Joint Review: The Trouble with Mistletoe by Jill Shalvis

Joint Review: The Trouble with Mistletoe by Jill Shalvis

Jennifer’s Thoughts Jill Shalvis is one of my go-to authors for contemporary romance and she hit another home run in her new Heartbreaker Bay series with The Trouble With Mistletoe. As I said in my review of Sweet Little Lies, the first book in the series, I typically like the couples that follow the first in a series. Willa and Keane’s story clicked with me better than Pru and Finn’s. Willa and Keane’s story is almost a second chance kind of romance. Willa had a crush on Keane in high school but he doesn’t remember her when he steps into her pet shop early one morning looking for kitty care for the devil spawn of a cat, Petunia. (Cat lovers will love Petunia […]

The Masked City by Genevieve Cogman

The Masked City by Genevieve Cogman

The Invisible Library sounded exciting. I mean who doesn’t like libraries and books and adventures with spies? And I liked it.  But The Masked City was better – a fast paced, thrilling ride from start to finish.  The two seem very different in some ways.  The first had the initial world-building, a large cast of developing characters,  and lots of book stuff, in addition to the mystery and action adventure.  The latter was full-on action adventure which barely stopped to take a breath. Our knowledge, as well as Irene’s knowledge, of the world continues to expand as she travels to a new dimension which is far on the chaos spectrum.  The Fae are the chaos; the dragons are the order.  War is being […]

New series: Ninth City Burning by J. Patrick Black

New series: Ninth City Burning by J. Patrick Black

Each chapter is from the point of view of a character. There are many, many shortish chapters. There are also a large number of different characters, all separate, then brought together through events to importance with each other and the story. The author introduces us to the characters in a brilliant method. Beginning with Rae and Naomi, girls who are part of what feels somewhat like an native American Indian tribe. Their group of families travels and lives in a historical fashion without much technology, fighting with other groups sometimes. This straightforward life, with its strong, hardworking people, is where we start. Next we meet more young people in a settlement. This is a very organized place where most are factory workers […]

Thunder Road by Sierra Dean

Thunder Road by Sierra Dean

A new Urban Fantasy series by Sierra Dean? Sign me up! Thunder Road is the first book in Sierra Dean’s Rain Chaser series it all the right spots for this Urban fantasy fan. Featuring a kick-ass heroine (does Dean know how to write any other kind of heroine? NO), Tallulah who is a rain chaser. (WTF is a rain chaser?) Ok so, the series revolves around Greek Mythology and rain chasers worship the god Seth or you might know him by some of his other names; Tlaloc or Thor (yes, Thor). Seth is the god that controls rain, lightning, and thunder. Tallulah was born with the mark of Seth on her neck, a cloud, so she was raised and trained in one of his temples to be […]

Dual Audio Review: Discovering You by Brenda Novak

Dual Audio Review: Discovering You by Brenda Novak

Anne’s Review I have been reading the Whiskey Creek series all along and I love it. It started with a tight-knit group of friends from the small town in California. Each book is a contemporary romance with one of the friends. I really like these people. The friends have mostly settled and now the brothers of the first couple are falling in love. Rod Amos is quite a guy considering his rough and tough upbringing. Discovering You seems more like romantic suspense than contemporary romance. Rod’s new neighbor is in trouble and he wants to help her. I love how he takes care of people, like India and Van, when he had no parents to care for him, just his brother, Dylan. It […]

The Player by Kresley Cole

The Player by Kresley Cole

Kresley Cole manages to take lust-at-first-sight and turn it into love with her couples in The Game Maker series. Much like the other two Sevastyan brothers, Dmitri knows he has met his soul mate in Victoria when he sees her for the first time. If you can suspend your disbelief that people can fall so hard for each other within a few days you can fully enjoy The Player. If you can’t then this series may not be for you, but I ask if you can’t suspend your disbelief why are you reading fiction anyway?! Sure with romances like this the guy can come off as a creeper when he is obsessed so fast with the woman and Dmitri straddled that line but then there were also moments where […]

If it wasn’t for life getting it the way I would have finished Cream of the Crop in one sitting. I love getting my hands on an Alice Clayton book because I know I’m going to laugh my ass off reading it.     We’ve seen Yardley Summers in every story to date, known as the owner of the most outstanding K-9 training facility in the country, Harmonie Kennels. When the man she’s been dating for over a year suddenly disappears, Yardley’s brother, Law Batisse, asks Kye McGarren to go check things out. Law and Kye served together in Afghanistan and Kye and Yardley have quite a history.   One of the things I wanted from this series is to learn more about the K-9 service and it has delivered magnificently! So, I’ll talk about the two K-9 stars first.   Kye’s K-9 service dog is Lily, a toller (a breed I’d never heard of before this story). She’s used purely for detection and rescue; she wouldn’t hurt […]
