ARCReview Well-Written kickass

Jax is a believable and likable character. Bonilla makes reference to Buffy Summers and Jax is a lot like Buffy but she’s not the only one of her kind. She’s a Waerd (Hunter) and with that job she has to be tough on the outside but she has a soft inside. She’s never really gotten over the death of her last partner, a Bearer. Bearers help Waerd’s with their emotional baggage from their hunting job. They bear the hunter’s emotions like grief and guilt so they can do their job. But like a lot of partnerships sometimes a romance can build.

And we all know that office romances can be a sticky situations. That’s where we find Jax; trying to get over her ex-boyfriend Finn. Jax and Finn have been partners for five years and their romance started almost the same time their working relationship did. The two are trying to learn to keep the personal away from their jobs but it’s not working. Finn won’t take no for an answer.

Then enters a Micha. A guy just passing through town. He meets Jax, the girl who was in his latest dream. Meeting Jax has turned Micha’s world upside down. He now knows that there are things that go bump in the night and he’s part of that world as a Bearer.

So are you with me? We have a girl who hunts evil much like Buffy where she has to hide what she is by day working in a coffee-house (unlike Buffy) and she is surrounded by two hot guys that want to work with her and have the hots for her. Lucky girl.

BUT there’s the whole evil to fight and in this case it’s Furies. I really liked the mythology that Amanda Bonilla builds with the Furies, Waerd’s and Bearers. She also does a great job weaving the mystery about who in town is being used by the Furies. There was three possible suspects and about 80% of the time I was sure I knew who it was then Bonilla would muddy the waters with the other two making me second guess my theory.

I found Vengeance Borne to be a very entertaining read and a great start to the new Urban Fantasy series by Amanda Bonilla and I can’t wait to see what happens next with Jax.
