The clock is ticking as Emberly—a phoenix capable of taking human form—races to take revenge against the sadistic and mysterious Rinaldo. The elusive rebel leader threatens to keep killing until he is given all of the research about a plaguelike virus derived from vampire blood.

Forced to reach out to the Paranormal Investigations Team for help, Emberly and her partner, Jackson, must decide who to trust as they follow the trail of dead bodies. When classified information is leaked and their safe house is ambushed, Emberly’s suspicions are confirmed—someone at PIT has betrayed them.

A final battle looms and Emberly will need to command all her powers—or watch the world turn to ash...

The Souls of Fire series has lots of action, limited sex and not very much in the way of romance.  Even reading them in order, I am having trouble keeping all the details after a year passes between books. I went back to read my reviews and once I started reading I didn’t feel lost.

In Ashes Reborn,  Rory is reborn after dying at the end of the Flameout. So he is on the sidelines.  Emberly and Jackson continue to work together, supporting each other, but they are on a tightrope between PIT and Rinaldo. It was a constant struggle without much ability to progress intelligently with others jerking their chains. There were plenty of fights but not a huge amount of new information to solve the overall mystery of the disease.

With all the rushing around, battles and injuries, they barely had time to sleep or eat. Or have sex. It also limited the amount of character or relationships development. It was a quick read with all the non-stop events. The depth of feelings wasn’t there for me. There didn’t seem to be time for the connection of the characters. When Sam did try to talk to Emberly, she brushed him off several times.

While Ashes Reborn is my least favorite, the series is consistently a great read. This transition in the plot leaves much unsolved, so I will definitely be looking forward to the next one. I tweeted the author and she was kind enough to respond. The fifth book will be self published, but as she has 4 books already releasing in 2018, it is likely to be in 2019.

The books in order:

Fireborn                 4 stars

Wicked Embers      4 stars

Flameout                4.5 stars

The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to read a book which was free (at some point). Kindle freebie on March 21 , 2016  (currently free as of writing this post) Overall rating 3.85 with 3,265 ratings and 804 reviews   I started reading Erin Nicholas with her new geek romance series, Opposites Attract, and loved it.  Since I wanted to read more of her works, I signed up for her review team. They sent me a book, After You, which is in the world of the Sapphire Falls series.   Since the first in the series was available as a Kindle freebie (and I already had it), I decided to read Getting Out of Hand to introduce me to the […]

This had all the things needed for a great small town romance. There was a group of women, old friends who had grown up together, all back in town for Emma’s wedding. The two women who don’t live there have family to visit and enjoy in the small town. They have a group of guys who are the best man and groomsmen to do activities with them. The small town has charming restaurants, businesses, and favorite hangouts. There are quirky characters needed in every small town. However, the wedding activities are two weeks worth of planned events. Who can take off two whole weeks? Mac comes from Chicago to Maine and stays with her fun aunts in the […]

The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to read a book which was free (at some point). Kindle freebie on December 20, 2013  (currently FREE as of writing this post) Overall rating 4.10 with 7,258 ratings and 397 reviews   I’m a fan of the Midnight Breed Series. I listened to books 1-10 on audio last year since the author would be at NOLA Storycon. I meant to just listen to one and then move on to another author but I got sucked into the overall story arc and just kept going. This novella was a freebie I got four years ago and it’s odd I didn’t read it first to be in order. It did, however, come out after the first 10 books […]

The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to read a book which was free (at some point). Kindle freebie on July 4, 2013  (currently FREE as of writing this post) Overall rating 3.83 with 3,160 ratings and 397 reviews   This was a quick and easy romance read.  This is told from a male perspective which was different. Perhaps because of this it was less emotional overall. It tries – TRIES – to be funny and sometimes is. But there are also times I felt the trying. John is the hot lumberjack, island man in flannel, born and raised in this small community. He’s still single and enjoying women but recently he has been with his high school crush, Kelly. Despite some […]

Shadows and Gold by Elizabeth Hunter

Shadows and Gold by Elizabeth Hunter

Read It, Track It is a way  to track books for my reading challenges and they will be super short.   I purchased this when it was a deal, a couple of years ago. But I had not read all of the previous Elemental Mysteries series,  which introduces the main characters here and the ancillary characters, or the following Elemental World series which continues and expands the story. I caught up this fall to read the latest in the world, A Stone-Kissed Sea. Shadows and Gold is called a prequel novella but it is a little longer than a novella and longer than the second “book”  Imitation and Alchemy which follows. It is more akin to the mystery series which follows one couple in […]

Thrifty Thursday: John Milton prequel novellas by Mark Dawson

The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to read a book which was free (at some point). Kindle freebie on November 23, 2016  (currently FREE as of writing this post) This is a special edition of Thrifty Thursday which is akin to Jennifer’s Read It, Track It where I am reading more “free” books for the COYER Winter Storm Challenge   1000 Yards is a prequel novella in the John Milton series. It is a detailed, political operation by a coldly rational assassin.  Milton is obviously skilled and intelligent. Although, he seems to be having health issues; it is not developed. It is frightening in its suspense and the unemotional progression of events. Similar to 1000 Yards, Tartantula is another mission from […]

Thrifty Thursday: Under a Desert Sky by Loren Lockner

The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to read a book which was free (at some point). Kindle freebie on October 4, 2014  (currently $3.39 as of writing this post) Overall rating 4.50 with 18 ratings and 11 reviews This is a more brave pick than I thought with so few ratings and reviews. I actually liked Under a Desert Sky with both romance and mystery. The descriptions of the area and development of the characters was well done. There were quite a number of characters, too! This is a murder being investigated by the police and it happened at a resort. So the cast is large with police department staff and resort managers and staff. Both the mystery and romance are fairly good. The […]
