Magic and mystery collide in this second installment of the new urban fantasy series by House of Comarre author Kristen Painter.

Still coming to terms with their unexpected partnership, Augustine and Harlow have a tentative truce. With Harlow slowly working to accept being fae, Augustine still learning how to be Guardian, and feelings growing on both sides though, they do not have an easy road ahead.

But when a young girl is stolen from the Mardi Gras Exemplar Ball -- the biggest far event of the year -- Harlow and Augustine must put all their issues aside to bring her home alive. Harlow's father, Braziano, is of course their number one suspect, but evil lurks in every corner of the city and time is running out. Their only choices: Either find a way to rescue the girl, or Augustine must die.

The World

Kristen Painter’s Crescent City series is set in NOLA in 2068. This world is full of all kinds of supernatural creatures. While book 1, HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN dealt with mostly Fae races we get the addition of witches and voodoo practitioners into the mix.

The Fae and witches don’t really like each other and the fae govern what the witches are allowed to do. The voodoo practitioners and witches don’t get along. There is tension among the three groups and ETERNAL CITY starts setting things up for that tension to reach a new level.

The Characters

It’s always a good sign when I’m talking to the characters in a book. “RED FLAG!!! RED FLAG!!! I have a bad feeling Harlow!” “How can you not know, Augustine, ugh men!”

The cast of HoRS returns with a few new characters.

Harlow is fae but has tried to rejected that side for most of her life. But she’s starting to see that she can no longer do that. Harlow is really starting to feel like part of the world that is her new home in NOLA. I think she will only continue to grow into a character I can cheer for.

Augustine is all fae and now the guardian of the city. Which means his job is to protect the Fae in NOLA and he has his hands full with that new job. Auggie is former play boy that only has eyes for Harlow but before they can have a relationship they have a few secrets to work through.

As one villain is over thrown in ETERNAL CITY, a couple of others are “born” and I think one of them will be someone that will keep our team of Harlow and Auggie very busy.

The Narration

Elijah Alexander’s narration grew on me by the end of HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN and I decide to listen to ETERNAL CITY. Some of the things I pick on him about in my review of HoRS has ironed themselves out. Elijah is a great narrator but I still giggle when he chooses to make the cajun speaking characters sound like Sebastian, the crab from The Little Mermaid. So letting go of my OCD about him using the wrong accents for some of the characters let me enjoy his performance more this time around. I will defintely be listening to book 3, GARDEN OF DREAMS AND DESIRES.

ETERNAL CITY is a great addition to the CC series and it’s going to change the landscape of Harlow and Augustine’s relationship. I can’t wait to see what happens next and how some of the issues get dealt with as the series continues.

About Kristen Painter

A little about me: I’m a former college English teacher, but I’ve held a crazy mix of other jobs including maitre’d for Wolfgang Puck, personal trainer, and sales for Christian Dior Bijoux. On the writing side of things, I’m a two-time Golden Heart finalist and have been on the board of three different RWA chapters. What can I say? I like getting involved. I’m not adverse to bossing people around either.

I have a *slight* shoe addiction and occasionally indulge in an unnecessary handbag. Hah! That was a joke. There is no such thing as an unnecessary handbag. I love make up and jewelry and spa days. Yes, I’m a girly girl. But don’t think that makes me weak. I can (and do) kill off characters with the best of them. Speaking of which…

My forays into writing have been as varied as the jobs I’ve held. I’ve written poetry, articles for magazines, short stories, paranormal romances (that include fantasy, contemporary and steampunk genres) and now I’ve found a home with urban fantasy. I love worldbuilding and few genres give you the kind of license urban fantasy does.

I’m also the co-founder of the award-winning writer’s site Romancedivas.com.

I live in FL with my retired Air Force husband and a horde of feline dependents. I’m represented by The Knight Agency.

Q&A with Kristen Painter About Her New Crescent City Series

Q&A with Kristen Painter About Her New Crescent City Series

Posted May 23, 2014 by Jennifer in Author Interview, Blog Tour | 7 Comments

Please welcome Kristen Painter back to The Book Nympho. Today she’s here to talk about her new Urban Fantasy series, Crescent City.     The Crescent City series is a “spin-off” of sorts for your House of Comarre series. Will readers need to be familiar with that series before reading House of the Rising Sun? Nope! Crescent City isn’t so much a spin off as an adjacent series.   With Crescent City series being set in NOLA did you pick the title for book one, House of the Rising Sun from the old song that’s about the real life NOLA? I did! It also plays into the plot of the book and the house where my characters live. It was a bit of inspiration, too.   […]

House of the Rising Sun by Kristen Painter

First Thought Kristen Painter continues to weave a complex world and characters. She is a master at world building and a great example of what Urban Fantasy is all about. What I liked I liked that Painter gave us more Fae with the House of the Rising Sun. Her other series is more about vampires so it’s nice to learn more about other supes. And what better city to have as a back-drop than NOLA? Augustine is a great character. He’s complex. Even though he is the hero and main character he has a dark side. He had a rough childhood with that momma of his. I like that our other main character, Harlow, is not likeable at first. She comes off as a little […]
