CIA Agent Patrick Killion is on a secret mission to hunt down the ruthless female assassin hired to kill the Vice President of the United States. The trail leads him to the Colombian rainforest and an earnest biologist, Audrey Lockhart, whose work on poison dart frogs gives her access to one of the deadliest substances on earth—the same substance used to murder the VP.

When Audrey is attacked by the local drug cartel, Killion steps in and hustles her out of harm’s way, determined to find out what she knows. His interrogation skills falter somewhere between saving her life and nursing her back to health as he realizes she’s innocent, and he ends up falling for her. Audrey has a hard time overlooking the fact that Killion kidnapped her, but if she wants to get her life back and track down the bad guys, she has to trust him. Then someone changes the rules of their cat and mouse game and now they’re the ones being hunted—by a cold-blooded killer who is much closer than they think.

Remember Vice President Burger’s murder? Where a female assassin was able to enter his residence dressed as his maid and poison him? Well, based on the poison that was used, CIA intelligence officer Patrick Killion has narrowed the suspect down to Audrey Lockhart, a scientist and frog biologist who has access to the type of poison used. He couldn’t be more wrong.

The journey Killion takes us and Audrey on is long and dangerous before he realizes he could be wrong. Theirs is an interesting relationship as he struggles against internal and external forces that compromise his ability to keep Audrey safe. She’s feisty and holds her own throughout the story. He’s a bit of a jerk for most of the story but has some serious skills!

Typical of the stories in this series, the action is dangerous and has some pretty ruthless adversaries. But, it’s what I like about them. This was my first time listening and I liked the narration. I enjoyed Audrey and Killion and it was satisfying to see her take him down. Their ending couldn’t be more fitting. Still loving this series.

A convicted murderer is days away from execution when a body is found in the NC Outer Banks that has his signature. FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Lincoln Frazer is dispatched to investigate as he doesn’t want anything delaying this creep’s date with death. He collides with Dr. Isabel (Izzy) Campbell who was one of the first on the scene and has a personal connection. While their attraction is immediate, it’s in both of their best interests to not go there.   This was an extremely creepy and disturbing story that kept me off balance until the end. Izzy’s secret wasn’t revealed in one big scene, but slowly unveiled throughout the story and woven masterfully with the pace of current events. Lincoln […]

Quick summary Scarlett Stone sees a chance to gather evidence to prove her father’s innocence and seizes the opportunity (he was convicted 14 years ago of being a spy for the Russians). Trouble is she stepped (clumsily) right into the middle of some serious political intrigue involving the Russian ambassador and the FBI. Special Agent Matt Lazlo had no idea the charming woman he flirted with at a Christmas party would turn out to be major trouble.   What I enjoyed I like that Scarlett’s nerdy smart and doesn’t get her allure. She and Matt had a strong attraction before everything became a hot mess and they had to start all over again, making for a more interesting romance. The Russians were pretty scary, […]

Quick summary Single mother and linguist Vivi Vincent walks into the Minnesota Mall with her 8-year old son, Michael, and within minutes finds herself in the middle of one of the worst terrorist attacks since 9/11. FBI Special Agent Jed Brennan, on leave and on his way to his Wisconsin hometown, stops by the mall for some Christmas shopping and finds himself unwittingly in the middle of the action. He joins forces with the resourceful Vivi to escape but not before her son manages to overhear vital information about the terrorist that ultimately puts him at risk.   What I loved about the story The action starts pretty quickly and the tension never eases up throughout the book. Vivi’s not only super protective […]

I love it when the action in a suspense novel starts on the first page. This book begins that way and never seems to let up! Quick summary FBI Special Agent Mallory Rooney joined the bureau because she ultimately wanted to find out what happened to her twin sister who was abducted 18 years ago. While tracking a serial killer she stumbles upon information suggesting that a vigilante is operating outside of law enforcement. Former CIA operative Alex Parker is now working for a covert organization whose mission is to take down the most vile criminals before they enter the justice system. As Mallory starts to get closer to discovery, Alex is assigned to “watch” her and ends up getting closer than he’d planned. The […]

What drives the story…the suspense or the romance? Hi there! I’m delighted to be part of The Book Nympho!’s Hot & Deadly romantic suspense month. My name is Toni Anderson and I write Romantic Suspense. It is also my favorite genre to read. The challenge is always to find a way to make the romance angle and the suspense aspect weave together in such a way that you can’t have one without the other. To me, a good RS book is not simply bookended by dead bodies and things that go *BANG*! The danger is intensified because of the romance between two specific people and the romance tends to be accelerated because of the deadly situations the hero and heroine find themselves in. In my […]
