Irony 101—The Spider herself snared in someone else’s web…

Another week, another few clues trickling in about the Circle, the mysterious group that supposedly runs the city’s underworld. Gathering intel on my hidden enemies is a painstaking process, but a more immediate mystery has popped up on my radar: a missing girl.

My search for the girl begins on the mean streets of Ashland, but with all the killers and crooks in this city, I’m not holding out much hope that she’s still alive.

A series of clues leads me down an increasingly dark, dangerous path, and I realize that the missing girl is really just the first thread in this web of evil. As an assassin, I’m used to facing down the worst of the worst, but nothing prepares me for this new, terrifying enemy—one who strikes from the shadows and is determined to make me the next victim.

I’m a big fan of Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series for many reasons.

  • Strong likable heroine
    • Really, what’s not to like about a heroine who kills the bad guys and is a great cook. Plus Gin is very loyal to her family and friends.
  • Scene stealing secondary characters
    • Gin is not the only character who is likable. Her gang of crime fighting friends and family brings more than just support to her life and the stories.
  • Great villains
    • Estep keeps cranking out fantastic bad guys.

Snared the sixteenth book in the series as all of the above. I don’t know who Estep has kept me coming back each time. I guess because I know I’m going to have a good time reading/listening to Gin’s adventures.

But as some of my buddies have pointed out in the past there are some repetitive issues. For the most part, they don’t bother me and I’ve come to see them as part of the series. The one that I could live without though is the one that caused me not to enjoy Snared as much as the previous books. Gin’s dreams.

Granted Gin had a traumatic childhood seeing her mother and sister killed so it’s only natural she would suppress some memories, but every (or at least most) installments Gin can’t remember why or how she knows someone “new” she meets only to later in the book have a dream that gives her the answers. I would think after having these dreams so often many of her memories would be triggered and remembered. At least we didn’t have the other plot device that has been used so many times where Fletcher left her a secret file on the current bad guy.

I think the element I liked the most about Snared was the addition of a serial killer as the villain. I cannot believe we’ve not had one before. I mean there as been some nasty villains in Gin’s past so it was nice to see a different type of murder. I also liked the information about Tucker. Now that we have taken a little side step from the Circle story arc I hope the next novel will bring us back and possibly wrap up it.

No Time to Breathe in Last Chance by Christy Reece

No Time to Breathe in Last Chance by Christy Reece

I couldn’t wait to start this book because I found McKenna to be fascinating in No Chance. It definitely didn’t disappoint. Quick summary It was speculated that McKenna had a seriously troubling backstory and seemed to be on the run. Everyone’s instincts were correct but they couldn’t have imagined how tragic her story really is. When she rescued Lucas Kane after having been kidnapped by Victor Lymes, he was determined to find this woman who he never could get out of his head. He makes it his mission to track her down to thank her and, maybe, just maybe, clear his mind of the woman who they called Ghost.   What I loved about this story Everything. It begins with the reveal of just […]

Oh My, a Hot Bear Shifter! Bodyguard by Jennifer Ashely

Oh My, a Hot Bear Shifter! Bodyguard by Jennifer Ashely

I love bear shifters and Ronan is on the list. After meeting him in Primal Bonds (book 2 in the Shifters Unbound series) I couldn’t wait for him to get his own HEA. And I think he story was better suited for a novella than a full length novel. There was no long drawn out plot or over sexed romance. Ronan is the Austin’s Shiftertown muscle. It’s easy with him being a huge Kodiak bear. But don’t let his size fool you, he has a soft heart. He pretty much runs a foster home for stray bear shifters. Picture a sexy papa bear that has a love for honey. And after saving Elizabeth during an attempted robbery of her store he now has a thing for […]

Review: All He Ever Needed by Shannon Stacey

Shannon Stacey continues to do an excellent job with Kowalski Family! She continues to bring fun and smart characters within touching and sexy romances.  We first saw Mitch Kowalski in the last book, Yours to Keep and I couldn’t wait to see how the Kowalskis in Maine were going to stake up to the Kowalskis in Connecticut. I love a story where the guy is a man whore that finally falls in love. Mitch Kowalski is the man whore of his hometown, Whitford, Maine. Every since high school Mitch has sown his wild oats with the gals in town. He can’t walk into any public place where he doesn’t hear old stories about his wild times keep the ladies happy. “Honey, if you got an innie and not an outtie between […]

First I have to give a shout out to Jen over at Red Hot Books for bullying me into reading Cut & Run. THANK YOU!!! I went into reading Cut & Run with the attitude, sweet hot M/M sex and nothing else in mind….. This is not a fluff book with hot sweaty men going at it. Well there is hot sex but that’s not the main focus. Cut & Run has a real back bone. The M/M romance aspect of the book was really just the cherry on top of a great read. I was so caught up in the serial killer case and what was going to happen next. I really had to use my brain to work the case with Ty and Zane. […]

REVIEW: Captured by the Highlander by Julianne MacLean

Posted July 13, 2011 by Jennifer in Book Review | 2 Comments

Captured by the Highlander is my first highlander book and I must say I really like the thought of a hot warrior in a kilt. And Duncan aka “The Butcher” is extremely hot; with his long black hair, rippling muscles and strong, experienced hands. Mmmm…. Duncan can pillage me anytime. He takes what he wants and will not be stopped. But like most great alphas his tender side comes out when he finds that special lass. Which he finds, while breaking into Fort William. But he doesn’t have lusty thoughts on his mind, nay, he looking for his enemy, Colonel Richard Bennett. But to Duncan’s surprise he finds the lovely Lady Amelia instead. The Butcher plans to use Amelia as bait for Colonel Bennett so […]
