fun in a dark world.   Who’s your daddy? Jonetta: Didn’t see that coming either! Probably my biggest WTH moment in the story. I had to rewind and listen again. Jennifer: I liked the reveal. After all one Dean brother falls for the bitch’s daughter. It was only fighting that this love connection happened.   There’s a new crazy in town Jonetta: Like the Commander and his crew weren’t crazy enough? The Protect group may be worse […]

I’ve Got a Secret Jonetta: Audrey can’t tell Nate she’s on his side because she wants to protect him. Puh-leeze! He’s a killing machine!! Glad this didn’t last too long. Jennifer: I agree but really she loves him and wants to protect him. But yeah he’s a stone-cold killer when he needs to be. Money and Politics Jonetta: Loved this combo for the story. I knew we could expect dirty dealing, backstabbing and somebody getting knocked off. Jennifer: Most of the twists I saw coming but they were still written well and I really thought I knew who Audrey’s dad was going to be but at last I was wrong. Unless it was another lie… Mother of the Year! Jennifer: Geez, Audrey’s mom is a cold-hearted […]

Getting the Crush. Rumor Has It by Jill Shalvis

I LOVE it when the girl gets the guy she’s had a big crush on. Love it! And Jill Shalvis writes this romance trope well! What do you get when you take a 2nd grade teacher and an ex-Special Ops soldier and put them together? A hot (not sweet!) romance in RUMOR HAS IT.  Everyone in Sunshine calls Kate sweet and it drives her nuts when Griffin, who happens to be her BFF’s big brother and her all time crush, calls her sweet. She doesn’t want Griffin to see her as sweet because if he does then nothing will happen between them. Griffin is a known bad boy when it comes to the ladies and after Kate has spent the last few years taking care […]

The Dean Brothers are Back in Sweet Revenge by Rebecca Zanetti

Jennifer and I are both weighing in on this story. I read it and she listened to it so you’ll get more than just two story perspectives.   Quick summary The story continues, this time with the eldest of the Dean brothers. Matt arrives in Charmed, Idaho, following a lead that points to this town where he might find one of the doctors who knows the key to disarming the chip imbedded in him and his brothers. Laney Jacobs owns and operates a bar there and takes him in and gives him shelter and a job. They are terribly attracted to each other but aren’t being completely honest about their pasts and agendas. The mystery and suspense Jonetta: One of the highlights is the mystery and […]
