Sara Linton, medical examiner in the small town of Heartsdale, GA, is called out to an apparent suicide on the local college campus. The mutilated body offers few clues - and the college authorities are eager to avoid a scandal - but for Sara and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, things don't add up. As Jeffrey pursues the sadistic killer, he discovers that ex-police detective Lena Adams, now a security guard on campus, may be in possession of crucial information. But bruised and angered by her expulsion from the force, Lena seems barely capable of protecting herself, let alone saving the next victim…

Sarah Linton is called to the scene of an apparent suicide of a student and allows her very pregnant sister, Tessa, to accompany her. What happens next sets off a series of tragic and mysterious events that calls into question whether the dead student was a suicide.

Most of the story was akin to watching a train about to wreck while standing by powerless to do anything about it other than scream at the deaf pages. Lena Adams drove me crazy and Jeffrey Tolliver doesn’t help matters. The mystery was a good one, though, as I wasn’t certain of the killer’s identity because I could figure out motive.

This is an extraordinary series with deeply flawed and troubled characters. No one comes out unscathed and sometimes it’s difficult to define the good guys.

This is an older series that should be read before starting the author’s Will Trent series The story begins at a skating rink where a young girl pulls a gun on another teen and a standoff involving the police ensues. It sets off a chain of events that goes into a direction I didn’t expect. It’s an awful, uncomfortable story that Slaughter tells masterfully. My emotions were all over the place, especially where Lena is concerned. By the end, I couldn’t believe my feelings of sympathy for her, an amazing feat. Her soliloquy near the end was extraordinary. There were a number of themes resonating strongly, most loudly was the fragility of children’s faith in the adults entrusted with their care. The narration by Clarinda […]

Sarah Linton is a pediatrician and the coroner for the town of Heartsdale in Grant County, Georgia. If that wasn’t a weird enough combination, her ex-husband, Jeffrey Tolliver, is the town’s police chief. I knew from the start this was going to be a different kind of story.  The crime Sarah goes to the local diner for lunch with her sister. She’s a little late and the lunch crowd is pretty much gone. When she goes to the restroom, she finds Sibyl Adams, a professor at the local college who is also blind, covered in blood in one of the stalls. She’s been brutally stabbed and assaulted and Sarah tries but can’t save her. During the autopsy, she discovers just how demented her killer really […]
