Thrifty Thursday: Audio The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle #JIAM

The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to read a book which was free (at some point). Tantor freebie on January 18, 2017  (currently $6.99 to $23.26 as of writing this post) Overall rating 4.29 with 181,280 ratings and 4,802 reviews   I get emails occasionally from Tantor with a free audio download. So since June is Audiobook Month, I decided it was a very appropriate Thrifty Thursday selection. This is a classic mystery tale, set in the late 1800s in England. Who doesn’t love a British accent? I am listening to many more of my books set in England for just this reason. Simon Prebble does a fine job with male and female voices differentiated. I could distinguish which character […]

I’d never heard of this Shadows of the Immortals series when it was on a list from Tantor of new releases.  It sounded interesting, in a favorite urban fantasy genre and it was the first in the series. I’ve become a huge audio fan and couldn’t resist giving it a try. Magic is also appealing to me. Wow! Stolen Magic was rather awesome! The world-building was fascinating and there were some great characters. The paranormal types were unique which is always refreshing. There were shapers, shifters, vampires, and gods.  Lexi, the main character, was so strong and compassionate; I couldn’t help but love her. She has the trait of making friends of many types, needed by every heroine to succeed. […]

Jennifer read and reviewed this book earlier. Here’s mine of the audio version and how it connects with the series.   FBI Special Agents Jessica Harlow and John Shepherd have an interesting history. They attended the academy together and competed against each other full out. Both graduated with not so great opinions of each other. Now, six years later they find themselves in the same Chicago office assigned to the same high profile undercover case in Jacksonville. They’re both professionals so of course they’re going to make it work…right:)   This isn’t one of those stories with lots of action and pivotal moments. It is, however, a wonderfully developed story about these two characters. We begin with John and then transition to Jessica’s point […]

I listened to this recommendation from an Ace Roc Star friend.  It’s one of her favorites. It’s also fantasy, which isn’t always the easiest for me to assimilate, so I got the audio from the library. The tale goes from childhood to manhood of Fitz, the bastard son of the prince, who many wish to control or kill. He has special skills and works to learn more in support of the King, his grandfather. The characters, the story are widely varying and memorable. It may be long but it kept me intensely engaged. I wanted to know more, know everything and I felt deeply. Fitz, even in his situation, and at a very young age,  has a moral integrity and […]

The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy E. Reichert

The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy E. Reichert

read it, track reviews are a way  to track books for my reading challenges and they will be super short.   The Coincidence of Coconut Cake is my first novel by Reichert and my first time listening to C.S.E Cooney. Both firsts was met with enjoyment. Coconut Cake is a story about a chef down on her luck both in her love life and with her business. While the novel is not marketed as a romance it has one in it between the chef, Lou and Al. Think of the movie You’ve Got Mail where the couple meets, becomes friends then lovers but before they can get their HEA they have to deal with who they really are to each other. Reichert services up sweet romance and […]

It’s been almost a year since John Devlin walked away from Amelia Gray to see to his ailing grandfather and then cutoff all communication. Amelia is nursing a broken heart and has accepted a restoration assignment in Ascension, South Carolina to get her out of Charleston for a few months. One day while working in the Seven Gates Cemetery, she is “called” into the adjacent forest and discovers a circled of twelve mortsafes and sees a pair of hands gripping the grates. It’s the body of a young woman and it’s recent. Detective Lucien Kendrick is assigned to the case and he and Amelia have an immediate connection…one she’s not sure is kindred, lust or something else.   I’d never heard of a mortsafe […]

I’m enjoying the audios in the Black Knights Inc series.  Abby Craden is an easy listen. I do feel as though the character’s voices are running together but this is because there are certain expressions, slang, the author uses for multiple characters. Now those who are together, the guys, it makes some sense.  But the women don’t all know each other before they “join” the group or even after, so it bugs me when they use it.. Eve is Becky’s best friend and was involved with her brother, Bill, when she was young. She certainly has not had things too easy in an emotional sense, but she is learning and has come into her own. She wants to see if she can start fresh with […]

Audio Review: Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty

Audio Review: Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty

This is the story of the Kettle sisters, Gemma, Lyn and Cat, 33-years old triplets (two are identical twins) and a look at their lives at a pivotal moment in time. It’s told in each of their voices, transitioning from past to present as they each face a critical issue. The dynamics of how they interact with each other is also an important aspect of their story.   I very much enjoyed this story as the character development was outstanding. I felt I truly knew each sister and how they would behave at every juncture. The transitions to the past were timely as they aptly provided context for the three women’s present characterizations. The twists in their stories, especially Gemma’s, were stunning, catching […]
