A career of state-sanctioned murder has taken its toll. Milton is troubled by nightmares, a long line of ghosts who torment his dreams. He resolves to make his next job his last and, then, perhaps, he can start to make amends for everything that he has done.

Sharon Warriner is a single mother in the East End of London, suicidal with fear that she's lost her young son to a life in the gangs. After Milton saves her life, he promises to help. But the gang, and the charismatic rapper who leads it, is not about to cooperate with him.

As London burns through summer riots, Milton finds himself in unfamiliar territory, dealing with an unfamiliar foe. And when his employer sends another agent after him, the odds against him are stacked even higher.

Read It, Track It is a way  to track books for my reading challenges and they will be super short.

Having read the prequel novellas,  I looked forward to finally reading a full length novel and learning more about the character John Milton. It didn’t work out exactly. John decides to leave the government and try to make things better in the world. He wants to atone for his work. We learn more about the people he wants to help than about him.

I hoped this would be like The Equalizer (there was this old tv show), where a guy with skills goes out and helps people. I guess Person of Interest did this somewhat. Or it could be clever like the Jack Reacher books. The Cleaner was just dark, violent and depressing.

The story was about people struggling in a bad neighborhood. Bad things happen. Violence happens. More bad things happen. People get hurt. Everything is bad. The end.

So I didn’t learn anything much about anyone. Nothing really changed in the neighborhood. Bad things happened and it was depressing. Then it just ended with no reason or purpose to anything. There are 9 books in this seriesbut I don’t think I can read anymore.

The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to read a book which was free (at some point). Kindle freebie on November 23, 2016  (currently FREE as of writing this post) This is a special edition of Thrifty Thursday which is akin to Jennifer’s Read It, Track It where I am reading more “free” books for the COYER Winter Storm Challenge   1000 Yards is a prequel novella in the John Milton series. It is a detailed, political operation by a coldly rational assassin.  Milton is obviously skilled and intelligent. Although, he seems to be having health issues; it is not developed. It is frightening in its suspense and the unemotional progression of events. Similar to 1000 Yards, Tartantula is another mission from […]
