Waking up next to a dead stranger with no memory of how he got there should be the worst day of Caitlin Cavanaugh’s life. However, what seems to be a clear case of self-defense soon puts Caitlin on the defensive, as evidence left behind at the scene doesn’t match up with her story. But proving her innocence becomes the least of her problems...

Criminal defense attorney Jack Wellington is highly sought after in the courtrooms of Savannah… not to mention the bedrooms of its female denizens. Jack believes himself to be hardened against the darker aspects of human nature, as well as the emotional plight of those he both cross-examines and defends. But when he encounters Caitlin in the hospital following her morning ordeal, something about the frightened but defiant romance novelist pulls at him.

Jack’s attraction to his client continues to grow as what started as a simple enough case turns into a fight to save Caitlin’s life. Old friends, ex-lovers and even her own family – someone among them wants Caitlin dead. And both of them learn what lengths some will go to in order to avoid justice.

Romantic suspense writer Caitlin Cavanaugh wakes up with one heck of a hangover, especially when she finds a dead man in her bedroom and no memory of the night before. She’s the primary suspect and her brother asks his friend Jack Wellington, Savannah’s top criminal defense attorney, to help her out of this mess.

Obviously, this story captured my attention immediately. The clues and red herrings develop slowly, which gave me time to go down some dead end paths before I settled on the right one. Caitlin’s no shrinking violet and Jack’s definitely not your shy, retiring type so they add even more tension.

O’Neill is my auto-buy author and I love this series. This was a compelling story with lots of twists and surprises. Even though I’d figured out the mystery before the reveal, there was still one more element that I hadn’t foreseen. I’m jumping right into the next book.

About Lisa Clark O’Neill

One fine day in the not-too-distant past, Lisa Clark O’Neill left Wittenberg University with a BA in English, which she promptly neglected. After working as an interior designer, decorative artist, and Montessori art teacher (there may have been a BA in art as well,) she finally settled into the role of mother to two very fine children. However, two years of doing the stay-at-home-mom brain cell melt drove her to pull out a pen and one of her old college notebooks. That turned into six manuscripts.

Lisa spent subsequent years avoiding housework by burying her nose in just about every romance novel she could get her hands on, after completely falling in love with the genre. Her own work falls into the romantic suspense sub-genre, with strong comedic undertones.

Lisa currently lives in the Atlanta area with her family, her dog, her cat and her daughter’s pet rabbit. When she isn’t attempting to keep the rabbit from eating the woodwork, she’s hard at work on her next novel.(less)

Defense attorney Ainsley Tidwell wraps up her latest case only to learn that her beloved cousin, Sabrina Paulson, is missing from her hometown of Dahlonega, Georgia. When Ainsley makes her way home, her detour to the site of Sabrina’s older sister, Carly’s unsolved murder has her confront the prickly new owner of her Grandmother’s house, Callum (Cal) Elias.   For reference, Ainsley works for Jack Wellington in Savannah. She was the one that discovered her cousin Carly’s body when she was 12-years old. Despite that trauma, Ainsley’s a smart, self confident woman completely up for the snappy repartee with Cal. Speaking of that, the witty and funny dialogue is the author’s signature and was in fine form in this story.   The mystery […]

FBI Agent Jesse Wellington was on an undercover assignment that went horribly wrong when the subject they had under surveillance turned up brutally murdered. Complicating matters is Jillian Montgomery, a potential suspect who is connected to his partner and seems to have a startling physical connection to him.   I love this series and was happy to get Jesse and Jillian’s story! Everything about it was creepy and sinister, keeping me on edge and unable to stop reading until I finished. Anytime Russian mobsters are involved you know it’s going to be suspenseful. Jesse, however, almost stepped into anti-hero status but was able to stay inside the lines in the end. I really liked Jillian who was willing to face her fears in […]

Quick summary Sadie Rose Mayhew got a pair of ortho-soled shoes from her fiancé for Christmas and it was the proverbial last straw. She calls off the wedding and returns to Charleston, her hometown, and lands right in the path of her childhood nemesis, Declan Murphy.   A bit of background Sadie was raised by her grandmother who lived next door to the Murphys. Declan terrorized her as a child (think snakes, frogs, those kind of things). The adult version is a rather surly and difficult man who seems thrown by her return.   What I loved about this story I wasn’t excited to read Declan’s story…until I started it. First, it begins with a chilling prologue, setting the tone for the suspense aspect. It’s […]

Quick summary Charleston police detective and forensic artist Josh Harding is recuperating from his injuries incurred during the last case. While attending his friend’s bachelor’s party, he recognizes the hired stripper who he fell in love with eight years ago. Samantha (Sam) Martin can’t believe her first assignment as a stripper lands her in front of the only man she’s ever loved.   A bit of background Sam’s brother, Donnie, lies in a coma after having been shot and hit by a bus several months ago. She’s sat vigil by his side, believing that he’s in there and will recover, despite his doctors prognosis to the otherwise. Josh and Sam knew each other when he was an art student in Savannah and she […]

Quick summary FBI profiler Clay Copeland was ordered to take a week of vacation following the tragic ending to his last case. The serial dater decides to spend the time outside of Charleston at his best friend’s beachfront home. When he spots Tate Hennessy sunning on the beach, he makes the move of a lifetime.   The romance Clay is one of the most appealing fictional characters I’ve read. He’s bright, handsome, good at what he does and has a wicked wit and sense of humor. He isn’t perfect but his honesty and directness more than over compensated for his flaws. Tate was a perfect match as she “got” this man and had a strong sense of self. She’s a single mother raising a 5-year […]

When I started this book I was curious as to how the story would explain the title. It soon became clear how aptly it was named as the two main characters’ meeting was certainly serendipitous. Ava Martinez and Jordan Wellington were destined to connect in spite of their circumstances and the dramatic differences in their backgrounds.   She’s a veterinarian and he’s an assistant district attorney. She’s from a fragmented, “colorful” family and he’s from a close-knit, successful one. Ava’s pretty tough and isn’t afraid of the goons working for her uncle (she should be) and Jordan’s got a strong sense of justice, even if it puts him in the crosshairs of some dangerous people.   There’s lots of action and sexual tension as […]
