With a killer on the loose, it's the worst time to be on lockdown ...

It's just another day at the office for Washington Metro Police lieutenant Sam Holland when a body surfaces off the shores of the Anacostia River. But before Sam can sink her teeth into the new case, Secret Service agents seize her from the crime scene. A threat has been made against her family, but nobody will tell her anything--including the whereabouts of her husband, Vice President Nick Cappuano.

This isn't the first time the couple's lives have been at risk, but when a bombshell from Sam's past returns to haunt her, she can't help but wonder if there's a connection. With a ruthless killer out for vengeance, and Nick struggling to maintain his reputation after secrets from his own past are revealed, Sam works to tie the threat to a murder that can't possibly be a coincidence. And she has to get it done before her husband's career is irrevocably damaged...

BONUS SHORT STORY: Bringing Noah Home

Homicide Lieutenant Samantha (Sam) Holland and her partner Freddie Cruz are called to a scene where a body was found on the banks of the Anacostia River. As they begin their investigation, agents suddenly show up, surround Sam and whisk her away without explanation. A serious and credible threat was received against the Vice President’s family and that means more than just Sam and son, Scotty.

This was a solidly interesting case that went in some strange directions. I liked that the resolution came about through dogged police procedurals involving the entire team. It was engaging and allowed me to follow the case and make my own deductions that turned out to be on target. That works for me in a mystery.

My biggest issue continues to be with Sam operating without a net when she’s the Second Lady. I just can’t suspend reality enough to swallow her not having protection. Here I felt she was particularly stubborn and unreasonable and it threw me out of the story. It’s the reason why I dropped a half star.

I opted to listen this time and am glad I did. Eva Kaminsky normally is a voice I enjoy and that held true here. She does a great job with character distinctions, especially Sam and Freddie who she just nails. I may never go back to reading the series as I really enjoyed her performance and the story despite my issues with Sam. And, the bonus story at the end was an unexpected delight and so, so necessary. You’ll have to read/listen to it yourself to understand what I’m talking about.

I have read ebooks for the entire  Fatal series  until now. I LOVE this series and these characters. I am absorbed into many of the overall plots which carry through multiple books.  I love how Samantha is strong and smart; she cares for her team and for the victims of the crimes. The humor in her banter with her co-workers is fun. Nick is smart and caring. He has such compassion for others. Others like Scotty, Shelby, Skip, Celia, Samantha’s siblings, their families and her team, are all well developed and dear. Fatal Threat, as makes sense, starts with a threat to Nick’s family while he is out of country. Sam did not handle this situation well. I did not enjoy her […]

Art teacher Cora Kelly accepts a position at the New Horizons Boys Ranch for the sole purpose of getting to know the director, Aiyana Turner, who happens to be her biological mother. Cora hasn’t told her adopted family nor Aiyana of her discovery. She has her reasons but things start to get complicated when she and Elijah Turner, Aiyana’s adopted grown son, become “involved.”   It’s an interesting story as Cora tries to figure out who Aiyana is and why she gave her up when she later adopted so many others. Cora’s relationship with Elijah develops pretty naturally even though it creates some serious ethical issues for her. It was easy to judge her for keeping her secret so long but just as […]
