Georgia Bureau of Investigations Agent Faith Mitchell arrives at her mother's house and finds the front door open and blood on the doorknob. Inside she finds a dead body and a hostage situation unfolding in the other room. However, her mother is nowhere in sight. When the scene turns even deadlier, Faith becomes a suspect and relies on her partner Will Trent and doctor Sara Linton to make sense of what happened at her mother's home.

The story starts with a bang when GBI Agent Faith Mitchell returns to her mother, Evelyn’s home to pick up her infant daughter, Emily, and finds a chilling situation. When the dust settles, the house is a major crime scene and Evelyn is missing. It’s now a race against time to figure out the who, why and where.

I couldn’t stop listening to this story, told from many characters’ points of view. It was often difficult to keep up with all of the minor gangsters but it didn’t matter…you knew they were dangerous. One of the highlights was finally getting the truth of Evelyn’s role in her former narcotics team’s dirty activities. Another was Will and Sara’s developing relationship, including his wife Angie. It was as complicated as I’d imagined.

The writing, characterizations and storytelling are the finest. It’s really hard resisting the need to jump right into the next book so I won’t. This was just excellent. And, as usual, the narration, this time by Shannon Cochran, was pitch perfect.

This series is so addictive I jumped right into the next book!

While in an airport restroom in Atlanta, Will Trent, an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, overhears a girl pleading to go home and knows something is wrong. But he waits too long to act, and now the girl and the angry man she's with have disappeared into the crowds at the busiest passenger airport in the world. After a desperate search, Will calls his supervisor, Amanda Wagner. Will's partner, Faith, immediately sends out an abducted child alert. The entire airport soon grinds to a halt all because Will has a hunch he is certain is true: a young girl has been snatched. And he intends to bring her back.

GBI Special Agent Will Trent did something to annoy his boss so he’s relegated to monitoring the toilets at the Atlanta airport to trap potential sexual predators. What he inadvertently stumbles upon is a possible child abduction.

It may be short but it is riveting. Will races against time to find the little girl whose face he can never forget as he beats himself up for ignoring his first instincts. I enjoyed following him and the team of agents working the situation. There’s no fluff or filler and this story moves.

Narrated by Kathleen Early, this was another fine performance and well crafted story in the series. Haven’t read a “miss” yet.

Quick summary Abigail Campano comes home and interrupts what appears to be an intruder who’s apparently murdered her daughter. What transpires next is shocking and extraordinary. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) and Agent Will Trent are ultimately called in when the case extends beyond the reach of the Atlanta Police Department (APD). He’s paired with APD Detective Faith Miller to coordinate the efforts of the two law enforcement groups and for the additional help.   What I loved about the story Faith makes her debut in the story and I loved how her working relationship with Will evolved from nowhere to respect and grudging admiration. They made a great team, especially given Will’s secret dyslexia. I’m looking forward to seeing more of […]

I read this before starting the Grant County series and stopped to complete that one because they’re connected by characters introduced in the third book of this series. I’ve now finished Grant County and am resuming this one.   This story is disturbing on so many levels. Aside from the horrific crime, issues regarding the judicial system, law enforcement, pedophilia, children being tried as a adults and incarcerated with violent criminals and parental attitudes towards these children are all addressed rather skillfully.   I found myself challenging some of my beliefs and reinforcing others. A well-written book should make you uncomfortable and this one had me unsettled from start to finish. I’m still thinking about some of the outcomes.
