Irony 101—The Spider herself snared in someone else’s web…

Another week, another few clues trickling in about the Circle, the mysterious group that supposedly runs the city’s underworld. Gathering intel on my hidden enemies is a painstaking process, but a more immediate mystery has popped up on my radar: a missing girl.

My search for the girl begins on the mean streets of Ashland, but with all the killers and crooks in this city, I’m not holding out much hope that she’s still alive.

A series of clues leads me down an increasingly dark, dangerous path, and I realize that the missing girl is really just the first thread in this web of evil. As an assassin, I’m used to facing down the worst of the worst, but nothing prepares me for this new, terrifying enemy—one who strikes from the shadows and is determined to make me the next victim.

I’m a big fan of Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series for many reasons.

  • Strong likable heroine
    • Really, what’s not to like about a heroine who kills the bad guys and is a great cook. Plus Gin is very loyal to her family and friends.
  • Scene stealing secondary characters
    • Gin is not the only character who is likable. Her gang of crime fighting friends and family brings more than just support to her life and the stories.
  • Great villains
    • Estep keeps cranking out fantastic bad guys.

Snared the sixteenth book in the series as all of the above. I don’t know who Estep has kept me coming back each time. I guess because I know I’m going to have a good time reading/listening to Gin’s adventures.

But as some of my buddies have pointed out in the past there are some repetitive issues. For the most part, they don’t bother me and I’ve come to see them as part of the series. The one that I could live without though is the one that caused me not to enjoy Snared as much as the previous books. Gin’s dreams.

Granted Gin had a traumatic childhood seeing her mother and sister killed so it’s only natural she would suppress some memories, but every (or at least most) installments Gin can’t remember why or how she knows someone “new” she meets only to later in the book have a dream that gives her the answers. I would think after having these dreams so often many of her memories would be triggered and remembered. At least we didn’t have the other plot device that has been used so many times where Fletcher left her a secret file on the current bad guy.

I think the element I liked the most about Snared was the addition of a serial killer as the villain. I cannot believe we’ve not had one before. I mean there as been some nasty villains in Gin’s past so it was nice to see a different type of murder. I also liked the information about Tucker. Now that we have taken a little side step from the Circle story arc I hope the next novel will bring us back and possibly wrap up it.

Audio Review: Bitter Bite by Jennifer Estep

I received a print copy of Bitter Bite for review from Pocket but since I’ve not listened to a Gin adventure since book 7, Widow’s Web but mind you I have the whole series on audio because I love how Fortgang performances Estep’s writing especially her voice for Finn so I decided to wait for the audio. I loved slipping back into this world and characters via Fortgang’s delivery. **Series Spoiler Head** I was so excited at the end of the previous installment when it was apparent that we were going to get some long overdue details about a character I’ve been wondering about since the first book in the series, Spider’s Bite. Who is Finn’s mother? What happen to her? Was she and Fletcher married? […]

Read It, Track It – Taken With You by Shannon Stacey

Read It, Track It  is a  way for me to track books for my reading challenges and they will be super short. You don’t have to be a Kowalski to get your HEA. TAKEN WITH YOU is a fun romance where opposites attract. Ok I cheated a bit on this TBR Jar read. I waited and waited for  TAKEN WITH YOU to be released on audiobook because I love Lauren Fortgang’s narration of the series. But after waiting for so long I bought the ebook for my Nook. Then I was contacted by Fortgang to review the audio. I jumped at listening! Lauren brings Hailey and Matt’s story to life with her narration. Her pacing and tones are spot on for Shannon Stacey’s characters […]

Twisting Plot with Great Heroine. Dark Hope by H.D. Smith

First Thought Lauren Fortgang is the narrator? Hell yeah sign me up! What I liked Dark Hope started out as a kind of light UF story that turned into a complex story that had me wondering where the roller coaster was going to stop. I liked the fact that I couldn’t easily figure the plot out by chapter 5 like other books I’ve read. Dark Hope is an audio you need to listen carefully to because you can find yourself lost if you check out from time to time. A lot of plot twists happen. What Didn’t Quite Work For Me I actually took a break with only 2 hours left in the audio because I was as lost and pissed as Claire and just wanted […]

This is book 7 in a series so expect a few series spoilers below.  I’ve been waiting for Liz and Drew’s story since they hooked up at Mitch’s wedding in book 4, All He Ever Needed. Liz is the only girl in the Kowalski Family and she’s been living away from home for about 15 years. She moved across country from the family’s home, Northern Star Lodge in Maine to New Mexico with her loser of an “artist” boyfriend that none of her brothers liked. After Liz returned home for Mitch’s wedding she saw that her brothers and cousins were moving forward in their lives with weddings and babies and she got home sick. She already gave the boyfriend the boot but instead of staying […]

Audio Review: All He Ever Desired by Shannon Stacey

As always the writing and narration team of Shannon Stacey and Lauren Fortgang is a winner! I’m really enjoying the Kowalski family. This time around we get’s Ryan’s story. He’s been avoiding going into town when he’s home and his family thinks they know the reason… Lauren Carpenter. Lauren married Ryan’s best friend right out of high school after they found out she was pregnant which made things for Ryan hard since he was in love with her. So he left town to go to college and start his business. 15 years later the two are now divorced from other people and the attraction is still there but they are pretty much strangers now since they’ve not spoken in all this time. Lauren has it tough as […]

Audio Review: Yours to Keep by Shannon Stacey

First Impression: I’ve found a new author and series to add to my auto buy list. Favorite Line/Quote: “Oh yes, Sean Kowalski. Your amazing kisses have made all rational thought fly out of my besotted brain. If only you could fill me with your magic penis, I know we’ll fall madly in love and live happily ever after.” The Narration: I love Lauren Fortgang’s narration of the Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep so I wanted to check out some more of her work. I listened to books 1 & 2 in the Kowalski Family and loved the narration and writing so it was a no brainer for me to listen to this one too. What I liked: Everything really. Shannon Stacey knows how to write […]

Audio Review: Widow’s Web by Jennifer Estep

Oh where to begin? Well first if you follow me you know that all the books in this series have been 5 stars and favorites for me. Well kiddies, Widow’s Web is still a favorite and I still have my Gollum moments (My Precious) but I could only give it 4 stars. Why? One word, or rather name…OWEN. Owen you broke my heart in this one. I knew you were too perfect. But I have hopes that you pull you head out of your ass in the future. But I’ll back up a bit and leave Owen where he belongs…bitch slapped and tie up somewhere. For now. I love how Widow’s Web starts. Gin has been planning an assassination for weeks on her current targets and you […]
